Issue 7 2018 Term 3 Week 3

From the Principal - Ms Reeves

Welcome to Term 3

Term 3 is a particularly busy term. It is a term of endings and

a term of planning for new beginning for next year.

Year 12 students commenced their HSC trials this week. In

the weeks that follow, many of our Year 12 students have major works

and HSC practical exams. The term ends with their graduation and

formal. I know for many students, the planning and preparation for the

formal takes much thought and effort.

Year 11 students end the term with their Preliminary exams. The exams

are only six weeks away! In Term 4, Year 11 students commence their

HSC course work. Of course, there are some students who have been

accelerated and in Year 11 will be sitting the HSC exams.

The subject selection process for Year 10 into 11 and Year 8 into 9 has

commenced, with parent-teacher evening last term and the subject

information evening in Week 2. Year 8 selections were due in Week 2

and Year 10 are due Thursday 9 August.

Given the range of courses and patterns of study in Senior years, we

have given intensive support for students so they can make choices

that maximise their post school options. Prior to making selections, all of

Year 10 are individually interviewed by the Careers Advisor, Year

Advisor, Deputy Principal or Head Teacher Senior Studies. This is a

massive task, to which the teachers give up much of their time. I thank

Mrs Scott, Mr Wilcox, Mr Jankovics and Mr Finley for giving their time to

help our students make the best possible choices. Students then take

part in “subject samplers”, where they select senior subjects for a trial

lesson. The final part of our subject selection process for Year 10

students is an individual interview for each student with his/her parent.

The interviews will be held on Friday 17 August. in the library. Again, this is an

enormous task but one we feel is beneficial for students and families.

By the middle of this term curriculum pattern in 2019 will be established so that our

Timetable Team, led by Mr Finley, can construct a timetable for all students and

teachers.

Refurbishments

Classes have commenced in two of our refurbished Science laboratories. The labs

are bright, light and open; providing a great learning environment. They also have

a new fume cabinet which is necessary for some experiments.

The new administration foyer is open for parent and student use. We have a fresh

public entrance, however there is still a bit of work to do to complete the

renovations in A Block. These should be finished by the end of term.

Recognition Awards

At the end of Terms 1and 2, we hold assembles for students in Years 7 to 12 who

have demonstrated the core values of the school both inside and outside of the

classroom. Term 2 winners are published in this issue.

MADD – A night not to miss

Our annual showcase of music, art, dance and drama is on again at Parramatta

Riverside Theatre on Monday 31 August. For an exciting night of entertainment, it is

not to be missed.

Swimming Success

Luke Garment Year 9 has been in Hobart competing at Australian

School Swimming Championships. Luke finished with Gold in the

4 x 50 freestyle relay; Silver in 50m Butterfly, 50m Freestyle and the

4 x 50 medley relay; and bronze in the 100m butterfly. On the final

day of swimming, he also volunteered to swim in one of the

Northern Territory relay teams as the NT did not have enough

swimmers to form some relay teams. Fantastic sportsmanship and

absolutely brilliant results!

Sydney Water Refill Station

You may remember last year, one of our Year 7 English classes won a water refill

station and were second in the ad competition in the state. 7G’s English teacher,

Ms Cole, entered her class in Sydney Water’s Brand without a Bottle Competition.

The competition enabled the students to engage in an authentic learning

opportunity. Students had to write the script for an advertisement that had an

emphasis on persuasive language, which would convince consumers to drink tap

water rather than bottled water. Our students’ script and storyboard were

shortlisted. Together with the opportunity to film the ad, they won a water refill

station. The water refill station is in constant use, and is robust enough to stand up to

constant use by teenagers.

Ms Cole has repeated her success. This year, 7G had the opportunity to spend the

day filming the commercial for which three of the class wrote the storyboard and

script. Congratulations to Rachael Dunk, Gabriella Greco and Isabel Redoblado

Being shortlisted wins another water refill station for Muirfield, which will be installed

later in the year. When it comes time to vote, we will email and ask for your support

Upcoming Concert Band Tour – North Coast & Dreamworld

Interested in joining this tour?

September 28 to October 2, 2018.

Leaving last day of term, returning on first Tuesday of the school holidays

On the last day of this term, the Muirfield Concert Band will be departing on its third

bi-annual band tour. This year students will be travelling up the Pacific Motorway via

Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Grafton before arriving on the Gold Coast where

they will perform at Dreamworld theme park.

This 5 day, 4 night tour is not only limited to current Concert Band members. If your

child plays (or used to play) a Concert Band instrument and would like to join us we

would love to have them along. There is still plenty of time to begin attending

rehearsals and learn the parts!

Page 6: MUIRFIELD HIGH SCHOOL Muirfield Matters Term 3 Week 3...Students had to write the script for an advertisement that had an emphasis on persuasive language, which would convince consumers

We are also offering limited places to other students who may wish to join us as:

*Public Speakers (to MC our school and community concerts. This would suit senior

students/school leaders who are confident in speaking in front of groups.)

*Video/photography crew

*Web/social media team

*Dance and/or Drama – to perform a combined item with the concert band

Permission notes to Band members will be sent home shortly. Please contact

Muirfield Band Director, Mr Steven Lavis at [email protected] if your

child has not received on. If you are interested in one of the additional non-musician

positions, email Mr Lavis for details or speak with Ms Reeves or Ms Frame.

Year 7 went to Featherdale Wildlife Park as a part of our Science topic Cells and

Classification on Tuesday 26th June. All students who went on this excursion had

a great time. We looked at all the animals, patted them and learnt about how

and why we classify animals.

We saw many animals at the zoo, all to help us

learn about how to classify them. Some of the

animals we saw were dingos, wallabies,

crocodiles, snakes, and echidnas.

To learn more on the topic classification, we

went to the learning centre in the park to look, pat and learn about the different

animals and to learn a bit more about how we classify them.

First, we were shown a shingle back lizard (also known as a two-headed lizard).

The educator told us some interesting facts about the shingle back lizard like why

it is sometimes called the two-headed lizard. She came around with the lizard

and we could touch him if we wanted to as well.

Next, it was time to meet the Children's

python. The amazing and the cuddliest one

out of the three was the all-important koala.

Touching him was a once in a lifetime

opportunity due to most other wildlife parks

and zoos not allowing koalas to be picked up

or patted. His fur felt like sheep wool but softer.

Time flies when you are having fun! Before we knew it, the day had gone and it

was time to hop back on the buses and back to school. That was a great day.

Year 11 First Aid Course

On Friday July 27th, forty four of our Year 11

Sport Coaching and PDHPE students attended

the Provide First Aid Course run by the Australian

Surf Lifesaving Academy of New South Wales.

The course was very well received by all

students, thanks in large part to the highly

informative and engaging presenters. The

course compliments Sports Coaching

competencies and the PDHPE syllabus and

provides students with a nationally recognised

certificate in first aid that they can use in their

current or future work places.

All students participated to the best of their

ability and enjoyed the unique experience this

course offers.

Muirfield High is coming to the catwalk!

We are planning an exciting fundraiser for 2019. We are looking at hosting a fashion

show to celebrate mothers and daughters, coinciding with Mother’s Day 2019.

If you would like to help us arrange this exciting event, please contact us on

[email protected]. This is not something that we have hosted before, so

we invite help and suggestions from our school community.

The idea of this event is more about community than about how much money we

raise. We hope it will be an opportunity to make new friends, celebrate the amazing

women in our community and if we raise some money to buy much needed

resources for our school, it will be an added bonus.

If you have some experience in this area and would like to co-ordinate this event or

help get us off the ground, we would to hear from you.

PARENT AND CAREGIVERS PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE INTO THE SCHOOL

GROUNDS

In the interests of student safety, parents and caregivers are not permitted to drive onto school grounds at any time, including before

or after school, to drop off or collect students, or to

attend meetings with staff.

There are deliveries and staff accessing the car

park at different times during the day and the

access is very narrow.

The only exceptions to this is when either you or your passenger has

a disability or if you are picking up a sick or injured student.

STUDENT SAFETY IS UP TO ALL OF US

Parramatta Boys AAL Squadron is enrolling for Term 3

2018 We are writing to let you know that the Parramatta Boys Squadron of the Australian Air League has is

enrolling cadets for Term 2 2018 at its meeting location at LOT 1 Edison Parade, Winston Hills NSW

2153 on Tuesday evenings from 7:15 until 9:15pm.

The Parramatta Boys Squadron is one of the oldest Squadrons in the Australian Air League, forming in

1935 and for many years met in their hall at Jubilee Park, Parramatta. Unfortunately, progress took its toll

and the hall that the Squadron had met in since the 1940s will soon be redeveloped, so the Squadron has

taken the opportunity to move into a new area at Winston Hills.

The Air League is inviting young people, who may be interested, to come down with their parents and learn

what the Air League has to offer. The Australian Air League is a nationwide organisation for young people

aged from 8 to 18 years. Staffed by volunteers and self-funding, it teaches leadership skills and provides a

wide range of interesting and exciting activities such as camping and hiking, sport and physical recreation,

building and flying model aircraft and ceremonial drill. Through classes and practical demonstration

members learn the theory of aviation and a wide range of associated topics such as Meteorology,

Navigation, Aero Engines and Aircraft Construction, as well as general interest subjects such as

photography, field craft and community service.

The Air League also provides a range of flying experiences for its members, from simple scenic joy flights

through to gliding and powered-flying training, from private pilot licence (PPL) through to airline entry

standards – all in aircraft owned, operated and professionally maintained by our staff.

Running a strong program that is both fun and educational, the Australian Air League is making fine

citizens out of young Australians. Currently there are also a number of other Squadrons in Western Sydney

including Penrith, Richmond, and Blacktown as well as Squadrons at Epping and Ryde.

Girls with an interest in aviation may also contact the Blacktown Girls Squadron via our 1800 number

below.
