Documentary films are our eye-openers to the world. Where better to look for informa-tion? Whether you call it a “creative treat-ment of actuality”(Grierson) or “life caught unawares” ”(Vertov), documentaries have the power to make a lasting impact.

I am proud to present our 4th Erasmus International Documentary Film Festival. Make sure you don’t miss the excellent films. We have various categories of documenta-ries, e.g. about music and musicians (about Björk, James Brown, The Rolling Stones, The Scorpions), about directors like Woody Allen and the making of James Bond films. We will also show famous awarded documentaries, like “Of Men and War” (IDFA). A particular highlight is our live musical accompaniment to a historical documentary. Be sure not to miss that!

For me journalists and documentary film makers are the ‘conscience’ of a democracy. They reflect society, they ask the critical questions and they investigate important matters. In 1971, after the breakup of the Beatles, John Lennon and Yoko Ono moved to New York City, where Lennon sought to escape the mayhem of the Beatles era and focus on his private life. At the same time, he created some of the most acclaimed songs of his career, most of them written at his apartment at The Dakota in Manhattan, including “Mind Games”, “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night”, “I’m Losing You” and “Woman”.

After being forced out of the UK in 1971 for tax reasons and a fall out with their manager, the Stones go to France to work on “Exile on Main St.” (1972). A recording truck is set up next to a rented villa. The band records in the basement while upstairs, the heroin, bourbon and visitors are all over. The Stones and other musicians, plus archive footage and photos, re-create the Sixties era of rock and excess.

Setelah dipaksa keluar dari Inggris pada ta-hun 1971 karena alasan pajak dan berselisih dengan manager mereka, Rolling Stones pindah ke Perancis untuk merekam “Exile on Main St.” (1972). Rafea is an uneducated Bedouin mother of 4 from the Jordanian desert. She gets the chance to go to the Barefoot College in India, where women from poor communities are trained to become solar engineers. If Rafea succeeds she will be able to bring power to her village. Will she find support for her new venture? Will she be able to re-wire the traditional minds of the Bedouin community that stand in her way?

In 2008, director Marina Zenovich’s Emmy Award winning film “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired” detailed how Polanski couldn’t get a fair trial, prompting him to flee the USA.

When Polanski was arrested at the Zurich Film Festival in Switzerland in 2009 and threatened with extradition to the USA, Zenovich felt she was partly to blame.

Her new film revisits this controversial case from several new angles.

Dalam film “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired” yang memenangkan Emmy Award, sutradara Marina Zenovich menjelaskan bagaimana Polanski tidak mendapatkan per-sidangan yang adil, sehingga harus mening-galkan Amerika Serikat. Woody Allen allowed his life and creative process to be documented on-camera for the first time.

Robert Weide followed the notoriously private film legend over a year and a half to create the ultimate film biography.

The film chronicles Allen’s career - from teen writer to TV scribe for Sid Caeser, from standup comedian to award-winning writer-director averaging one film-per-year for more than 40 years.

Woody Allen mengizinkan kehidupan dan proses kreatifnya didokumentasikan di depan kamera untuk pertama kalinya. Robert Weide mengikuti legenda film terk-enal ini lebih dari satu tahun setengah untuk merekam film biografinya.
