The Task

Working as a member of an architectural team you are

competing against other companies to win the contract to

design a state-of-the-art teaching area on a given site.

The teaching area must accommodate 100 students and

must fit within the area shown on your copy of the site

area.

Consider

• What would school have to be like to make you want to spend a lot of time there?

• How many students would you put into one learning space at a time?

• What subjects are going to be taught in your new classroom?

Page 4: My ideal learning environment A Year 7 Project. GR Nov 2007 The Task Working as a member of an architectural team you are competing against other companies

GR Nov 2007

Consider

• How much space would be needed to accommodate the technology and the types of learning activities you envision?

• How much of the site are you willing to give up for parking?.. athletic fields? .. roads? (are there other options worth considering?)

Decide

• How many learning spaces you’ll need to accommodate 100 students

• Whether to stack the learning spaces, fan them, scatter them, cluster them, etc.

• How to connect all the spaces (walkways on the ground, above ground, underground?)

Drawing a Plan

Each square = 1m

To calculate the area of the wall we need to first

find its length.

Calculating the area of the wall

The Wall is 60m long.

If we want the wall to be 3m high(which is the height of your classrooms)

Then the area of the wall is

60 x 3 = 180m2.

You must

• Draw a scale drawing of your teaching block• Draw a scale drawing of one of the classrooms in more

detail• Complete the sheet showing the costs of your building• Produce drawings to show what the teaching block will

look like from different views• Be prepared to explain your design and the reasons to

your teacher

Key Points

The teaching area must accommodate 100 students and must fit within the area shown on your copy of the site area.

There is not a price limit but you must be able to explain your decisions.

You will be required to give a short presentation during the last 50 minutes of the day and the best group will go through to the final which will be held in the hall at 2.50pm.
