MY

Bookings taken now for October 2012 edition 2012. Deadline is Monday 24th September 2012

Hi all,

It’s September which in our Household means a lot of change this year.

Our eldest Son has got the grades he needs to go to University in Aberystwyth which judging by the grin on the face has come at just the right time - it’s a very strange grin.

It’s a time for my Wife Julia and I to say our tearful goodbyes to him ... not before he fi lls out a questionaire to help give us an idea if we did ok as Parents. Julia will be in fl oods of tears and I will be the supportive Husband probably apologizing for all the comments I have made to Sam about our foodbill being reduced by 80% in the absence of his 3am cupboard raids.

James (our middle Son) is gearing up for two years intense study towards his GSCE’s and seems really disappointed that Snooker is not one of the exam’s available. There is not much our potting machine does not know about the game!

My Daughter left the protective bosom of Primary School in July and will be joining the intake at St.Cenydd. She looks really smart in her new uniform and I am comforting myself that it probably the last year that her hemline is somewhere near her knees, not up near her backside as seems to be the case with the older kids at School....bless her!

I hope you enjoy the mag this month :-)

With sponsorship received from the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund the enthusiastic team of young gardeners were able to clear the unwanted weeds from the garden area.

They also imported some really good soil and recycled green waste compost (many thanks to Bryn Quarry for their kind donation of lovely soil), cover their new soil with a weed-block membrane, and then plant insect friendly shrubs such as ‘The Butterfl y bush’ and Asters and then fi nally they covered the border with bark mulch to keep the weeds at bay.

“I was amazed by the enthusiasm of those young gardeners – some of them reminded me of myself when I was their age … only they seemed more intelligent! And certainly understand the idea of helping our environment and wildlife. This bodes well for the future” said Roger.

Hendre School after school club teamed up with My Local View garden writer Roger Crookes to create a wildlife friendly garden earlier this spring and summer.

As well as planting wildlife and pollinator-friendly plants, the intrepid have constructed a bug hotel using old pallets and twigs to provide habitat for insects, and a bird table nearby which should encourage the whole food chain to thrive.

My name is James and on September the 12th I will set off from John O’Groats and make my way to Lands End. The distance between the two is nearly 1,000 miles.

The challenge is to blag not only my way from start to fi nish, but also my food, travel, accommodation and anything and everything else I will need. None of my trip has been pre-planned or arranged in advance.

I will be collecting items to auction off along the way. I hope to achieve this in about 10 days and to date I have raised over £1500 as well as numerous items for the auction. All monies raised will go directly to Cancer Research Wales.

I’m doing this in memory of my amazing mum Ann, 61, who sadly passed away from Bowl Cancer in November after being diagnosed only two months earlier.

If you would like to fi nd out more about my adventure, follow my trip live as it happens or even sponsor me please visit my website www.charityblag.co.uk

Join the Big Conversation! There are many issues facing our lives today which we struggle to deal with. They can range from something that seems simple, like how we make and keep friends, to how we can live a meaningful life, or care for the planet. These, and other subjects, are the conversations of today, and you can join in!

The Big Conversation starts on Sunday 16th September at 5:30 at the Malcolm Uphill (Wetherspoon’s) in Caerphilly, and runs at the same time every week for six weeks. If you like sitting in a congenial atmosphere, chatting with old friends and new friends, and you are willing to share opinions and learn from others, then this is for you. The first session is about making and keeping friends. There is no charge, and if you buy a coffee or tea you will be offered a free refill!

Bookings taken now for October 2012 edition 2012. Deadline is Monday 24th September 2012

3 tbsp sunfl ower oil

650g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks

1 onion, peeled and chopped

1 large aubergine, cut into cubes

2 tbsp Rogan Josh curry paste

400g sieved tomatoes

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Fresh coriander leaves, to garnish

Chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onion, to serve

You’ll need...

To Make...• Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a large deep frying

pan. Add the lamb chunks and fry over a high heat until browned all over. Remove the lamb from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside.

• Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion and aubergine for 7-8 minutes, stirring all the time until golden. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute then pour in the sieved tomatoes and bring to the boil.

• Return to the lamb to the pan and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cover and cook gently for 25-30 minutes until the lamb is tender. Stir occasionally and add a splash of water if needed.

• Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the curry in warmed bowls garnished with coriander and with chapattis, sliced tomatoes, cucumber and onions.

Lamb & Aubergine Curry

You’ll fi nd jars of curry pastes in most supermarkets and they certainly take all the hassle out of making an authentic tasting curry at home. Rogan josh is a medium-hot paste but for a really mild fl avour use a korma paste or go for a vindaloo paste if you prefer a curry with a little more heat.

So that was summer, blink and you missed it, and it seems that autumn has now arrived (Personally I think autumn arrived back in June) (and then again in July etc etc!), anyway ready or not, it is here now, which means it is time for one of my favourite groups of plants – Its Bulb time!

I suspect that I may enthused about the wonderful array Daff odils, snowdrops and tulips available in previous editions, so this month I wanted to tell you about a far less common bulb known as ‘Queen Fabiola’ (The bulb pack may also show tongue twister names such as Tritelia or Brodiaea).

Now this queen is a right little royal beauty – but is amazingly cheap, you can probably buy 10 or more bulbs for less than £1.00, (so that’s um … about 10 pence per bulb, and people say that gardening is expensive!) She is very easy to grow and yet not commonly seen!

She will multiply over a few years to form a neat dense clump – but doesn’t really take over.

She produces rich royal blue fl owers in June / July which look great contrasted against lighter colours like our yellow heather in the photo.

I could go on – and often do – Queen Fabiola is only a small bulb so you could put 10 of them easily in a pot to come back year after year (they are quite winter hardy – so no worries there) and they only reach about 1 foot high when in fl ower.

Or, if you want those blue fl owers to really stand out, try planting the little bulbs underneath a light coloured ground cover plant such as a golden low growing heather, so they can live together like a happy royal family, and the Queen Fabiola will pop and fl ower each summer, and then disappear again until next year – sounds like a good arrangement!

Are you interested in taking up a new and absorbing pastime of learning the art of arranging flowers?

If the answer is YES -----read on !

The Club has been in existence since 1971 and over the years members have actively involved themselves in Flower Festivals in churches around Caerphilly long before the current Annual Flower Festival organised by the Council was established and in the year 2000 we put on our own Millennium Flower Show that was quite spectacular.

The Club still takes part in the current Flower Festival that is held in the churches and chapels around Caerphilly town and also put on a display at our meeting place - the Twyn Community Centre.

Socially, we have trips out where we can watch professional arrangers at work, see gardens like Highgrove House; plus an Annual Outing in the Summer and a Dinner at Christmas.

Meetings are held at the Twyn Community Centre in Caerphilly town on 1st Tuesday 7-9 pm and 1st Wednesday 2-4 pm, of each month, where we are taught by instructors who are well versed in the art of arranging flowers.Classes will re-commence on Tuesday 4th September and Wednesday 5th September.

If you would like further information Tel: 029 20866018 or come along to one of our meetings, see flowers being arranged and chat to our members.

You would be very welcome. Why not bring a friend?

Did you know that there is a flourishing floral arranging club in Caerphilly ?

NELSONS PHARMACY

Health Feature

David Cameron’s recent launch of vouchers for parenting classes has highlighted how di cult it can be to parent well. There can often be situations - such as your young child screaming in a heap on the supermarket fl oor - when you feel that you have no control over their behaviour, but giving in to their demands doesn’t seem to improve things. However, dealing positively with bad behaviour in a calm, consistent way will help your child as they test you and push the boundaries.

Praising good behaviourYou’re probably aware of how often you tell your child o , but are you aware of how often you praise them? Parental praise is a big motivator for young children - it makes them feel happy, loved and secure and will raise their self-esteem. Little things like telling them they brushed their teeth really well, or put away their toys without being asked, are all positive a rmations which make them realise you are noticing them.

Keeping positiveWhen your child is misbehaving it can sometimes feel easier to give in to their demands for peace and quiet rather than stick to your guns. But every time you change your mind, you are telling your child that if they are persistent enough they will eventually win. Stay calm and before you say ‘no’, give yourself a few seconds to think your way round the situation that is positive for both of you. For instance, if your child starts playing up in a shop, say that if they behave now, you will do something fun later, or give them a treat. If they carry on misbehaving, warn them of the consequence and if it continues, take calm action, for instance taking away a privilege. For small children, any consequence must happen within a couple of hours to be e ective (for instance, missing a TV programme) as otherwise they won’t remember what it was related to. Be consistent: if they play up in the supermarket every time, make sure there is always a consequence.

Tackling trigger pointsThere are often certain points in the day which can cause problems - and if you are aware of these in advance, it will be much easier to deal with them.Going out: If you know your child needs time to adjust after a nap or likes to choose their own

Positive Parenting

clothes before going to nursery, make sure you factor in enough time. If they are indecisive, give a choice of two things and ask which one they would prefer. Meal times: Again, make sure your child has plenty of time to eat a meal and is not rushed. If they’re given foods they don’t like, o er an incentive to at least try it - and praise them when they do. Use this time to bond by sitting and chatting about their day.Bedtimes: Bath and bedtime is a lovely part of the day, but can sometimes be fraught. Chat about your child’s day and praise their good behaviour. Star charts for going to bed without a fi ght work well - with a small treat every few days for doing well. Don’t leave it a whole week as this is too long for young children.

The more positive interaction you have with your child, not only praising, but giving them fi rm boundaries for behaviour, really will help you to form a close, positive relationship.

Positive parenting helps your child to feel secure and loved

A Caerphilly Fundraising group who have been fundraising together for 26 years are celebrating raising an incredible £400,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. The Caerphilly Committee was started up in 1986 after the group got together to raise funds for the cancer charity.

The group has fi fteen members and have raised the fantastic sum of money through numerous coff ee mornings, events such as dinners and carol concerts and collections, to help local people aff ected by cancer.

They also have continued support from many local businesses including The Square Cafe, Blackwood, Tesco and Caerphilly Garden Centre to name just a few.

Margaret Bowen, Committee Chair said: “All the team work really hard and we have lots of support from people in the community. We wouldn’t have been able to reach this total without their continued loyalty.

We are all looking forward to continuing with our fundraising eff orts and raising even more money for local people aff ected by cancer.”

In 2011 Macmillan Cancer Support was able to help over 30 people in Caerphilly with more than £10,000 in grants to assist with additional costs such as additional heating bills, or travel to and from hospital appointments.

The groups fundraising eff orts have also contributed to the new cancer unit at Prince Charles Hospital and support other initiatives across South East Wales.

For information on getting involved with the Caerphilly Committee or for information on fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support please contact the team on 0300 1000 200 or email: [email protected].

Caerphilly events updateHi everyone,

The events team are busy at work as we plough through to September, which is full of exciting events to fill your calendar. The Big Cheese now seems a distant memory, but was a great success. Around 70,000 people visited this year’s event sampling sumptuous food, browsing craft, experiencing the thrills of the funfair and enjoying the reels of entertainment on offer. We were also very excited to have welcomed Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies, rugby legend Scott Quinnel, and a special visit from This Morning’s Matt Johnson, which created a buzz of excitement over the whole weekend.

September is set to be another exciting month so here’s some events to whet your appetite:On Friday 7th September Bargoed’s popular outdoor cinema event will be returning to Bargoed Emporium Car Park to screen Disney’s Cars 2 at 7.45pm. The event promises to be a great evening for all the family, so bring your picnic, blanket and chairs and sit back and enjoy the open air cinema experience. Entrance to the event is free; an adult must accompany children under 16. The Car park is just a short distance from the bus and railway station, for more info visit www.caerphilly.gov.uk/events or call the Visit Caerphilly Centre on 02920 880011.

Hot on the heels of the outdoor cinema is the return of the prestigious BBC Wales Proms in the Park to the Owain Glyndwr Fields on Saturday the 8th September at 7.45pm.

We are excited to be able to announce that BBC One show presenter Alex Jones will be co-presenting the event with Only Men Allowed conductor Tim Rhys-Evans for a night of magical themed entertainment including music from Harry Potter and Merlin. For a full repertoire of the performers for the event visit http://your.caerphilly.gov.uk/proms1

The spectacular event is one certainly not to be missed, so bring your blanket and enjoy a picnic with the family singing along to popular classics such as Sosban Fach, We’ll Keep A Welcome and Cwm Rhondda. The event will draw to a close with a stunning fireworks display overlooking the majestic sights of Caerphilly Castle. Tickets are £10 in advance (£12 on the day) with children 12 and under free with an accompanying adult. Tickets can be purchased in person from the Visit Caerphilly Centre or from Blackwood Miners Institute’ on 01495 227206 or via their website www.blackwoodminersinstitute.com

www.facebook.com/visitcaerphilly

Following on from the Proms we are eagerly anticipating a day of exciting cycling as the Tour of Britain returns and we welcome The Tour Ride to Caerphilly on Friday 14th September. After the success of cycling at this year’s Olympics the Tour of Britain will be bursting with excitement, as Gold Medallist Bradley Wiggins and the World’s fastest sprinter Mark Cavendish compete for Team Sky.

We are thrilled to be welcoming the Welsh Stage of the Tour Ride in Caerphilly, where amateur riders will start the 93 Kilometre ride in Caerphilly, take on some tough South Wales climbs including the famous climb of Rhigos and the Skoda King of the mountains climb Caerphilly Mountain to finish the race back in Caerphilly.

The Tour Ride is your opportunity to ride into the applause of hundreds of fans and raise money for a charity of your choice. For more information on the

route and to fill in an application form visit the Wales section at http://www.tourride.co.uk/ Don’t forget to follow Visit Caerphilly on Twitter & like us on Facebook for up-to-date info on our events and what’s on in the County Borough.

Hope you all had a fantastic summer and enjoy our events in September.

Thought for the Month I watched a little video clip on You Tube the other day – it featured a comedian who often makes me smile on the BBC programme Qi (Alan Davies).

This section of the programme was apparently not broadcast, and it featured a discussion about the foodstuff called ‘Manna’, and how in the Bible we are told that God provided Manna miraculously each day to the People of Israel as they wondered thorough the desert.

Alan was clearly, and perhaps understandably, exasperated by the story … and the people who choose to believe it. He is a clever and articulate chap, and his anger and argument got my attention.

“Why do people believe this stuff?” was the gist of his speech.

It is a very good question Alan, thanks for that!So I started thinking ….The first thing I realised is that you couldn’t make this stuff up! The word Manna meant “What is it?” – which is presumably what the hungry Israelites would have said when they found this dust-like food falling from the sky.

It may seem ‘a little bit crazy’ to believe some of the stuff in the Bible, and in a strange way I am relieved about that – because if it was all very logical, comfortable and ‘believable’ then it would probably be just another ‘man-made feel-good philosophy’ which doesn’t call us to change, and doesn’t challenge the way we think about ourselves, each other, and God.

If we only believe what we see, understand and agree with we end up with a God ‘who looks just like us’ – and what use is that?

I have found that when you scratch at the surface of Bible stories there is a real gem of truth, often a challenge, which, when applied with the right heart enriches life – which is one reason why I am trying work out how to believe and apply them.

44 Caerphilly Miners Centre Campaign FUTURE HOPES FOR CAERPHILLY MINERSCaerphilly Miners project has worked with local young people to produce eye-catching boards in front of the old hospital site, alongside those of Lovell and United Welsh.

Designed and painted by pupils from St Martins and St Cenydd Comprehensive Schools, trainees from ACT Training and members of Drug Aid’s arts project, they depict the future vision of the project. This inspiring initiative comes from Caerphilly Miners Well-Being Group – where partners of health and education, arts and leisure providers work to encourage activities to improve well-being. In launching the boards in August, Jeff Cuthbert, AM, Chair of Caerphilly Miners, said: “This is an excellent example of local collaboration and an important step on our journey to develop the building as a community resource.” More boards will follow in September.

Bookings taken now for October 2012 edition 2012. Deadline is Monday 24th September 2012

High Tech TVAlthough TV technology has changed dramatically over the years, with sets getting bigger, thinner and more detailed - and in some cases three-dimensional - the way we use them has barely changed until now. Here’s how some of tech’s biggest names want to transform your television.

Samsung’s awfully named UE40ES8000 TV shows where things are heading. Its bright 40-inch LED display can handle both 2D and 3D and more interestingly, can be controlled by waving at it. Your fi rst wave gets the TV’s attention, and you can then change channels or volume with simple gestures. There’s a lot to gesture at. In addition to a Freeview HD tuner, there’s also integrated Wi-Fi wireless networking so that the TV can connect to your wireless network, enabling iPad-style apps such as the BBC iPlayer and YouTube. You can also subscribe to fi lm-on-demand services such as Lovefi lm and Netfl ix, or use social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. There’s even a Skype application for making voice and video calls.

It’s clever stu , but there are two problems. The fi rst is the price. At £1,499 the UE40ES8000 is the

cheapest in the range. The second is that we tend to keep our TVs for much longer than we do our computers. Will Samsung’s apps still work three years from

now, or fi ve? Will something better come along and make it obsolete?

For now the smarter choice

might be a box that brings similar features to your existing TV. Apple’s TV (£99) is one option, o ering iTunes movie downloads and rentals as well as optional Netfl ix video on demand. It can also stream movies from your Mac, PC, iPad or iPhone. A similar Google-powered set from Sony, the NSZ-GS7 (£200) goes on sale this summer, and a version that also includes a Blu-Ray disc player is expected later this year.

If you’d considered an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 but dismissed them because

you’re not too interested in games, it might be time to think again: both consoles have dropped in price (you can get them for less than £150) and become powerful multimedia systems. For example the Xbox has its own Zune video marketplace as well as apps for Sky TV, Lovefi lm

and Netfl ix. Nintendo’s Wii is handy here, too, with both iPlayer and Netfl ix available, and you can even get Lovefi lm and Netfl ix-enabled DVD players. Just bear in mind that to access those services you’ll need to connect your devices to the internet, and you’ll also need to pay a subscription fee for the video on demand services.

Today’s TV technology is very clever, but the big

question is whether Apple TV, Google TV or any other high-tech system will take

over the mainstream: many of us fi nd Sky+ boxes and Virgin Media TiVo’s enough hassle, and adding all kinds of apps and services to the gogglebox could annoy as many people as it enthuses. There’s also the issue that technology isn’t always as good as it’s cracked up to be: despite our Xbox having both voice and gesture recognition in the shape of its Kinect sensor, we’ve often found ourselves bellowing and waggling our arms with no e ect whatsoever. If your current TV set-up is doing everything you need it to do, it might be a good idea to wait a few years before upgrading. That way you’ll see what,

if any, TV technology emerges triumphant.
