Show historyThe Drowsy Chaperone is a musical comedy with book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar and music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. It debuted in 1998 at The Rivoli in Toronto and opened on Broadway on May 1, 2006.

The Drowsy Chaperone was nominated for a record-breaking 13 Tony Awards and won 5 including Best Book and Best Score. The show has also had productions in London, Japan and Australia as well as 2 North American tours.

Fun FactsThe Drowsy Chaperone started when McKellar, Lambert and Morrison created a spoof of old musicals for the stag party of Bob Martin and Janet Van de Graaff. After its initial presentation, Bob joined his friends on stage and joked, “What a wonderful show. I have some notes.” Those notes would be inspiration for the “Man in Chair” character, the narrator of the show, played by Martin in the original Broadway production.

Several notable TV and Film celebrities eventually joined the cast on Broadway and abroad including Jo Anne Worley, Cindy Williams, Bob Sagat, John Glover, Elaine Paige, Carson Kressley and Geoffrey Rush.

There is no musical from the 20s called The Drowsy Chaperone, nor exist composers Gable & Styne. The Morosco Theatre, however, did exist in the heart of the theatre district in New York and opened in 1917. It is now the Marriot Marquis Hotel and Theatre, where The Drowsy Chaperone opened on Broadway in 2006.

Drowsy’s own Man in the Chair, Robert Moss was the founder of New York City’s esteemed Off-Broadway Playwrights Horizons nearly 40 years ago. One of its theatres has been christened The Robert Moss Theater in his honor.

His most recent appearances were on the Hangar stage in Ithaca, serving playwrights as disparate as Bertold Brecht, Neil Simon and his beloved Wendy Wasserstein. It’s all joyous.
