Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a won-
derful time with friends and
family during the holiday.
Our branch had an early
Christmas Luncheon at Pea-
cock Gardens Cuisine of
India on December 3rd. It
was great to get together with peer teachers
and have a relaxed time. Now all the restful
and special times behind us, I wish you all the
best and a great start in the year of 2013.
Since our first General meeting in November,
we have had successful events. The Winterfest
at Mt.Sac was well organized and run by Co-
Chairs Ann and Masako with many teachers’
help. The event was such a long one and I
want to thank all teachers and especially Co-
Chairs for their time and effort. Another
great event was at Oakmont Senior Center
for Community Outreach Recital. It was the
first event that the Music Student Service
League (MSSL) students were greatly involved
in. They organized two recitals and provided
refreshment throughout the recital. The high-
light of the event was when the choir’s perfor-
mance interacted with the audience singing
and dancing to Christmas songs. It was great
to see our branch is giving our students an
opportunity to reach out to the community to
serve them.
There are many exciting events ahead of us in
2013. Before any events, January is the
month of inputting CM students’ repertoire
online. Please complete it by the end of the
month. It is important to double check for the
correct syllabus requirements for the student’s
CM level. If you have any questions or second
thoughts as you are preparing it, ask our CM
Chair, Jennifer Cruz. We have one General
Recital at Pasadena Steinway Gallery on Jan-
uary 26th and Theme/General Recital at
Claremont School of Music on February 16th.
The Claremont School of Music is a new venue
for our branch. Please look at our website for
detailed information of the location as you
need. Our branch VOCE will be held at AP
Learning Center on February 3rd. This event is
for solo in vocal/winds/strings, and for ensem-
ble. Please look for the chair, Ying Li’s report
for the changed procedure of competition
starting this year, and the deadline infor-
mation. The Community Outreach Recital with
the theme of ‘Love’ is on February 16th at
Oakmont Senior Center. These recitals can
have overwhelming participants before CM.
Please do not wait but send application forms
to chairs early.
I believe our branch will have another success-
ful year with each of your help and input in
our future programs. So please come ready
to tackle a full agenda of these recitals, CM,
and competitions of 2013 at our next General
Meeting. It will be on Monday, January 7th
at 10:30 am at the Diamond Bar Center. I
truly look forward to making a great year
with you all.
Sincerely,
Hester Kim
Greetings from the President

Ann Liao Eshagpoor and Masako Okamura-Klassen, Co-Chair Winterfest was held on November 17th, 2012, at Mt. San Antonio College and it was a great success. Thank you all who participated and help for the event. There was a Classical Theme in Piano Categories. Students from 20 studios participated this year, 28 of which are piano stu-dents, 14 were wind students, and 11 were string stu-dents. We were very honored to have Sylvia Barton, Dr. Robert Watson, Kay Pech, and Anna Choias our panel of judges this year.

“A Big Success”
The Community Outreach Recital at Oakmont facility of Chino Hills on the first of December was en-
joyable for all. The Oakmont was warm and inviting, all dressed up for the holidays! Our 25 stu-
dents did a wonderful job in 2 recitals. A big thank you to the Music Student Service League ( MSSL)
for the delicious refreshments and programs they donated though their fund raising efforts.
We had about 40 residents in attendance that afternoon, they really had a good time. Julie Lo’s
“Little Angels” choir was a big hit in the finale for the second program. Everyone loved seeing the
young singers with their cute choreography. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the par-
ticipating teachers and those who helped out. We could not have done it without you!
I hope to extend the playing time for the upcoming “Valentine’s Day” recital in February , along with
notification about parking instructions.
Happy New Year to all!

CM REPORT (January 2013)
by Jennifer Cruz, CM Chair
As we embark on a New Year, we begin another important process of the CM 2013 Online Registration—entering students’ repertoire and evaluation report info. Having completed the first stage of enrollment this past November, this next procedure is still just as crucial. Teachers need to be extra careful when entering their students’ CM information online. It is extremely important that the repertoire and technical exercises match the exact syllabus requirements of the students’ CM level. This is especially true for Key-board and String teachers since the newest version of the Syllabus for these instruments will be in effect this year. Any errors found on students’ evaluation forms may result in an “Ineligible for Certificate” rating, which makes students ineligible for Branch Honors
and/or Convention. (For more details on IC & RAL ratings, please see pgs. 7-8.)
The online database is open from January 2nd-January 31st. Before you input any information, be aware of the following:
Carefully select your students’ repertoire to match their assigned CM level
Teachers must be sure to use the most current version of syllabus (esp. Keyboard/Strings—2012 Edition). Review all
addendums (see Oct Newsletter for a complete list).
Assign an appropriate Syllabus piece listed on the correct page of the chosen level (for each of your students).
Students must meet all technical & sight-reading requirements per level
For Panel teachers: the deadline to enter Panel students’ repertoire info is January 15th.
Do not input any AM/PM or DAY 1/DAY 2 requests on the option feature of your student’s online form. These sections
must remain blank. All such requests will be erased from the student’s form.
Carpool option features are to be used for siblings and accompanists only. (Please follow the directions as indicated on
the “Instructions for entering Online Evaluation Information” attached to this newsletter.
Determine whether your students are eligible to enroll in Branch honors or Convention (based on the current Branch Hon-
ors Guidelines located on p. 8 and the Convention Recital Performance Guidelines on p. 9).
If applying for Convention, decide on the type of Recital (including the actual piece to be performed) and input the
exact timing of the piece(s). Be aware of specific time limits per recital.
Please take time to review the “CM Policy and Procedures” and the “CM 2013 Instructions for Entering Online Evaluation Information”, even if you are a returning CM teacher. There may be some new changes to procedures you may be unaware of. The Teacher’s Education slideshow presentation and the State CM Newsletter (December) also contain more helpful information and
guidelines to successfully complete this enrollment process.
CM 2013 EVALUATIONS
Here are the assigned CM 2013 Evaluation dates per discipline:
Keyboard Saturday, March 2, 2013 AND Sunday, March 3, 2013 (All Day)
Strings Sunday, March 3, 2013 (All Day)
Winds Saturday, March 2, 2013 (AM)
Voice Sunday, March 3, 2013 (AM)
Specific evaluation times will be announced in late February. Keyboard students will also be informed of their exact day (Sat or Sun)
of their evaluation.
Page 7 MTAC Diamond Bar Branch
MULTI-INSTRUMENT CM EVALUATIONS
If your student is enrolled in CM with multiple instruments (e.g., Piano & Violin), please inform me via email so I can schedule their eval-
uations on the same day. If your student prefers to have their evaluations on separate days, please let me know as well.
PANEL TEACHERS
You will soon receive important info regarding Panel evaluation dates via email. Please look for the exact dates and location of your student’s Panel evaluation on this notice; they will NOT be held at our Branch’s CM (Cal Poly). You must also indicate on your student’s Evaluation report form which day (DAY 1, DAY 2, etc.) our Branch is assigned to in order to properly schedule your Panel student’s evaluation at that particular venue and date. For those Panel students who are not exempt from Theory, they must still complete their Theory test at Cal Poly during our Branch’s regularly scheduled CM dates (either 3/2 or 3/3). Please email me which day they prefer
to take their theory test so I can inform the Registration chair.
**IMPORTANT**: Please submit a self-addressed stamped envelope to the CM Chair Jennifer Cruz to receive your Panel students’ evalua-
tion forms after CM.
CM SCHEDULING
Scheduling for student evaluations will be finalized and emailed to teachers by the end of February. If there are any scheduling con-flicts due to religious or school-related issues, a written request must be submitted no later than January 31st. Please email all Stu-dent scheduling requests to me at [email protected]. All requests are not necessarily guaranteed, and will be determined by
the CM chair on a case-by-case scenario. You may be asked to provide written verification of your student’s scheduling conflict.
TEACHER WORK ASSIGNMENTS AND SCHEDULE
Your Teacher Work assignment and Schedule will be emailed to you towards the latter part of February. If there are any scheduling conflicts due to work or other valid reasons (as determined by the CM chair or Assistant CM Chair Masako Okamura), please email these special requests no later than January 31st. All requests pertaining to Teacher work assignments or scheduling should be emailed to Masako ([email protected]). As noted above, all requests are not necessarily guaranteed and will be determined on a case-by-case scenario. You may be asked to provide written verification of your scheduling conflict. Please be aware that fines may
be imposed for not fulfilling your work requirements as indicated on the Branch Teacher Contract (See below for info).
REVISED CM FINES & FEES
Please see p.___ for a revised list of CM fees and fines (i.e., Fees for Rescheduling; MUP’s; Unfulfilled Teacher Work Requirements, and
etc.) which is now in effect. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.
CM MEETINGS (GENERAL & COMMITTEE)
Please make plans to attend our upcoming General Meeting on January 7th at 10:30 AM where more CM instruction and announce-ments will be made. The CM Committee will also meet on Saturday, January 5 at 6:30 PM to discuss important tasks per CM depart-
ment in preparation for CM day. The actual meeting location will be sent in a separate email soon.
It’s hard to believe that CM is only a few months away! Thank you for your ongoing cooperation and support as we rapidly ap-proach our CM date. I encourage us all to keep updated on any upcoming CM announcements by regularly checking your email and reviewing any CM tips-of-the-week sent by the CM Council. As always, if there are any questions or concerns in regards to this enroll-
ment process, please email me. See you all at our next meeting!

Six Reasons for Automatic Remain at Level (RAL)
A student receiving an RAL must repeat the same level (both Theory & Performance) in order to progress to a higher CM Level on their next CM Evaluation. Any year which a student receives an RAL rating will not be included as a participa-tion year for the Senior Medallion or Panel Audition Eligibility.
RAL IS ONLY FOR STUDENTS CLEARLY NOT PREPARED FOR THE
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OR AUTOMATIC RAL SITUATIONS
Students shall receive an Automatic Remain at Level for any one of the following (CM Policy & Procedures 2012-
2013, p.12):
1) Repertoire: Advanced (Level 10) required Etude not memorized.
2) Sight Reading: Refuses to Attempt (legally blind students exempt).
2) Technique: None prepared or cannot play without notation. (Strings Etude excepted.)
4) Memory Requirement from Syllabus not met.
5) Number of Pieces: The number of pieces required is not correct.
6) Photocopy Restrictions: A student so brings photocopied music into evaluation room or brings music repro-duced from a CD or the Internet without a logo or the source (URL)/Student will not be heard by Evaluator and will automatically receive an RAL. (Exception: to facilitate page turns. The original score must be present.)
Students who receive a Fail grade (less than 70%) on written Theory Exam will receive a Remain at Level rating.
Four Reasons for Ineligible for Certificate (IC)
The “Ineligible for Certificate” rating shall be used for students who perform a proficient CM Performance Evaluation, but who have violated rules and regulations not related to performance quality.
Students who receive an IC rating will not receive a CM Certificate for the CM year in which the IC was given. However, they are permitted to move to a higher CM Level at their next Performance Evaluation. It will disqualify a stu-dent from Branch Honors, Convention Recitals, and Panel Convention Performances. It will not affect future Senior Award or Panel eligibility.
Students shall receive an IC rating for any one of the following (CM Policies & Procedures 2012-2013, pgs. 12-13):
1) Performing incorrect repertoire categories, Syllabus piece, or not having a required Syllabus piece
2) Performing technique from an incorrect Syllabus or level
3) Advanced Level required Etude not from the Etude list in Piano Syllabus.
4) Performing any Unacceptable Repertoire
Page 9 MTAC Diamond Bar Branch
Five Reasons for No Branch Honors/No Convention
Students shall receive an “Ineligible for Branch Honors or Convention Recitals” for the following (CM Policies
& Procedures 2012-2013, pg.13):
1) Performance did not meet the required Evaluator ratings and/or theory score
2) An RAL or IC was issued
3) Original music scores were not provided to the Evaluator, including a second original score even if the piece was memorized (and a third original score if a live accompanist performs)
4) Repertoire performed was not listed in the Evaluation Report Form
5) English translation of the Title and Composer for music published in a foreign language was not provided.
For Strings, Winds, and Voice Branch Evaluations, any pieces being considered for Branch Honors or Conven-
tion programs must be accompanied by a live accompanist for all CM Levels.
Additional Branch Eligibility Requirements for Branch Honors & Convention:
1) Students must be Level 5-Advanced (for Branch Honors applicants only)
2) Sight Reading and Technique must be rated “Good or Excellent”
3) Repertoire must be rated “Good or Excellent”
4) All pieces MUST be memorized
(NOTE: Memory is optional for Woodwinds & Ensembles. For Strings: Classical Period Sonatas are ex-empt from memory requirement. )
The criteria for all instruments are:
CM Level: 5-Advanced
School Grade/Age: Any grade or age
Theory Exam: Minimum score of at least 80%
[NOTE: For String students, the Fundamentals of Music (Oral or Written) exam for their current level must be passed with a score of 80% or higher.]
Sight-Reading: Excellent or Good
Technique: Excellent or Good
Repertoire: Excellent or Good
Performance: Must be marked PASS
Memorization requirement: All pieces memorized & performance ready
Page 10 MTAC Diamond Bar Branch
(NOTE: Memory is optional for Woodwinds & Ensembles. For Strings: Classical Period Sonatas are exempt from memory requirement. )
For Strings, Winds and Voice Branch Evaluations, any pieces being considered for Convention pro-
grams must be accompanied by a live accompanist for all CM Levels.
THE DIAMOND BAR BRANCH WILL NOT HOLD CM BRANCH HONORS
RECITALS. (The evaluators will not select a composer or piece for Branch Hon-
ors)
In lieu of an Honors Recital, the Branch will award medals & stickers based on the following require-ments*:
1) To receive a Branch Honors Sticker (in addition to the above requirements),
the student must score an average rating of 4- or higher.
2) To receive a Branch Honors Medal (in addition to the above requirements), the student must
score an average rating of 5- or higher.
(*If eligible, students may receive both a sticker and a medal.)
CM 2013 Convention Guidelines
To be eligible, all pieces played for the evaluation must be memorized and well performed. (Exception: Memorization is optional for Winds and Ensembles.)
For Strings, Winds and Voice Branch Evaluations, any pieces being considered for Convention programs must be accompanied by a live accompanist for all CM Levels.
The student must also receive:
Theory: 80% or higher (even though the passing score is 70%)
Sight Reading: Excellent or Good
Technique: Excellent or Good
Repertoire: Excellent or Good
Performance: Must be marked PASS
IMPORTANT: The student will NOT be eligible for the Honors or Convention programs if the appropriate box is not checked on the student’s evaluation report, even if the student received excellent ratings in all areas of the evaluation. The student is also ineligible if he or she brings in a photocopy to his or her evaluation, or fails to bring an original, pub-lished score for the evaluator for each piece played. (CM Policy III, No. 7)
