HE treated him like a brother. ButLungephi Ngeshweni paid this friend-ship back by raping and murderingThembekile Nqanqali’s teenagedaughter.

Last week the Willowvale RegionalCourt sentenced Ngeshweni (48) to lifeimprisonment for the rape and mur-der of Dorcas Nqanqali. He was alsosentenced to four years for kidnap-ping the 14-year-old girl.

“I am very happy with the sentencebecause that is what I was lookingfor,” Nqanqali said.

But it’s hard to find peace. “Myheart is still bleeding for what he did,”he added.

Ngeshweni was one of the Nqanqa-li’s neighbours.

“I met him last year. He told meabout his problems which led me totry my utmost to get him a job in But-terworth as a security guard.

“I was very shocked when I re-ceived a call from my wife saying that

he had kidnapped and murdered mydaughter,” Nqanqali said.

Dorcas and her younger brotherLudwe (9) were lured away by Ngesh-weni from their home on July 18 lastyear. He told them that he was on hisway to their mother and asked themto accompany him.

Unbeknownst to the two childrenthey were in the company of a paroledrapist. He had raped someone in 2003while he was on parole for anotherrape committed earlier.

On their way, supposedly to meetthe children’s mother, Ngeshwenichased Ludwe home. He then startedto assault Dorcas and dragged her toa nearby forest where he raped and

to find her. We went to Ngeshweni’shomestead and found his wife asleep. We asked her about his whereaboutsbut she also did not know where hewas.

“We informed the police about theincident. They came to look for mydaughter but we found nothing. Iwent back home thinking that mychild would come back. I had hopedthat I would see her again - but wefound her body the next day dumpedamong the rocks,” Nosapho recalled.

She also said that even thoughNgeshweni received a tough sentenceshe was afraid that he would try to es-cape and that she would be his nextvictim.

PROJECT Isizwe, in partnership withSES, a world-leading satellite operatorwith a fleet of over 50 geostationary satel-lites, launched a free WiFi project in Lus-ikisiki andMount Frere last week that willempower the youth in the area by givingthem free access to information and educa-tion.

The aim of Project Isizwe is to bring freeWiFi to public spaces in low-income com-munities in South Africa and connect peo-ple for education, economic developmentand social inclusion. The Eastern Capelaunch followed on the success of theTshwane network that was launched onNovember 2013 and had since grown toover 660 000 users at over 575 sites.“As we are celebrating Youth Month

during June, it is important to rememberhow important it is for the youth in SouthAfrica and especially those in rural areas,to connect with the world for training andlearning purposes. By opening the doorsto the world through giving them free ac-cess to the Internet, we are giving them op-portunities to become employable and con-tribute to the economic development of theprovince,” said Zahir Khan, Chief Opera-tions Officer of Project Isizwe.“Youth unemployment figures are very

high in SouthAfrica and specifically in therural areas, due to lack of education andtraining. The best and quickest way to findinformation about education and trainingis the Internet. We are excited to be in-volved in another free WiFi project thatwill enable rural communities to con-nect.”Project Isizwe partnered with SES to

bring free WiFi to the Eastern Cape.Ibrahima Guimba-Saidou, Senior Vice-

President, SES Commercial in Africa, said: “Satellite is the key element to ena-bling this service to the unconnected be-cause of its extensive coverage. Also, building fibre or wireless backhaul infra-structure to connect unserved areas likeLusikisiki is very capital intensive, whichis why the satellite link is so competitive.SES has the global infrastructure in placeto rapidly deploy these kinds of servicesand this is the reason SES could assistProject Isizwe so quickly to achieve theirgoals.”The free WiFi at the Ingwe TVET Col-

lege’sMount Frere and Lusikisiki campus-es makes it possible for the Department ofEducation to deliver internet access oncampus and surrounding areas. The ruralarea provided an ideal place to test the sys-tem. The Eastern Cape was also ideal be-cause it is as rural as you can get, but alsodensely populated.“We believe until we could solve the con-

nectivity problem there, connectivitywould always be a problem,” Khan said.

The lucky winner of a C-Class Mercedes-Benzwas Sanette Jonker, fromPort Elizabeth.

There were also big crowds for the thirdWin-a-Merc draw at Cleary Park in Port Eliza-beth, with big cheers greeting the news thatJoy Petersen had won the glitzy car.

In East London Zibula Nosisa was over-come with joy when she was announced win-ner of the Mercedes-Benz.

It’s the second Mercedes Benz to be givenaway at the Bingo Royale in the East Londontown centre.

In Mthatha it was a different story, how-ever, with a man, Elrico Graham, winning thedraw at Ritz Bingo Mthatha last weekend.

It’s also been a quarter of big wins at the

Bingo Royale outlets in the Eastern Cape.Players in East London have won two of the

biggest Bingo jackpots ever paid out in theEastern Cape.

On May 25 a player who wishes to remainanonymous won R144 081.93 in the progres-sive jackpot from machine number 50101.

FORD has recently launched its Tourneo Con-nectMPV range in SouthAfrica, offering an al-ternative to people who want the space andpracticality of a big SUV, but cannot afford abig price tag.

The Tourneo is the people-carrying versionof the Transit Connect – Ford’s panel van –which was the 2014 international van of theyear in Europe.Available in both five- and seven-seater ver-

sions, it is aimed at buyers whowould like car-like comfort and safety features in amulti-pur-pose vehicle with the practicality of a minibusto carry people and goods with ease. The Tourneo Connect is available in four

models, withthreeenginechoices, threespecifi-cation levels (Ambiente, Trend and Titanium)and two wheelbase configurations. Only theAmbiente and Trend use the short-wheelbase(SWB) five-seater platform, while the Titaniumderivatives are based on the long-wheelbase(LWB)GrandTourneoConnect layout in eitherstandard five-seat configuration or optionalseven-seat form.It offers advanced fuel-saving technologies in

its 1.0 Ecoboost in the SWBversion and 1.6-litreEcoBoost and 1.6 TDCi engines in theLWBver-sions.Express on Wheels got to test drive both the

five- and seven-seater versions: the Ford Tour-neo Connect 1.0 Ecoboost (five-seater) and theGrandTourneoConnect 1.6 Ecoboost TitaniumAuto LWB (seven-seater)

ExteriorMy first thought on seeing the big, white

LWBseven-seaterFordTourneauConnect,wasthat while it’s not exactly ugly, it will not bewinning prizes for its outer beauty. However, travelling in one made me notice all the othermini-buses on the road and I soon came to theconclusionthat it iswithoutadoubtbetter look-ing than most of these types of vehicles on ourroads.Let’s be honest - they are not really built or

bought for their looksbut rather their practical-ity. And much like those practical shoes thatyouwear for their comfort and to get youwher-ever you want to be without pain and effortwhile still looking neat (no, I am not talkingabout Crocs or tekkies), the Tourneo soon grewonme. Why? Because it feels as though you aredrivingacarandnotabusandyousoongetusedto the advantages of all that space and comfort.

Not to mention the fact that it isn’t as thirstyas one would expect from a vehicle this size –thanks to the Ecoboost engines. The Tourneo is easy to climb in and out of,

even for shorter people, while still giving thesense of height one has in a SUV.The kids loved the high seating position and

I loved the sliding doors – and the peace ofmindthey bring on windy days. And the doors are so easy to slide that even

thesmalleronescanclimbinandoutof thevehi-cle without need of assistance.

InteriorBig was my surprise to find a sunroof in the

Grand Tourneo LWB version, while the chil-dren liked the trays that folded down from theback of the front seats. In the SWB five-seater test model we drove,

they were quite chuffed with their own aero-plane-like stowage cubicles in the roof behindthe driver’s seat.Further enhancing the practical nature of

this vehicle, the second and third rows can befolded flat torevealamassive2 761 litresofpack-

ing space in the case of the LWB or 2 620 litresfor theSWBversion.Theadditional seats in theback of the seven-seater can be folded and tum-bled todisappear into the floor fora flat surface. The top-of-the-range models are equipped

with Ford’s Sync sound system, which offersBluetoothconnectivity.ThereareUSBandaux-iliary inputs as well as remote controls on thesteering-wheel.The layout of the dashboard is very much in

theFordstyleandit’sonly thebig, cumbersomesun visors that remind you that you are actual-ly in a bus and not a family sedan.

Ride: 1.6 Ecoboost LWBMost impressive during my time spent with

the Tourneos was the drive – it truly feels likeyou are driving a sedan. During my first dayintheGrandTourneo, IwassointimidatedwithitssizethatI felt Ihadtofindthebiggestparkingspot in the lot. But by day two I was ready tozip into just about any available parking spot. The Grand Tourneo was also equipped with acamera that switches on automatically whenhitting the reverse button. The six-speed automatic gearbox was the

cherry on top for the comfortable ride theGrand Tourneo offers. The powerful 1.6 Eco-Boost engine delivers a maximum output of110kW and a 240Nm torque peak. The averageconsumption is rated at 8.0l/100km and CO2emissions at 184 g/km.Theacceleration is goodand the ride is smooth and easy. This little busis definitely not as slouchy as onewould expectfromavehicle thissizewithanautomatic trans-mission and 1.6-litre engine.

Ride: 1.0 Ecoboost SWBEvenmore impressive is the performance of

the 1.0Ecoboost engine in theSWBversion.Be-ing able to power so capably and noiselessly avehicle of this size, is proof of why this enginewas last year named the engine of the year foran unprecedented third consecutive year.It produces 74kWofpowerandan impressive

170Nm of torque and is paired with a six-speedmanual transmission. Its fuel consumption isgiven as a mere 5.6l/100km in the combined cy-cle, matched to 129g of CO2 per km.

GONE are the days when the rural youthhad to travel long distances by bus to cele-brate Youth Day in the urban areas.

The youth of Hlabatshane location inMthatha ended the belief that they had totravel to urban areas in order to commemo-rate June 16 and instead hosted celebrationsin their own backyard.Thousands of youths from around Hlabat-

shane gathered at the Hlabatshane SeniorSecondary School (SSS) grounds to cele-brate June 16 through sport. This was thebrainchild of the Hlabatshane Youth Devel-opment Structure. The chairperson of the structure, Sibonile

Matyeni, said they wanted to change the be-lief that this day is celebrated only in theurban areas.“Here in the localities our youth is faced

by challenges of drugs, unemployment,HIV/AIDS and a high rate of school drop-outs. So this is why we have decided to hostthis event close to them to share informa-tion so that they can be armed with knowl-edge to surmount such challenges,” saidMatyeni.Among the people whowere invited to the

event were National Youth Development

(NYD), Love Life and the main sponsor ofthe event, Mthatha Built It.As the day was celebrated through sport,

the codes that topped the agenda were soc-cer and netball. There were two soccerteams that participated in the tournament, while there were six teams participating inthe netball code.Prizes consisted of kit, prize money and

balls and there was also an award for thetop goal scorer of the tournament. The net-ball winner was Izinyoka and Fast Elevenwon the soccer.Matyeni said they are trying to keep the

youth busy and away from drugs, usingsport as something which could improvetheir lives and keep them fit.He said their wish was to host the tourna-

ment annually and to attract more youthfrom surrounding communities. Hethanked the sponsors of the event, high-lighting Vodacom and Build It.
