The challenge: FTTH in MDUExtending a Fiber to the Home deployment into Multiple Dwelling Units (MDUs) is a challenge many operators face when deploying an all-fiber network. Deploying fiber to the MDU building is no different from standalone single-family dwellings or small businesses, but distributing the service inside the building to multiple tenants can be very difficult or even impossible in many structures. The following overview will illustrate options for deploying FTTH services inside MDUs and compare them in terms of service delivery capabilities, bandwidth, cost, and complexity.

Rewiring: A Simple Idea but Complex in PracticeThe most straightforward option is to simply rewire the MDU building. By running fiber to each unit, the operator can logically treat each unit the same as a standalone single family dwelling, with an ONT at each subscriber providing voice, data, and video services. If installation crews experienced in fiber deployment are in short supply, the marketplace is full of providers with extensive experience in enterprise structured copper wiring. Rewiring with Category 5 or better copper cabling will allow placement of a multi-user MDU ONT at the building demarc location and service distribution over copper with analog POTS from the ONT and Gigabit Ethernet for data and video, at least where deployment distances are 100 meters or less.

Realistically, however, rewiring is rarely an option. It is a very expensive and disruptive undertaking and in some cases may not even be possible. Few building owners will submit to a labor-saving but aesthetically unpleasant strategy like running wiring to every unit across the outside of the building. Wiring inside the building is

likely to be poorly structured and inaccessible, especially in older buildings. Multiple Cat5 runs are required to each unit to provide the necessary 4 pairs for 1000Base-T and additional pairs for voice.

Leverage Existing In-Building Wiring with Ultra Broadband EthernetADTRAN’s new Ultra Broadband Ethernet architecture is a compelling option for extending FTTH to MDUs. It combines the bandwidth, simplicity, and instant-on connection of Ethernet with the wiring flexibility and single-pair operation of DSL to create the ideal technology for distributing FTTH services to individual units. The Ethernet-based copper technology is instant-on, low latency, and delivers symmetric 100 Mbps service on a single pair up to 300 feet of standard voice-grade twisted pair cable in shared cable or up to 500 feet in dedicated drop cable. Since Ethernet is used for distribution instead of DSL, the cost and power consumption are significantly reduced. An 8-port ONU can be powered over the drop pair by a single subscriber, eliminating the need for the carrier to provision or arrange access to local utility power at the ONU location. The UBE-to-Ethernet media converter in the subscriber’s living unit provides safe, low-voltage DC power to the ONU over the same pair that delivers the 100 Mbps UBE signal. This media converter and power delivery function can also be integrated into a full residential gateway for a single-box voice/video/wired/wireless data solution. The UBE ONU’s ability to work in both Active Ethernet and GPON FTTH networks provides the flexibility to provide dedicated bandwidth for premium services over 1Gbps Active Ethernet or enjoy the cost savings and easy expandability of a GPON network.

Leverage Existing In-Building Wiring with DSLA far simpler and more cost-effective approach, then, is to reuse the existing in-building wiring for service distribution from the fiber-fed node at the demarc. The traditional approach for in-building copper distribution is a DSL technology like ADSL2+ or, more recently, VDSL2. These technologies are designed to operate in a high-density deployment with many active pairs in a shared cable, and their performance characteristics and installation procedures are well-known to many operators.

Comparing the Options: Service Delivery and bandwidthBoth fiber and Category 5/5e/6 copper wiring can support Gigabit services. VDSL2 is also a capable technology but with some limitations, delivering 50+ Mbps over most short-loop wiring but startup time and service interruptions are costly with a 30 to 60 second training time before the loop is ready to pass data. UBE supports 100 Mbps (with plans to scale to 250 Mbps and later 1Gbps) with the instant-on simplicity and microsecond latency of Ethernet. 200 Mbps can be supported over two pairs and the technology roadmap leads to 200 and 250 Mbps single-pair operation in 2013. VDSL2 does have the advantage of being able to run over the same pair as POTS, but nearly all MDUs have enough pairs to run POTS separately, and derived voice at the CPE can be used to deliver an all-VoIP service with advanced features.

Cost and ComplexityFiber and structured copper wiring are inexpensive, but labor makes up the vast majority of the initial cost of these options. By reusing the inside wiring, VDSL2 and UBE will have significantly lower total cost even after including the up-front equipment cost. Powering cost and complexity should not be overlooked when considering the total capital and operating expense of equipment located at the MDU building. The power consumption of VDSL2 solutions requires local or span powering, and both options are problematic. Local AC power is often unavailable in the locations where the equipment needs to be installed. Some carriers have installed equipment that is powered from an individual tenant’s unit in exchange for discounted service, but this is still problematic as tenants move in and out of

Page 7: Multi-Dwelling Unit Solutions - ADTRANpages.adtran.com/ImgHost/462/8290/CN_downloads/CN190_MDUs... · Multi-Dwelling Unit Solutions . MDU Solutions: Reinventing Access 2 ... ADTRAN

the powering unit. Span power from the central office is a reliable means of power delivery, but one of the advantages of moving to an all-fiber network is the cost savings from decommissioning and eliminating maintenance of the existing copper network, and these savings cannot be realized if the copper network is still required for equipment powering.

Fiber is the best method to handle existing and future bandwidth needs for residential and business services. However, UBE is the lowest total cost solution since it requires no new wiring and no provision for local or span powering of the MDU ONU equipment. Since the power consumption of a UBE port is less than one-quarter than that of a VDSL2 port, an additional option of reverse power from the subscriber is available. A maximum of 10W is sent from the CPE across the UBE pair to power the ONU. This reverse power complies with the same Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) specification that covers normal POTS battery voltage from the CO, so it is safe for standard residential wiring and requires no special handling precau-tions like high-voltage span power.

UBE for Cost-effective Rapid DeploymentUBE has a clear advantage in deploying FTTH services in MDUs when cost, ease of installation, service delivery capability, and bandwidth are all considered. The table below summarizes each of the options and how they stack up.

The Broadband ChallengeOne of the key challenges facing service providers is providing triple-play services to residential customers in MDU environments. The deployment scenarios and challenges often differ between MDUs, making a “cookie-cutter” approach to deploying services very difficult.

There are many scenarios that may make delivering high-speed Internet (HSI) to each living unit difficult. Buildings may not be wired with CAT5 to each residence or business. Rewiring these buildings is often difficult or even cost-prohibitive, and can often depend on the owner’s willingness to allow the rewiring. Additionally, wiring closets may not have enough room to add additional telecommunication equipment or may not have access to the proper power feeds to support certain technologies. Even more challenges exist within the living unit where the inside wiring may not adequately support the services being delivered. These are just some of the challenges the service provider may encounter when delivering the services that the residents are demanding.

In areas where wiring may be a concern, either in the MDU as a whole or within the living unit itself, one possible solution would be to deploy a Wi-Fi architecture to deliver HSI to the residential customers. Given the capacity improvements offered by 802.11n Wi-Fi technologies, the relatively low-cost of 802.11n Wi-Fi Access Points (APs), and the widespread adoption of 802.11a/b/g/n clients in consumer electronics, license-free 802.11n Wi-Fi has emerged as the ideal technology to provide high-speed data access to the residential broadband user.

In addition, by having a comprehensive Wi-Fi solution, the service provider can also provide services to common areas within the MDU. Because of the ubiquitous nature of Wi-Fi in today’s world, having access around the MDU’s playground or pool areas will be an additional amenity for the residents.

The ADTRAN Bluesocket AdvantageADTRAN’s Bluesocket vWLAN is the only wireless LAN solution with control and management virtualized on software residing on a hypervisor or on an appliance. Rather than deploying hardware controllers to operate a wireless network, vWLAN enables the service provider to leverage virtualization and eliminate the constraints and costs of physical hardware controllers.

This architecture makes it the ideal architecture for building out highly-scalable MDU Wi-Fi networks for high-speed data access. The Bluesocket vWLAN technology provides an innovative ap-proach to the deployment of large-scale Wi-Fi networks, separating the control plane from the data plane, distributing the security functions to the edge of the network where they belong, and utilizing a cloud-based 802.11n controller that runs on VMware in a secure data center location and is capable of managing and enforcing security policies for thousands of remote APs. By taking

advantage of virtualization, the vWLAN solution provides unmatched scalability, flexibility, and high availability, all of which are key characteristics of carrier-grade Wi-Fi solutions.

As an industry leader in leveraging existing wired infrastructure with emerging wireless technology, ADTRAN’s integrated, highly efficient, virtual approach results in significant savings for the MDU deployment.

ADTRAN is focused on reducing costs while enhancing performance across the full solution, not only on up front deployment costs, but also on ongoing maintenance and energy costs. By deploying ADTRAN’s Bluesocket vWLAN solutions customers can expect a significant reduction in Total Cost of Ownership now and in the future.

Deployment ScenarioThe deployment scenario for residential MDUs is very similar to what is available today in hotels and resort complexes. Rather than the having the cost of providing Wi-Fi Access Points within every living unit, APs are instead deployed in hallways, breezeways, or other common areas where devices share access to the AP.

Control for the APs is provided by Bluesocket vWLAN. vWLAN can be deployed in a VM Ware environment in your data center, remotely managing MDU networks in the region, or around the country.

The Bluesocket access points include two 802.11n radios. With a Gigabit Ethernet port, these access points support 2 x 300 Mbps streams—delivering market leading coverage and throughput. The Bluesocket access points are fully functional with the power delivered by a single-port 802.3af PoE solution.

Leveraging ADTRAN’s technology leadership, the Bluesocket access points are engineered to support the requirements of high-speed wireless technologies, emerging bandwidth intensive applications and latency sensitive services such as voice and video.

Key Benefits of vWLAN Technology • Accelerated Wireless Performance ADTRAN’s innovative solution is architected

to scale from 1 to 1500 access points on vWLAN™ solution. As the number of wireless devices steadily increases, vWLAN makes it easy and efficient for the service provider to scale their wireless networks. The service provider can simply add additional access points and licenses to expand the footprint of their network.

Because the control of these APs is occurring in the Service Provider’s data center, no additional hardware is needed at the MDU besides the APs.

• Fast Roaming Capabilities Bluesocket vWLAN’s Layer 3 roaming and optimized packet routing creates a better user experience for the wireless user. vWLAN offers seamless roaming to anywhere in the network - Layer 2 or Layer 3. A sophisticated centralized control algorithm runs in the vWLAN appliance to guarantee sub-50ms roaming for applications like voice and video. Client’s security key material and role information is present in the roamed-to AP before the client arrives at the AP thus the client maintains their authentication state and IP address.

For the MDU resident, what this means is that she can maintain a persistent IP session (streaming video, placing a VoIP call, etc) as she walks from her apartment to the pool.

• Flexibility VWLAN provides a flexible solution that can operate in multiple deployments from a small MDUs to a large resort environment while offering low cost of ownership and optimal performance.

Each MDU can be managed from a single, centralized location within the Service Provider’s data center. Because Bluesocket vWLAN is a cloud-based platform, the cost associated with long-term maintenance and troubleshooting of the wireless network is greatly reduced.

• Delivering 100 Percent Uptime Bluesocket vWLAN’s guarantee of Zero Failover Time and Zero packet loss ensures your end-user’s services are never interrupted. High availability eliminates disruption to end users if a failover occurs. The distributed architecture ensures that in the case of interruption to the main server the users are still up and running locally.

Page 11: Multi-Dwelling Unit Solutions - ADTRANpages.adtran.com/ImgHost/462/8290/CN_downloads/CN190_MDUs... · Multi-Dwelling Unit Solutions . MDU Solutions: Reinventing Access 2 ... ADTRAN

• Scaling to additional users and software without infrastructure build-outs The Bluesocket vWLAN distributed architecture up to 300 Gbps of distributed throughput. Because the packet forwarding functionality is offloaded from the controller to the access point, the controller is free to now manage thousands of AP’s and 10s of thousands of users. This is ideal for the MDU solution. The data flow is from the wireless client to the Access Point to the network.

This allows for infinite data plane scalability. There is no central bottleneck at a controller, as in other centralized WLAN architectures. This also allows for user based VLANs at the edge, Layer 2 and 3 Mobility, QoS/CoS at the edge, and High Availability—the data still flows even when the connection to the appliance is lost.

• Protected data Identity-based QoS, Packet Prioritization and Fairness Algorithms are applied at the access point. Tightly integrated security modules offer robust and scalable NAC, Guest Access, AAA and WIDS capability.

In the MDU environment, this means that the service provider can provide secure, authenticated data access to the residential customers, but also provide guest access in common areas if desired. Traffice is separated, authenticated, and prioritized at the access point, ensuring that your customer’s data needs get the highest priority.

• Easily managed users Bluesocket vWLAN includes WLAN management software to provides a rich set of visual tools for analyzing and troubleshooting the wireless network. The integrated management solution includes location and heat maps, health summary, enhanced reporting, notifications, and summary of the overall RF environment.

User Security and ProfilesADTRAN’s vWLAN solution permits intelligent decisions at the edge. Bluesocket Access Points run a stateful firewall which can be configured to restrict or permit certain traffic. The firewall rules could be configured based on protocol type, source/destination IP or source/destination port. This can be done per user or per role. vWLAN supports class of service (CoS) at the edge, of which there are three main components: Packet Prioritization, Over the Air Fairness, and Packet Remarking.

vWLAN provides identity-based access control which removes restrictions that were part of traditional WLAN solutions and provides more flexibility in managing wireless access. Role based policy enforcement permits a granular level of control over what each user is allowed to do on the network.

Clients are placed in an unregistered role when first connected vWLAN. Only on successful authentication a Role will be assigned to a user Authorization is done via several techniques - either VLAN only or VLAN and Stateful Firewall combination. vWLAN implements intelligent VLAN capability at the AP, including the abillity to dynamically assign a user VLAN based on 802.1x, MacAuth or WebAuth credentials.

Once the system identifies the User, a profile for that specific user will be created and following parameters are associated with it.

• VLAN/Location via Role

• Firewall policy

• Bandwidth

• QoS/CoS

• Home Agent (HA)

• Airtime Fairness

• Security Parameters

High AvailabilityOptional high availability software for vWLAN is designed to provide hitless failover with zero packet loss to ensure uninterrupted wireless LAN service even during a control plane failover. The 1+1 high availability scheme, which does not require the addition of new hardware, is based on installing both a primary and secondary vWLAN software control instance which can be deployed anywhere as long as the Bluesocket access points and both control instances have network connectivity to each other. vWLAN offers unprecedented flexibility, since the control instances and access points can be located independent of each other—anywhere in the networked world.

Conclusion: Reinventing AccessReliable bandwidth is essential for multi-family tenants and business. They need all they can get. The prospect of building fiber broadband out to every single detached home in a wire center is costly compared to the economies of scale seen in the MDU. Network operators realize that bringing bandwidth to an apartment makes a better business case for deployment than trying to cover every single home in a wire center. In addition, much of the construction for MDUs can be done indoors and can be carried out in any season.

Fiber all the way to the end user is the preferred deployment method for MDUs. Fiber is future proof and costs less to maintain than the other alternatives. In spite of these advantages, taking fiber out to every building these days requires even more justification.
