SALZBURG WEILL CORNELL SEMINARS OF THE OPEN MEDICAL INSTITUTE (OMI)
In 1993, physicians from Weill Medical College of
Cornell University enthusiastically agreed to share
their knowledge and expertise with young
colleagues from the former communist world.
What began with one Salzburg Weill Cornell
Seminar has evolved into the Open Medical
Institute, which organizes 40 seminars, 150
observerships and 20 in-country symposia each
year. This is made possible by dedicated faculty
members from Weill Cornell Medical College
(NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, The Hospital for
Special Surgery, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer
Center), The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia,
Cleveland Clinic and Duke University Medical
Center. Over 18,000 doctors from Central and
Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Russia, Africa, the
Middle East and Latin America have participated,
and significantly, the overwhelming majority
have remained in their country of origin, thereby
effecting lasting brain gain.
The Open Medical Institute operates under the
auspices of The American Austrian Foundation
with funding from the Open Society Foundations,
the Austrian Ministry of Science, Research, and
Economy and other donors.
Increasingly, the international community is
making the connection between peace, health
and development. The UN’s Sustainable
Development Goals say that peace and justice
are essential for development, and the 2016
high-level panel on the global response to health
crises states that health is essential for
sustainable development and for building resilient
societies. Recent pandemics show that without
qualified healthcare professionals on the ground,
it is impossible to prevent diseases from spreading.
The Salzburg Weill Cornell Seminars of the Open
Medical Institute have consistently built capacity
by offering multiple, short-term, clinical study
opportunities. This is in direct contrast to traditional,
research-oriented fellowships of two years or
more, which have increased brain drain. Doctors
who participate in long-term fellowships are
often unwilling to return home because their
local research facilities do not compare favorably
with those of their host institution. By focusing
on clinical education, and offering short-term
fellowships, we have ensured that doctors from
countries in transition can update their skills, and
implement what they have learned immediately
after returning home, and our dedicated faculty,
all of whom serve pro bono, continue to serve as
mentors.
Despite globalization, medical care is local.
Through the Salzburg Weill Cornell Seminars of
the Open Medical Institute, highly qualified,
English-speaking clinicians from resource-poor
societies gain access to the international
community of physicians, and, over time, have
significantly improved the quality of healthcare
in their countries.
