Theatr Mwldan is situated in the centre of Cardigan - turn left atthe north end of the High Street/Pendre. There is ample parkingbehind the theatre for cars and coaches. Parking is free after 6pm. EXHIBITION: GREAT ART ON SCREENManet: Portraying Life This eagerly awaited exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts will be thefirst ever major exhibition in the UK devoted to the portraiture ofEdouard Manet. Spanning the entire career of this enigmatic (and attimes controversial) artist, Manet: Portraying Life will bring togethergreat works from across Europe, Asia and the USA.

Manet’s engagement with portraiture has never been explored in anexhibition form, despite it forming around half of his artistic output.Manet painted his family, friends and the literary, political and artisticfigures of his day, giving life not only to his subjects but also to Parisiansociety of the time.

The exhibition consists of more than 50 works; including masterpieceslike Music in the Tuileries, Olympia, Luncheon on the Grass and The

Railway (pictured). Also featured are portraits of Manet’s most frequentsitter, his wife Suzanne Leenhoff, luminaries of the period Antonin Proust,Émile Zola and Stéphane Mallarmé, and scenes from everyday liferevealing Manet’s forward-thinking, modern approach to portraiture.

The event film also reveals exclusive behind-the-scenes moments of theRoyal Academy’s exhibition preparation – moments usually hidden fromview – and interweaves a detailed, superbly crafted biography of Manetand 19th century Paris. PEOPLE A new play by Alan Bennett

Award-winning writer Alan Bennett is reunited with director Nicholas Hytner and Olivier Award-winning actressFrances de la Tour, with whom he worked on The History Boys

and The Habit of Art.

People spoil things; there are so many of them and the lastthing one wants is them traipsing through one’s house. Butwith the park a jungle and a bath on the billiard table, what isone to do? Dorothy (Frances de la Tour) wonders if an attic salecould be a solution.

Alan Bennett is one of Britain’s most celebrated playwrights,and the much anticipated People is the sixth of his plays tohave its premiere at the National Theatre. Following its originalrun at the National Theatre, The History Boys transferred toBroadway, winning the Tony Award for Best Play in 2006, andtoured internationally before being turned into a film, againdirected by Nicholas Hytner and with a cast including Frances de la Tour.

Bennett and Hytner also collaborated on the award-winningplay and film The Madness of King George and their last stageproduction, The Habit of Art, was broadcast as part of NationalTheatre Live in 2010.

LA DONNA DEL LAGOThe ultimate bel canto cast is assembled for this important

yet rarely performed masterpiece. Based on Sir Walter

Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake, La donna del lago is the

most fully Romantic of Rossini’s Italian operas. Expansive

ensembles and shimmering orchestration generate an

opulence seldom heard in the composer’s comic works.

In Renaissance Scotland, King James V travels to the tribal

Highlands, where he falls in love with Elena – the lady of the

lake. Her father is fighting with the clans against the King’s

rule and has promised Elena’s hand in marriage to a clan

leader, Rodrigo. Meanwhile Elena herself is in love with the

young romantic hero Malcolm. The plot inspired some truly

galvanizing scenes, most memorably the stunning

confrontation between the tenors Uberto (James V in

disguise) and Rodrigo.

John Fulljames’s staging evokes the exoticized mystery of

Rossini’s Romantic landscape, and provides an insight into this

rich but under-explored seam of operatic gold. In the hands of

three of the leading bel canto voices of our time, Juan Diego

Flórez (Count Almaviva in The Royal Opera’s Il barbiere di

Siviglia, Tonio in The Royal Opera’s La Fille du régiment),

Joyce DiDonato (who sang the title role in Cendrillon with The

Royal Opera last Season), and Colin Lee (Tonio in the 2012

Benjamin Britten’s Gloriana was commissioned by the RoyalOpera House to mark the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953.William Plomer drew on Lytton Strachey’s Elizabeth and

Essex to create the libretto, which artfully combines modernand archaic forms of English. Britten’s score is similarlydiverse: it mixes the sounds and manners of Tudor England– from lute songs to courtly dances – with the composer’sown distinctive style.

Moving from the pomp of state ceremony to the intimacy ofthe Queen’s private rooms, Gloriana depicts the public andprivate faces of the Virgin Queen, and the deterioration ofher relationship with the impulsive Earl of Essex. EXHIBITION: GREAT ART ON SCREENMunch 150 In 2013, all of Norway will be celebrating the 150th anniversaryof the birth of Edvard Munch (1863–1944), one of the toweringfigures of modern art. This is already being hailed a “once-in-a-

lifetime show”. Global interest is huge - not least as a result ofone of his four The Scream (pictured) paintings having recentlyset a public art auction record of $120 million.

Munch 150 will be co-hosted by the National Museum and theMunch Museum, both in Oslo. This exhibition is the mostambitious presentation of Munch’s art ever. With 220 paintings itwill display the greatest number of Munch’s key works ever.Many know Munch as the man who painted The Scream, but hiscomplete works are remarkable and secure his place as one ofthe greatest artists to have ever lived.

Once again, this event film will be going behind-the-scenes toshow some of the process of putting the exhibition together – aswell as touring Norway to provide an in-depth biography of aman who lived from the mid-19th century right through to theGerman occupation of Norway in the Second World War.Norwegian and international guests will also offer their expertinsight and knowledge to host Tim Marlow. For the past decade, Nidi d’Arac have been experimenting

with mixing the music of the Salento region of southern

Italy with electronica and contemporary dance beats.

Lead singer of the band is the eclectic musician from

Lecce, Alessandro Coppola, whose creativity and love for

his land have produced a passionate and mindful research

of contents coming from the tradition, the music, the

poetry, the folklore of the Mediterranean culture, acquired

and elaborated.

The music by Nidi d’Arac is pure pleasure of dance and

sound, it is an ongoing party, it is emotional involvement,

it is spirituality. The power of this versatile ensemble is an

immediate and almost physical way through, thanks also

to the audacious attempt of mixing the traditional triplets

rhythm of the tambourine of the Salento ‘pizzica’ with the

chaotic reality.

Nidi D’Arac have performed alongside Robert Plant, Kimmo

Pohjonen, Enzo Avitabile and Mory Kante and Cesaria Evora.

They have performed at Babel Med Music , Womex, Womad

and the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. From Salento to

Europe, all the way to Africa, Brazil and the States, the band

has exported the traditional culture rooted in our geographic

basin bringing passion and expertise to many important

European festivals.

Chris Nurse uses a variety of media including painting,printmaking, drawing and object making. He studied at the Central School of Art, the RCA and the BritishSchool at Rome and is Senior Lecturer in Painting andPrintmaking at the University of Glamorgan. He paintsfrom assemblages of found objects reminiscent ofmodels made by non-artists, children and amateurs.The title of the exhibition, ffffffffffffff… is the sound of white noise from tuned out analogue technology; a no man’s land between channels.

“I am interested in portraying the space betweenfantasy and mundane reality, between an imaginedideal and what is actually realized through contingentmaterials or deficiencies of skill. You could think of it asthe difference between self-image and how othersmight see us. My work connects to the vanitas traditionwithin art where pride in learning and wealth are shownas futile in the face of the inevitability of death. I havebeen pulling apart a book entitled Celebrities of the

British Army from 1900 and painting from structurescreated from the pages. The book has enormous pathosbecause these whiskered faces and scarlet tunics willbe no match for events 14 years later.”

Cardigan Art Society was formed more than 30 years ago by agroup of painters who wished to promote the visual arts producedin this area. Through a long history of support for and activity atTheatr Mwldan, this organisation’s annual exhibition is a popularfixture in the Oriel Mwldan’s gallery program.Cardigan Art Society’s membership comprises both established andemerging artists, most of whom live and work in Cardigan and thesurrounding areas of West Wales. Currently the society enjoys amembership of increasing diversity, which is a testimony to theartistic achievement attainable within a local community.

CARDIGAN ART SOCIETY:SUMMER SHOW 2013

Sean Harris, whilst hailing from a background inprintmaking, is perhaps best known for his work inanimation - and mesmeric images which uniquely combineprint, landscapes and prehistoric objects. In creatingexperimental films that explore both personal and widercultural mythologies, he has collaborated extensively withmajor museums across the world including The BritishMuseum and the Smithsonian Institution.

At Oriel Mwldan, he presents a new and very personal pieceThe Wild (made with financial assistance from the ArtsCouncil of Wales) alongside other works which explore boththe human impulse to ‘capture’ resonant moments in timeand the timelessness of the creative process itself.
