    FROM THE PASTORS DESK

    Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! This weekends Gospel mes-sage from John 10 addresses the subject of leader-ship. Jesus tells us quite clearly and unequivocallythat He is the Good Shepherd. For us as Christians,

all leadership, then, must measure up against theplatinum standard that Jesus sets for us: wisdom, fairness, compassion, commitment, and genuineaccountability. And guess what? All human leader-shipallhuman leadership inevitably falls short ofthe mark. People invariably let us down. Ratherthan become discouraged, disillusioned, and cyni-cal, though, we are called to return ever and alwaysto Christ as our model and inspiration. In surren-dering to that fundamental truth, we are able tokeep a sense of perspective about what and who isreally important in our lives.

This weekend, I will be leaving to assume re-sponsibilities as pastor at Old Mission Santa Bar-bara, starting August 1. In the meantime, I will betaking a few months for sabbatical time, including astudy pilgrimage to Assisi this summer. While I amlooking forward to my new assignment, I am alsoquite sad to leave Mission San Luis Rey. The Frenchhave a great saying: A partir cest a morir unpeu, which means To leave is to die a little.

But as one parishioner put things rather frankly :Father Chuck, youre leaving already? We werejust beginning to like you! Seriously, though, leaving is a kind of little death for me. I will missyou all and cannot thank you enough for your tre-mendous goodness and generosity to me and to allof us Franciscan friars who come streaming in andout of your lives.

I believe that the Parish and Mission will be leftin the hands of tremendously capable leaders. In a

formal way, the friars will be responsible for thespiritual care of the parish and Mission. In thislight, I believe we are really blessed. We have theadministrative skill and savvy of Father David. Fa-ther Adrian, as you know, is a gifted homilist andliturgist, as well as a deep listener. Father Luis, inaddition to his gifts of preaching and administra-tion, has worked successfully to draw people into

new and revitalized expressions of popular devo-tion: the Via Crucis, the feast of Our Lady of Gua-dalupe, the celebration of our patron saint, KingLouis of France, and so on. Fr. Andres offers hisgentle and compassionate earthinessalways witha great twist of humor. Frs. Michael and Larrycontinue to feed and inspire through their scholar-

ship and deep reflection. And our newest friar,Brother Chris is blossoming as retreat center direc-tor with his gifts of teaching and hospitality.

But the friars, of course, represent only one as-pect of leadership in the Parish and Mission. Ourparish family is bursting with gifted leaders in termsof our dedicated and capable Parish Staff, our won-derful parish schoolOld Mission Montessori, andthrough the abundance of riches in our more than60 parish ministries. And we are a community ofcommunities as well, benefitting from the richnessof so many groups who contribute both to the di-

versity and unity of our parish/ Mission family, in-cluding the English-speaking communities, Hispan-ics, Filipinos, Samoans, Guamanians, military fami-lies, youth, retirees, snow birds. well, just every-one. It will be the job of the friars to continue toidentify, encourage, and animate lay leadership ledby the Spirit.

In the coming years, it will be the challenge andtask of all parish leaders to continue to pray for anddedicate themselves to being and becoming moreauthentically the welcoming Presence of Jesus

Christ in the North County. We are called to thisone mission at the Mission. For my part, I am sohappy and proud to have been able to play my partin this process. Thank you for your welcome, yourfriendship, your support, and your forgiving pa-tience with my shortcomings and limitations. Youare in my heart and prayers. Always.

    God bless,

    Fr. Chuck

PS: Finally, in a separate matter, I am pleased toannounce that the Parish has signed a memoran-dum of understanding with the Diocese to pur-chase a parcel of three acres of land immediatelyadjacent to us. This purchase will secure presentuses and provide us with an invaluable buffer zonewith any future neighbors. Kudos to Allen Hart-man, our former Business Manager for his greatwork!

We invite you to serveWe are the Hands of Christ!

The freshness of Spring and the new life of Easter aid us inrenewing our commitment to a Christ-centered way of life.As we reflect on how we have used our God-given gifts oftime and talents, as well as our gifts of material possessionsduring this past year, we become aware of how we have

shared those gifts. As we reflect, we may ask ourselves:Have I shared my gift of time wisely among my family,

friends, work, prayer and weekly Eucharist? Am I willingto take-a-step, reprioritize and plan to share a little moretime in those areas which I consider important?

Do I acknowledge and give thanks that all around me isgift from our most generous God? Am I able to take-a-step and acknowledge that I, too, am a gift from God?

Have I begun the journey of discerning what special giftsand talents God has given me? Am I willing to take-a-step in this most vital process toward our parishWelcome Sunday when Ill be asked to share my gifts?

Before we can begin using and sharing our God-given giftsand talents, we must first discover what we have been given! Then, when we live a stewardship way of life, out of grati-tude to God for all that we have been given, our work be-comes holy.

By accepting Jesus mission as our own at Baptism and de-pending on the Eucharist to nourish and sustain us for thischallenge we become ever more aware that at home, atwork, at the parish, in the community and in the world Weare the Hands of Christ!

Mientras tanto, estar tomando varios me-

    nuestra parroquia.
