Play Lotería (Mexican Bingo) with local celebrity callers and be the first to purchase items from our specialty folk art vendors.
Muertitos Fest Fiesta
Feast on Mexican regional delicacies and enjoy live music as you preview the artisan work and altars.
Evening Performances:Lariza - This talented Latin vocalist is a veteran of the Latin Music and Tejano world. Her latest single, “En Mi Soledad” led to her recent nomination for “Best New Female Artist” at the 2010 Tejano Music Awards.
Nicolas Valdez and Vincent Valdez - These two San Antonio born multi-disciplinary artists have had their works featured through out the country to critical acclaim. Together they have collaborated to created a new multi-media piece incorporating music, media, poetry and performance that will explore the Soul of San Anto.
Trio Azul: Azul, Bett Butler, Joel Dilley - United by a common love for traditional and not-so-traditional music from around the world, Trio Azul fuses backgrounds and languages, women’s voices, and a variety of instruments adding up to an elegant, passionate, and unique experience. In this concierto, Trio Azul will play homage to San Antonio’s unique musical traditions, melding Westside & Eastside influences of blues and jazz with Afro-Mexican music.
Muertitos Fest First FridayFriday, Nov. 5, 2010, 6 to 10 pmFREE and open to the public
The festivities continue with a Día de los Muertos First Friday Celebration. Enjoy the exhibits, altars, two stages of live musical and dance performances, festive food and artisan booths, and a Day of the Dead Procession.
Friday Night Performance Highlights Chucho Perales and Friends - Local strings virtuoso and San Antonio Conjunto legend Chucho Perales brings his vintage San Anto Conjunto sound to the outdoor stage.
San Antonio Parks and Recreation Folklorico Dancers celebrate the roots of Mexican Dance traditions.
SAY Si’s Teatro ALAS Youth Theatre Program premiers an all new original stage production that celebrates family, culture and Día de Los Muertos.
The Night concludes with a traditional Día de Los Muertos Procession led by the SAY Sí Students!

Muertitos Fest Exhibits:Fine Art Exhibit • November 4th - 27th
Kathy SosaIn 2007 Sosa began to explore the artistic expression of mestisaje, the blending of peoples, races, ethnicities, languages, ideas, habits and cultures that characterizes the Texas-Mexico border region that has been her home since childhood. Her Tree of Life series re-interprets the traditional folk art form, the 3-dimensional Tree of Life, into 2-dimensions, adding a contemporary edge.
Laura SchultzLaura D. Schultz is a visual artist who works in cut paper, creating delicate, architectural-scale installations as well as works of a more intimate size. Her pieces exude both power and fragility, a contradiction she finds intriguing and actively cultivates. The images hearken back to mythology and legend, yet often include many personal symbols from memories and dreams.
Jorge GarzaJorge Garza is a well-known San Antonio artist. The rhythmic and powerful forces of nature, as well as personal spiritual reflection, are the experiences that guide Jorge’s art. As a visual artist he creates assemblages. The direction his art has taken has emerged from his Hispanic background, Catholic upbringing and extensive travel. In his assemblages he uses found objects, religious articles such as milagros, antique crucifixes and retablos, as well as hand cut metal shapes. These are combined with painted surfaces that are textured and layered with many coats of acrylic paint utilizing the colors of Mexico and the Southwest. The assemblages are two and three-dimensional symbolic statements.
Paula CoxPaula Cox is a visual artist who works in printmaking, paperworking and book arts. Her work is a playful mix of color, pattern, shape and texture. Linoleum relief prints, shredded paper mixed with pulp, pulp painting and letterpress are all used.
FOLK ART of MexicoA Selection of Folk Art from the Collection of Margie Shackelford & Alex Caragonne November 4th - 27th
Spanning over 38 years of collecting, Margie and Alex have one of the foremost collections of Mexican Folk Art in the country. Through their generosity, the San Antonio community will get a chance to glimpse this immpressive selection of Mexican Folk Art.
A Retrospective and OfrendaJorge Rosano, 1955-2010November 4th - 27th
Jorge and his family first came to San Antonio in 2000. He had an exhibit at SAY Sí and conducted community workshops. Two more trips through the years resulted in additional exhibits and workshops.
Join us as we celebrate his life and art and pay tribute tohis amazing talents.
Acclaimed papel picado artist, Jorge Rosano, was born in Mexico City in 1955. Rosano’s art education took place in the recognized Escuela de Pintura y Escultura in Mexico City, The Accademia Di Belle Arti in Italy, and the Albert Museum in England.
Paul Strand: Mexico PortfolioNovember 4th - 27thThis exhibition will feature twenty gravure plates from Strand’s 1967 reissue of The Mexican Portfolio from the provate collection of Susan Toomey Frost.
Paul Strand (born 1890, New York; died 1976, Orgeval, France) was one of the great photographers of the twentieth century. After World War II, Strand traveled around the world—from New England to Ghana, France to the Outer Hebrides,to photograph and in the process created a dynamic and significant body of work. This suite is a unique and important photographic portrait of Mexico at a critical point in its history by one of the great modern masters of photography.
