My Journey to the Cassamance – Rudy Green During my summer break I had the incredible opportunity to visit West Africa to learn and study the repertoire of the kora where it originates. I have been learning for the past 2 years with Kadialy Kouyate and with his help and many contacts I chose to study in Kolda along the Cassamance River where he grew up. I arrived in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, late at night in August and was greeted by my host Lamine Sissoko who works as a primary school teacher and Abdou Cissokho, the son of the famous kora player of the Cassamance, Soundioulou Cissokho (1921 – 1994). I left for Abdou’s house in the heart of the capital and within minutes of being in the country the tape player in car blasts out ‘Allah la ke’ performed by Sidiki Diabate (senior) and I immediately knew I was in the right place. Abdou is an excellent kora luthier and I was welcomed with 4 koras in my room (there were more koras than furniture!) which were only a selection of over 20 that he has been building since 1988. That night I showed off what I could already play starting with ‘Kassouma ma’ a popular song by Seckouba Bambino from the 90’s. Just as I finished I could hear Bakari (Abdou’s son) playing every song in the next room. Throughout my trip every kora player I met knew almost the entire vast kora repertoire but what is most fascinating is how each has their own style and flair of playing the pieces, sometimes so different it sounds like a new piece entirely. I spent 13 hours traveling in a ‘sept plus’ to Kolda with Lamine in a cramped car shared by 8 people, a baby and 2 goats. This is the most popular way to travel as it’s quite cheap but it’s a fantastic way to see the landscape of Baobabs and lively markets. Learning with Vieux Kanoute of Kolda
