  • 1. INTRODUCTION

    1.1 The University

    The Mehran University is a distinctive, pioneering andconnected university that shapes the future througheducating and empowering people to meet the realchallenges of tomorrow.

    Industrial and technological development in Pakistan hasbeen quite rapid since its independence and particularlyduring the sixties and seventies. The main fields ofdevelopment have been related to the enhancement ofagriculture, establishment and up-gradation of industriesand exploration of its indigenous resources. Thisdevelopment has resulted in increased demand forqualified engineers in different fields in addition to otherprofessionals. In order to meet this demand and to providean opportunity of engineering education to the peoplehailing from the interior of Sindh Province, SindhUniversity Engineering College was established in 1963as a constituent college of University of Sindh in Jamshoroabout 15 km. from Hyderabad on the right bank of riverIndus.

    The Education Policy of 1972 provided for up-gradationof the Sindh University Engineering College to the levelof a University of Engineering and Technology.Accordingly, the college was first declared as an additionalcampus of the University of Sindh in July 1976 and laterupgraded to the level of a full-fledged independentUniversity on 1st March, 1977 named as MehranUniversity of Engineering and Technology (MehranUET).Mehran UET is one of the most engaged, supportive andresponsive universities in Pakistan which focuses on

    making higher education and research accessible andrelevant to all people of Pakistan in general and Sindh inparticular. The University has continued to put in effortsto address community engagement opportunities, financialsustainability and growth, improvement in teaching andlearning and research excellence, program up gradationand expansion into new discipline areas. Mehran UETbelieves that this scrutiny is an opportunity to providethe public with a confirmation of high standards inacademic quality and student centered and holisticapproach to education.   • 2.1 DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE

    2.1.1 The Department

    The complexity of modern buildings calls for the effectivecombination of skill and talent in the best interest ofArchitecture & Environment. The Department ofArchitecture offers a comprehensive curriculum in amodern field that encompasses City Planning includesenvironmental consideration for both urban and sub-urban setting. Studies in Architecture are related to designand construction of houses and other building typeskeeping in view the appearance, comfort, and usability,optimization between expenditure, facilities andenvironmental friendliness.

    The Department of Architecture offers a full-time five-year course leading to the degree of "Bachelor ofArchitecture (B.Arch.)". The syllabus of the subjects isdesigned in such a way to acquaint the students with

    basic planning, aesthetics, design and drawing of plansand specification of various buildings. At the same time,some subjects concerning the basic Architectural designincluding Computer Aided Design (CAD) and socio-economic design are also included in the curriculum.Teachings through lectures in the class rooms areadequately supported by studios and laboratory work.

    2.2.1 The Department

    Civil Engineering is the process of directing andcontrolling natural resources for the use and benefit ofhuman kind through construction of various structures.It applies engineering practices to the planning, design,construction, operation and maintenance of structuressuch as buildings, roads, bridges, railways, factories,airports, irrigation schemes, docks, harbors, dams, floodcontrol systems, water supply, sewerage disposal schemes

    etc. Thus, civil engineering is the largest and broadestdiscipline of engineering.

    The Department of Civil Engineering of the Universityprovides essential and advance engineering educationaccording to the requirements of field. The various fieldsof specialization are introduced to the final year studentsby assigning them a thesis project. The thesis projectsmay be specific to a particular branch of Civil Engineeringlike Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering,Construction Management etc.

    Environmental Engineering, Construction Engineering& Management etc. Theory classes of different subjectsare complemented by tutorials and laboratory works, forwhich adequate facilities with equipment have beenestablished. In addition, the students are taken to fieldvisits of the Civil Engineering projects such as waterdistribution structures, bridge & building structures, roadconstruction works, geotechnical works etc. During thesummer vacations the students are also sent on variousCivil Engineering projects for internship. This is to exposethem to practical engineering practices being actuallyimplemented.

    The Department also offers postgraduate courses leadingto degrees such as Post-Graduate Diploma (P.G.D.),Master of Engineering (ME.), Master of Philosophy(M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in thefollowing fields.

  • In order to meet the ever-increasing demand for qualifiedplanners, to provide better and pollution-free livingenvironment to the people, to ensure planned growth,and to control and guide future planning activities inurban and rural areas of the country, a full-time four-year course is offered in the field of City and RegionalPlanning.

    Keeping in view the baseline curriculum prepared by theNational Curriculum Revision Committee constituted bythe Higher Education Commission (HEC), the curriculumwas revised and updated for 13-Batch and onwards, tobring it in line with local, national and internationalrequirements and to introduce innovation to ensure qualityof education and uniformity of curriculum in the Pakistaniuniversities, which is also in accordance with therecommendations of the Pakistan Council of Architectsand Town Planners (PCATP).The curriculum is designed in such a way that it involvesa wide spectrum of activities regarding the preparationof master plans and development plans for villages, towns,cities, and regions. To provide the practical knowledge,the study visits of different towns and cities are conductedto collect the primary data about the physical, social andeconomic aspects of housing, infrastructure, traffic andtransportation, slums and katchi-abadies, etc. It alsoinvolves analysis, preparation and implementation ofproposed policies, programs and plans for improvement

    of old urban areas and development of new settlementsat both urban and regional levels.

    On successful completion of the entire requirement forthe degree, the students will be awarded the degree ofBachelor of City and Regional Planning (B.CRP).The department also offers the degree of M.CRP. Threebatches are admitted in year 2011, 2012 & 2013respectively further admissions for 2014 is in process.The department also offers the degrees of Master ofPhilosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) inthe field of City and Regional Planning. The Institute ofEnvironmental Engineering & Management (IEEM) hasbeen established with the aim creating new knowledgeand finding innovative solutions to local and globalenvironmental issues through application of suchknowledge. There is lot of hue and cry for control of thepollution in the urban and rural areas, oceans, rivers and

    agriculture lands. Today, Pakistan stands on the thresholdof implementing environmental standards. EnvironmentalProtection Agencies (EPAs) of the five provinces andfederal government have assigned task to implementenvironmental standards and therefore, there will be greatneed for large number of qualified experts in the field ofEnvironmental Engineering. The scope of EnvironmentalEngineer goes beyond the community and regional levelsto global level.

    The Bachelor of Engineering (BE) program is based onsound theoretical knowledge and through the practicaltraining supported by field practical and industrial training.

    3.2.1 The Department

    Department of Computer Systems Engineering is adiscipline that integrates fields of Electrical Engineeringand Computer Science required developing ComputerSystems. Computer Engineers usually have training inElectronic Engineering, software design, and hardware-software integration instead of only Software Engineeringor Electronic Engineering. Computer Engineers areinvolved in many hardware and software aspects ofcomputing, from the circuit design of individual

    microprocessors, personal computers, and supercomputers,to latest development of communication system andnetworks. Therefore, this field of engineering not onlyfocuses on how computer systems work, but also howthey integrate into the larger picture.

    Usual tasks involving Computer Engineers include writingsoftware and firmware for embedded microcontrollers,designing analogue sensors, designing mixed signal circuitboards, and designing operating systems.     Software Engineering is at the core of InformationTechnology and the increasing need for computers in thedaily life of people has made it imperative that newdesigns and new computer software systems be developedso that advancing technology can be applied in a growingrange of applications. The work assigned to people whoare called software engineers evolves very fast, whichreflects the changes in technology as well as the increaseof new specializations which keep cropping up in thisfield along with the preferences and practices of employers.The principles and knowledge of computer science,

    engineering, and mathematical analysis are employed bycomputer software engineers for designing, developing,testing, and evaluating the software and the systems thatcomputers use to carry out various applications. Oursoftware engineering program is a collection of disciplinesresponsible for designing, developing, testing anddeploying software systems. Graduates of B.E. SoftwareEngineering have recruitment opportunities in thefollowing national/multinational organizations such as;Software Houses, Banks, NADRA, PIA, PTCL, OGDCL,SSGC, WAPDA, SPARCO.

  • 3.6 Department of Telecommunication Engineering

    3.6.1 The Department

    Mehran university of Engineering and technology hasgot the privilege to establish the TelecommunicationDepartment for the first time in the history of all Publicand Private sector universities of Pakistan. Keeping inview the tremendous growth of Telecom Sector, there isgreat scope and consumption of Telecom Engineers,Experts and Solution Providers; therefore in year 2001MUET started the program to produce graduatesexclusively in Telecommunication Engineering bybifurcating the Electronic Department. The departmentwould like to augment its existing programs to producethe high quality Telecom Personnel in various specializedareas such as Mobile and Wireless Communication,Terrestrial Satellite Communication, Multimedia &

    Networking under the establishment of Institute ofCommunication Technologies (ICT). HEC has alreadyselected MUET as an ICT hub.
