It is a great pleasure to note that HITSAA is releasing its first Newsletter! I am glad that many alumni events are being organised under the HITSAA banner. I greet the office bearers and all the alumni members on this occasion and I encourage each of you to build a vibrant and interactive alumni network and to promote and realise its objectives.

Hindustan Group has been providing knowledge, skills and training to the youth of the country during the past 50

years to help them fulfil their aspirations and ambitions. Hindustan has over 50,000 alumni trained in different

branches of Engineering, Technology, Arts and Sciences.

I am immensely pleased to know that HITSAA is bringing out the first edition of the Newsletter to connect and

benefit the alumni of our University. I congratulate and appreciate the efforts taken by HITSAA Office bearers and

the Coordinators, and wish them great success in all their endeavours to achieve the objectives.

My dear Fellow Alumni,I am indeed delighted to address all of you vide the launch and

release of the FIRST edition of HITSAA Newsletter! Hope this newsletter achieves its objective of connecting one and all of

the highly esteemed HINDUSTAN UNIVERSITY family of Alumni, Academia and next generation leaders in the making.

I call all our alumni friends to come together under the banner of HITSAA for fruitful professional networking and development.

Hindustan Technology Business Incubator and Hindustan Entrepreneurship & Innovation Centre were inaugurated by the University and these initiatives will go a long way in supporting

the START UP INDIA campaign. Alumni desiring to register their start up projects may contact HITSAA Office at the campus for

further information. HITSAA is promoting several interesting areas of technology and path breaking ideas. I request all the alumni to participate in all the initiatives of HITSAA, besides contributing to the main agenda of our association, namely, Social/ Knowledge/ Sports/ Career Guidance and Cultural exchanges. I would like to

conclude my address with the message SHARE, INNOVATE, EXCEL, PROSPER. I hope the message will be received in the right spirit of

innovation and ultimately lead to the prosperity of one and all.

Congratulations to HITSAA on the release of its inaugural Newsletter. I am glad to know that the Alumni Association is steadily growing in membership and is functioning actively. Silver Jubilee Re-union of First Batch (1989) - 2 Aug 2014

61 alumni from different countries across the globe attended the fabulous event with their families. Alumni felicitated 10 faculty who taught them in HCE. They planted 25 tree saplings on the campus to promote Green Environment Concept.

14 alumni from 1st batch MBA (1996) visited the campus on 26 July 2014. They visited their old classroom; recalled the pleasant times they spent as students. They went around the campus, visited MBA dept., and interacted with faculty. They advised that Entrepreneurship and Business models should be the area of focus for MBA students.

At the India vs. Pakistan Independence Cup

held on 14th & 15th August at Doha International Cricket Stadium, Qatar, Mr. Favas steered the Qatar Indian Cricket team to debut victory by scoring 30 runs and bagged 5 wickets. He was adjudged the Man of the Match & Player of the tournament, owing to his excellent all-rounder performance.

ALUMNI ARTICLES“RIDE TO GLORY”

Dr. Arvind Thiruvengadam did his Masters and PhD at West Virginia

University and later on became a Research Assistant Professor in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the university and a part of the core group of the Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines & Emissions (CAFEE).

One fine day in March 2013, when he and his colleague Marc Besch went for a long 2,400 mile round trip between Los Angeles and Seattle, to test a rented Volkswagen Passat, he didn’t know that the journey would be a landmark in the history of automotive Industry. They were surprised during the journey that the NOx (mono nitrogen oxide) emission level of

the Passat – the test vehicle that came to them accidentally in response to their newspaper advertisement requesting for a European make diesel car test vehicle – was five to 20 times higher than the European standards.

These researchers, who were emission testing three European make vehicles in real-world driving conditions, found the same with the other Volkswagen model, Jetta, too. It showed 15 to 35 times higher emissions than EPA standards, while the third vehicle, a BMW X5, did fine. This was contrary to the “perfect and within EPA standard emission levels” that the Volkswagen cars showed during labs test. They double-and-triple checked their work. But the result was same.

The tests showed something unexpected - large differences between the emissions during their driving tests and that during in-house tests at California Air Resources Board. Subsequent investigations found that the cars have a defeat device - a program in the engine control unit computer that recognizes that the vehicle is being emissions tested. The device

could detect if the engines were working and the steering wheel was not moving - that happens only during lab tests. It would then turn on the catalytic scrubber up to full power that would minimize the emissions, allowing the car to pass the tests.

What unfolded was one of the biggest frauds in the history of automobiles. Volkswagen (VW) was cheating. The fallouts - CEO of the much trusted automaker resigned; VW had to recall millions of cars from various parts of the world and face potential bans of its diesel models; it may have to pay an $18 billion fine; its investors saw more than 25 billion Euros wiped off the value of the VW stock in just 5 days, and a whole rethinking is happening about the emission regulation of vehicles all over the world.

So what are the implications for India, if any? Arvind feels there is a lot for the Indian regulators to take away from this event as India has significantly greater number of diesel passenger cars than in the US.

“DIVING INTO THE UNCHARTED”Ms. Sugatha Balagopal (AERO-UG 2013)

At the tender age of 18, you are shoved to assume that you stand

at the crossroads of your life; expected to make that huge decision of what identity you want to assume for the rest of it. I don’t know how much I agree with that age criteria being slapped on us. As we progress in life and have more experiences, see more places, meet more people, we tend to look back at our younger selves and see ourselves in a whole new light. When I was 18, I decided I wanted to be an engineer. And no, it was not an idea that was infused

in me by my folks or any other societal pressure for that matter. It was my own fantasies that shaped me into choosing Aeronautical engineering. I aspired to find out the magical mystery of the huge mechanical structure that lifts into air effortlessly carrying humans across continents. Do I have any regrets? Not at all… As I progressed through the 4 years, I learnt about myself. I knew I loved the mysteries and intricacies of mechanics, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, but another facet pulled me stronger- the economics, the administration and people aspect of the system. As graduation day drew closer, I decided to appear for CAT to immerse myself into the managerial world. But something in me told me I was not quite ready.

Touching base at AdiantaOne fine day, as I sat browsing Facebook, I stumbled upon a scholarship about a course claiming to train people

in entrepreneurship, leadership, and innovation skills in a practical, ‘experiential’ manner. Intrigued I was. I applied, got through and landed in Delhi not quite knowing what to expect. Adianta happened. A whole new arena for me to experiment in and with... I met exciting people with high aspirations of building the “next big thing” and people who wanted to build enterprises without getting too involved with the numbers side of things. I myself built the confidence to work on my own start up while also working at other start-ups, all while attending lectures from the horses’ mouth- people who worked in the field and knew what they were talking about. This was also one such place where taking risks was normal and the optimistic vibes supported the plunge plenty. This solidified my intuition of pursuing my curiosity into the managerial world.

How I landed up in BogotaSome things just pop up when the time is right. I was looking for work experience. The AIESEC fellowship (Youth Global Fellowship Program) came by. It was true bliss to know that making the cut meant you get to intern in one of the 4 countries- Russia, Colombia, Turkey, or Mexico- all paid! And so, here I am in Bogota. Do I have steadfast rules as to what I am to do? No. I guess that attitude helps in a way. Keeps me flexible and exploring uncharted realms. Working in a new environment where the culture and language is a challenge that has taught me a lot. The opportunity to amaze people because of your roots, be it in the form of dance or culture or food is just icing on the cake.

#RoadNotTakenHave I taken a road usually not taken? Yes. I paved it as I went along. Reflecting on myself, not letting the decisions and credentials of my past weigh me down. Something that I wrote last year, is still so relevant... A perpetual continuum...

It’s almost two and half months now in my new home; the monsoon has silently hid herself behind the curtains like a blushing bride. Yes there are still a few showers now and then reminding me of the initial honeymoon period, but the muse has become the wife now. Familiarity’s ill-fated twin, contempt, is slowly trying to pollute my troubled mind. Disturbed, I look back at the sheer excitement that engulfed me, when I saw the hallowed pond for the first time. As Ilayaraja played in my Ipod, I had discovered a newfound skip in my step when I sashayed wondering if the rumoured crocodile would say ‘hi’ to his only nocturnal visitor. I had believed nights were meant for ‘small talk with the stars’ and for penning poems in the moonlight; a well deserved escape after a hard day of meaningful work. Oh how naive I was. A stark contrast called reality slaps me now. The maestro’s tunes that had echoed across the pond in the night have been replaced by the cacophony of supply chain jargons that extend well beyond sunrise. I wonder if the crocodile, is feeling conscious of being surrounded by rats shouting and racing against each other.

Rats running behind cheese, working this rainy day to save for a better and brighter summer. Wasn’t it supposed to be the other way round? But who listens. Still I care, because slowly but surely I am becoming one among them. Remember the Animorphs books of yore? Whose foot notes we flipped as children just to see the magical mutation of a human being into an animal. Yes friends… we are just the rodent edition of Animorphs. Peter Pettigrews cloaked in a lie called ‘Scabbers’. And I am sure we are smart enough to come up with a well drafted, verified and rehearsed explanation justifying this rodent behaviour, like answers to our HR questions - it would of course be spot on. But did anyone care that the moment we drafted or copy pasted answers for ‘tell me about yourself?’, our friend “spontaneity” died a silent death. His funeral had no attendants, coz it was not a compulsory guest lecture. These 75 days, I have attended every clichéd process that a typical Indian B school student has to go through to get baptized (Human to rat mutation). Pointless interviews which had hypocrites under the garb of panellists, typical factory made parties where the surprise quotient was conspicuously absconding, lame faculties who gave lamer assignments which were supposed to artificially extract feelings out of students. And don’t even get me started about the CV thing. Oh how I wished my B school would be different; where I would actually learn and not be someone else’s idea of what my area of specialization would be.

Yes I was a fish out of water in an IT company and still remain the same here, despite 3 water bodies surrounding me. Beat that for Irony! But despite all this whining, am thankful for this place for teaching me things the hard and irritating way. Yes these 75 days have battered and bruised me, but I have come out of it bleeding but wise by realizing and gaining some valuable survival skills in this battlefield! I’ve realized that… being loud is more important than being rightI’ve realized that… unless you are useful, you are invisible and beneath anyone’s sightI’ve realized that...that you can absolutely adore someone and yet they wouldn’t careI’ve realized that...you can run all you can, run some more and still get nowhereI’ve realized that...you can be alone, yet not lonelyI’ve realized that…you can be in a party, yet pine for books - your delightful company I’ve realized that...I could do things just because some said I couldn’tI’ve realized that…You might find the rat race funny, yet someone else didn’tI’ve realized that…Some women are indeed innocent, but most of them feignI’ve realized that…An episode of friends is a panacea for all the pain I’ve realized that...sometimes, the road not taken is not-taken for a reasonI’ve realized that…someday the fish out of water, would survive till the rainy seasonI’ve realized that…someday the laughter will return to my eyesI’ve realized that...someday we’ll all learn that we are more than just mice

School of Aeronautical Sciences Acquires Chetak Helicopter

NEW ADDITION AT CAMPUS

The Chetak Multipurpose Helicopter is an improved version of Alouette III and was awarded civil airworthiness certificate on 12 Dec 1961. It has a tricycle type undercarriage and can carry seven passengers including the pilots. The Helicopter Division of HAL, Bangalore manufactures the versatile and Multipurpose Chetak Helicopters for Civil and Military applications both for Domestic and International customers.
