How Many Children and Youth Experience Homelessness?

❏ 2011-2012 37,532 homeless children and youth were enrolled in public schools across Michigan. An 80% increase since the 2007-2008 school year

❏ 2012-2013 Mt. Pleasant Public Schools Enrolled 129 homeless children and youth

Who is considered homeless?● Children and youth who lack

fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence, including children and youth who are:

● sharing the house of other persons due to loss of housing

● living in motels, hotels, cars, public spaces, campgrounds, or similar settings

● living in emergency or transitional shelters

● abandoned in hospitals or in the first 6 months of foster care

● unaccompanied youth, including any youth not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian

Homeless children have the right to:

★ free and appropriate education

★ attend and enroll immediately even it unable to provide records required for enrollment

★ enroll or remain in school without a permanent address

★ stay in school of origin (to the extent feasible)

★ go to school where child last attended or school where temporarily living

★ transportation (to the extent feasible)

★ participate in extracurricular activities

★ automatically qualify for free meals

as school

★ eligible for Title I and/or special education services if needed
