Welcome to the Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) 2017 state application. Students must complete all components of the application before it will be considered for state level competition. The first task of the student online application (Provide Contact Information: Primary Parent/Legal Guardian) is designed to collect the correct name and email address of the primary parent/legal guardian. This will generate an email that is sent directly to the primary parent/legal guardian alerting him/her to complete the permission form. The Primary Parent/Legal Guardian Permission form MUST be completed by the primary parent/legal guardian of the nominated student before the student can complete any portion of the online application.
The GHP state application will be available to state nominees for completion beginning November 18, 2016 through January 4, 2017. For more information about the program, please visit the GHP webpage. All GHP applications must be completed using the GHP online application system through FluidReview. No paper applications submitted in lieu of the online application will be accepted and scored.
Students must submit a completed online application by midnight of the deadline, January 4, 2017. The 2017 GHP online application includes the following tasks and components:

Note: Incomplete student applications will not be reviewed.

Provide Contact Information: Primary Parent/Legal Guardian
The Primary Parent/Legal Guardian form is the first task of the student online application. The nominated student must provide contact information from a parent to begin the online application. The application will ONLY be available in its entirety once the primary parent/legal guardian has completed the parent task.
Please fill in all of the required information about the primary parent/legal guardian in the fields below. The information in this form will be used to send him/her an email to complete the parent permission form. Please be sure to use a valid email address that the primary parent/legal guardian regularly uses. Sometimes these emails may get caught in spam so please ask the primary parent/legal guardian to check their spam folder in the event that they do not see the request.

Required Assignment: Music Video
All videos will be uploaded into the GHP online application through YouTube. ALL VIDEOS NEED TO BE MARKED AS UNLISTED WHEN YOU ARE UPLOADING THEM INTO YOUTUBE. Please click Instructions for Student Video Submissions or Instructions for Student Video Submissions by Phone for specific directions on how to use YouTube to upload an unlisted YouTube video. 1. Introduction: At the beginning, SIMPLY state ONLY your first name, instrument, and number of years you have played. Then describe your interest in Music and what you hope to gain from attending the program. (Please be brief: 15 seconds is typical length for the introduction. Please do NOT include your school name, school district, or names of other individuals.) 2. Performance: Before your performance, state the titles and composers of your selections. The maximum combined performance length for the audition is six minutes. When recording your performance, keep in mind that the production quality of the video is not as important as making sure that the judges will be able to see and hear you. Please be sure that you and your instrument fit in the frame (from head to foot). Please note: Absolutely NO GROUP PERFORMANCDE VIDEOS, PERFORMANCE DOCUMENTARY VIDEOS, OR EXCERPTS FROM DEMO TAPES will be reviewed. 3. Suggested Repertoire: Nominees in Vocal or Strings should choose a performance selection of comparable difficulty and musicianship as the suggested repertoire references. If not specified below, all other concentrations should choose a performance selection of comparable difficulty and musicianship as selections from all-state band or honor ensembles.
• Jazz - One or two jazz-style solos, etudes, transcriptions, or tunes. Suggested Repertoire: all-state jazz prepared etudes; jazz etude books by Jim Snidero, Bob Mintzer, or Greg Fishman; solo transcriptions; standard jazz tunes from the Real Book (6th edition).
o Drum - Nominees should demonstrate basic jazz styles: swing, bossa nova, Latin, rock, funk. Nominees should also demonstrate some improvisation.
o Note: Nominees may play unaccompanied or with recorded accompaniment (recordings or computer backing tracks).
• Percussion: Short prepared selections for Snare Drum, Keyboard Percussion, and Timpani
o Snare Drum: Cirone’s Portraits in Rhythm, Peters’ Intermediate or Advanced Studies, Albright’s Contemporary Studies, Delcecluse Douze Etudes, etc.
o Keyboard: Two-Mallet: Goldenberg Etudes, Rags of George Hamilton Green or Harry Breuer, music of JS Bach, etc. Four-Mallet (4 1/3 octave): Peters’ Yellow After the Rain, Gomez’s Rain Dance, Sammut’s Rotation II or IV, etc.
o Timpani: Exercises from Goodman’s Modern Method, Hochrainer Etudes, Delecluse Etudes, Beck Sonata for Timpani, Borghesani Turbo, etc.

• Piano - A recording representing technical and musical level Acceptable compositions include: a complete (or portion of) a fast movement from a classical sonata (Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven) and/or a Chopin or Liszt etude.
• Strings - An excerpt of solo Bach AND an excerpt from a concerto/sonata of comparable difficulty to the suggestions listed below
o Violin: Bach Partita, Bruch Concerto No. 1 in G Minor, Kreisler Praeludium and Allegro, Mendelssohn Concerto in E Minor, Mozart Concertos No. 3, 4, or 5, Lalo Symphonie Espagnole, Saint- Saens Introduction and Rondo capriccioso.
o Viola: J.C. Bach Concerto (1st movement), J.S. Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Bloch Suite Hebraique, Handel Concerto, Hoffmeister Viola Concerto in D, Schubert Arpeggione Sonata, Stamitz Concerto, Walton Concerto.
o Cello: Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Beethoven or Brahms Sonata, Boccherini Concerto in B-flat Major, Haydn Concerto in C Major, Elgar Concerto, Kabalevsky Concerto No. 1 (1st movement), Lalo Concerto, Saint-Saens Allegro Appassionato, Saint-Saens Concerto in A minor (1st movement)
o Double Bass: Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Bottesini Concerto No. 2 in B major 9 or A), Dittersdorf Conerto in E major (or D), Dragonetti Concerto in A major (or G), Koussevitzky Concerto in F-sharp minor (or E), Vanhal Concerto in C major (or D), Paganini Moses Variations.
• Vocal - An art song, folk song, or aria Acceptable style books include: 24 Italian Songs and Arias, 28 Italian Songs and Arias, The First Book of Soprano/Mezzo-Soprano/Tenor/Baritone/Bass Solos, Pathways of Song, Standard Vocal Literature- An Introduction to Repertoire, English Songs- Renaissance to Baroque.
• Woodwinds - Record contrasting etudes, excerpts, or solos that best represent ability. Suggested Repertoire: The nominee may choose to record a portion of this list or do other musical pieces exclusively. It is strongly recommended that you consult an instructor prior to making a final choice for repertoire. Most excerpts are available online at www.imslp.org. (Please note “m.” denotes measure numbers; numbers alone denote rehearsal markings.)
o Bassoon – Dukas, Sorcerer’s Apprentice (7-9); Mozart, Marriage of Figaro I (mm. 1-29), Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 5, I. (Q to 13 after Q); Mozart, Concerto; Weber, Concerto; Weissenborn and Milde etude books.
o Clarinet – Mendelssohn, Scherzo from A Midsummer Night’s Dream (beginning to B, 16 after F to G); Beethoven, Symphony No. 6, I. and II.; Brahms, Symphony No. 3, II. (mm. 1-22). Rose etude books (32 or 40); Mozart, Concerto; Weber, Concerto (either), Duo, or Concertino; Kovacs, Hommage á Manuel de Falla; Hindemith, Sonata.
