Ice Box Invitational Handball Doubles January 28-29, 2011

St. Anthony AC, Minneapolis The 17th annual Ice Box Doubles Invitational was anything but an icebox. The first day above freezing in 2011 came with the tournament breaking an nearly unprecedented cold streak. It was warm enough to pool water on the roof that required siphoning off to stop a leak in one court. This year only five of the 30 matches went to a tie-breaker. Usually we see over half the matches going down to the wire as repeating teams come back each year for revenge. Everyone enjoyed the closed circuit TV action, the usual non-stop great hospitality enhanced by the unique atmosphere of the St. Anthony AC.

Open Doubles Finalists John Nett, Andy Nett,

Pete Crouser, Ryan Maloney The Open division was not defended by last years champs Steve Johnson and Tim Labey. They must have seen Andy

2011 Top Ten

Based on the results of the 2011 State Open Singles, these are the Top Ten handballers in MN.

1. Andy Nett 2. Matt Hiber 3. Pete Crouser 4. Ryan Maloney 5. Matt Langhorst 6. Tom Nett 7. Mike Wells 8. John Stoffel 9. Tim Kappes 10. Steve Tamminga

If you think you’re better than these guys, compete in the Open Singles tournament in 2012.

Nett coming. He was terrific pounding the ball past Crouser and Maloney in the finals. Only Tom Bowman seemed to be able to handle the power and return some great shots from Andy with winners of his own in the semifinals. But he couldn’t maintain the pace after losing a 16 in the first game, Tom and Jeff Ryan could only muster 3 points in the second. Andy and father John defended their 2009 title defeating the 2008 champs of Pete Crouser and Ryan Maloney. Great handball all around!!! Silas Danielson and Tim Kappes defeated Phil Kleineschay and David Wolvington (that’s right – Wolvington hadn’t played for five years before stepping on the court for this tournament!) to take consolation honors and collected $20 for the effort.

A Doubles Finalists

Hank Ulrich, Brett Broxey, John Miller, Emil Weiler

The dynasty was broken in the A division. Brett Broxey and Hank Ulrich closed out last years champs Emil Weiler and John Miller in two games to prevent a five-peat. Last year Brett and Hank came up one point short – not this year! In a flip-flop from last year, Emil and John were tested a bit on their way to the finals while Brett and Hank seemed to have the all the right shots not letting anyone score more than 7 points. Forced up into the A division, Rich Ryan selected Curt Schlenner as his partner – a great choice as Curt played some great handball. The Friday night match against Larry Larson and Steve Tamminga was wild as Curt controlled the first game but lost some gas in the second game. It looked like an easy win as Larson and Tamminga jumped out to 8-0 lead in the tie breaker. Then Curt got hot to tie the game at 8. After calling a couple of double bounces on himself, Larson got in and served out. (Tamminga never served in the tie-breaker!) Schlenner and Ryan ultimately claimed consolation honors in a tie-breaker against Mike Black and John Nakasone. It might have been the coni semifinal against Brian Mahaffy and Clancy Mylan that took a little too much from Mike and John.

B Doubles Finalists

Mark Mylan, Ed Brazman, Joe Taylor, Mike Erdmanczyk

Last years consolation winners, Ed Brazman and Mark Mylan delivered the desired results winning the B division defeating Joe Taylor and Shaq (Mike Erdmanczyk) in an entertaining come-from-behind 9-21, 21-15, 11-8 final match. It was particularly tough to concentrate as the noisy gallery watching the A consolation final in the adjacent court had definitely found the beer. Taylor and Erdmanczyk had a pretty good semifinal match against number one seeds Ed Simonet and Tom Bordenave. Brazman and Mylan got a easy forfeit in the first round when Alan Laveille was unable to make it in from Duluth due to freezing rain and snow. They paid for it in the semifinals against veterans John Peterson and Paul Nelson with a slim 21-20, 15-21, 11-5 win. It turns out the champions never claimed

Schaumann, and Crouser have kept Minnesotans excited about handball for many years. There have been many more Minnesotans that have pushed these players and could compete with the top players in the country on any given day. This has helped players at all levels in Minnesota improve and stay interested in the game, and MSHA has become one of the top handball organizations in the country. It is exciting to see that there will be another Pro Tour beginning this year. The 2011/2012 WPH Race for Eight, presented by Simple Green, will mark the first organized pro tour since 2004. It debuts in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in October 2011, eventually landing in Seattle, Washington in May 2012. Hopefully this will help to get more young players excited about handball.

Should State Tournaments be Held Outside of the Twin Cities area?

There has been much debate this year about holding one or more of the state tournaments in a location outside of the Twin Cities. Mankato was strongly considered for one of the 2012 tournaments. What do you think? Would this increase or decrease the odds of you participating? Is this a good idea to promote the growth of handball throughout the state? Let us know.

Minnesota State Handball Championships

Open Doubles Handball University of Minnesota Recreational

Sports Center, Minneapolis, MN April 1-2, 2011

The 2011 MSHA State Doubles tournament was filled with upsets and tiebreakers. In the 4 of the 6 divisions the top seeds fell, often to much lower seeds. However, at the end of the day, tournament favorites Andy and John Nett cruised to repeat as State Doubles champions without relinquishing a game. The Open Division was not without drama as two of the initial drop down matches went to tiebreakers including an outstanding match in which Mike Wells and Ryan Maloney came back from a loss in the first game to outlast Tim Kappes and Mat Langhorst in a marathon match. Tom Bowman and Mike Gustafson took third place after showing real grit to return from a first game lost to the Schaumanns in the quarter finals only to lose to the champions in the semis.

Pete Crouser, Chris Iverson,

John Nett, Andy Nett It was good to see the Schaumann brothers, Kris and Keith back on the court in the state doubles. They won top honors in the drop-down A division defeating Tim Kappes and Mat Langhorst after both teams had grueling, tiebreaker semi final matches. Steve Tamminga and Brandon

Paul Dorland, John Nakasone, Hank Ulrich, Brett Broxey

In a very unusual turn of events, Paul Dorland did not take first place! Hank Ulrich and Brett Broxey defeated the perennial champion and partner John Naksone for the Golden Masters A title. Brian Coonce and Mike Black defeated Curt Schlenner and Andy Stabb for third place and Phil Kleineschay and Tim Fichtel took consolation honors.

Joe Nordahl, Bill Lundblad

The C division featured some great young talent as everyone saw lots of competition in a five team round robin. Joe Nordahl and Bill Lundblad emerged victorious.

B Division

Nick Olson, Weston Bussler, Andy Buckett, Dan VanAarsten

Rich Ryan, Mike McQuillan Joe Taylor, Pete Kaehler

In a tournament defined by upsets, the two biggest upsets were the in Golden Master B Division where Pete Kaehler and Joe Taylor, the 4th seed of 6 teams, were victorious and the B Division in which Wes Bussler and Nick Olson, the 8th and bottom seed, triumphed. In that same B division, parity was the word of the day as five of the seven matches in the championship bracket went to tiebreakers. For Olson and Bussler, survival of grueling and long matches was as important as kill shots and gets. With so many great matches in most all of the divisions, one can’t help but be excited for more potentially great matches in a month for State Singles. Handball, Rituals, and Sportsmanship Opinion by Dr. Chris Foley

I was watching an old videotape I had purchased many years ago that highlighted Jimmy Jacobs who to me was one of the all-time greats of the hand ball game. Art Linkletter was narrating his early years over black and white film clips of Jimmy playing the likes of Vic Herskowitz and others when I noticed something uncharacteristic of the modern game. It is important to know that 3 of my 4 sons and by spouse have all been quite involved in USTA tennis. Hence, Dad, being the only "tennis-challenged" person in the house, was off as the spectator. Have you ever watched tennis players formally warm-up for a match? Well, other than practicing some serves, they warm up together -- even the fiercest rivals. There is a ritual series of ground strokes, volleys, overheads, etc. that are struck with the opposing players graciously setting up the other person to practice 4-6 specific strokes of each kind. It is just considered part of the courtesy ritual prior to a match that all players learn at very young ages. Following this mutual series of practice shots, serves are practiced individually but in the opposite courts so as, of course, not to interfere with the opponent.

There is a hidden, mutual respect in this pre-game, warm-up ritual that is likable and I think important to the game itself. Well, what I noticed for a brief moment in the 50-year-old scratchy film in one of the short glimpses of Jacobs and Herskowitz warming up was that they were using the same ball and that they were warming up together. Now, this was a very unique match that brought the Old Guard into play against the up-and-coming Young Lion at the old Los Angeles Athletic Club with celebrities in tow and film crews trying to do something that likely had not been done very much. Nonetheless, it occurred to me how similar to the USTA tennis warm-up ritual it seemed and how it conveyed a sportsman-like attitude on the part of the players. As we all know, there are times when the atmosphere on the court is more like 2 boxers staring one another down then 2 golfers shaking hands on the first tee. But, at the end of the day, I do think our beloved sport should resemble golfers more than the boxers. Simply changing a small ritual that lasts only about 5 minutes might lend itself to important messages that we want to convey throughout the game.

Tennis has much to teach handball in many regards. Currently, there are four players that dominate the game in a way that has not been seen in many years. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray are, for the most part, a cut above everyone else. Yet, there is such mutual respect that they go out of their way to convey sportsmanship that is rarely seen in other professional sports. Organized tennis has one ritual that emphasizes this aspect of sportsmanship that I think contributes to the level of graciousness that we see by the best professionals. With rare exceptions, all USTA matches are refereed by the players themselves. Generally speaking, players go out of their way to make the call on a serve or during a round in favor of the other player. Bad behavior like "hooking" someone or making intentionally wrong calls is quickly identified by the players culture, and the offender is ostracized which rapidly changes the behavior. This usually occurs in younger age groups, and by the time a player gets into the 16 to 18-year-old age groups, the practice becomes very rare.

Why can't handball do the same thing? The management of many tournaments is compounded by the need to find a referee. Losers are usually “punished” by having to referee the next match. How many players can referee competently? We all know that some players either do not care to referee matches or happen to be very poor at it. Handball would be best served by letting players referee on an honor system. Any player could request a referee at any time, but I think this would be uncommon generally speaking. It would certainly simplify the management of all but the highest level tournament. It would also send a message that handball expects no less than the highest levels of sportsmanship and honor during the game itself.

So the next time you warm-up, perhaps share the ball, start a ritual of hitting right hands, left hands, ceiling balls, kill shots, and perhaps serves and returns of serves in a way such that each player gets to warm up a variety of shots. In the next time we have a small local tournament, consider letting the players referee themselves for all but perhaps the semi-finals and finals. This would be a great message to send throughout our small handball culture.

USHA Central Regional Championships

April 15-16, 2011 Life Time Fitness Center, Fridley,

Minnesota The USHA Central Regional Championships returned to Minnesota for the first time in over 20 years at the pristine Life Time Fitness Center in Fridley, Minnesota. Players traveled through snow storms and floods and from as far away as Minot, ND (500 miles one way!) to compete in this year’s championships. Former handball pro and Minnesota’s all time great, Tim Labey, made his first USHA Central Regional Open Singles appearance since his victory over Chicago’s, “Bobby Androwski” back in 1989. Tim was 26 years old when he won his last USHA Central Regional Open Singles title and is now a Veteran Master (45+) player. Twenty two years later at age 48, Tim was once again in the finals, however; was now competing against the up and coming Travis Owens. Travis is a tremendous athlete from Denver, Colorado but is finishing his master’s degree in Aberdeen, SD. Ironically, Travis is 26 years old; the same age as Labey’s oldest daughter. Travis took advantage of his youth and jumped out to a 9-0 lead the first game and eventually defeated Labey, 21-9. The crowd was getting ready to pack it in as Owens was up 19-13 in the second. Labey took his last time out and seemed to regain his competitive desire to give it all he had. After siding Travis out, Tim switched serves from his lob to his low hard crack serve and came back to win 21-19. Labey recaptured his 4th wind and rolled through the tiebreaker with an 11-3 Victory! The A singles was also an impressive championship as 14 year old Tyler Stoffel of Mankato rolled through the bracket without losing a game. In fact, Tyler held all of his opponents under 10 one of two games of each match. Stoffel had to defeat Drew Engelmeyer, Glenn Solin and Eric Seiberlich to win the USHA Central Regional A Championships. The last time I saw a 14 year old handball player play at this level was back in 1990 in Atlanta, Georgia and that player was none other than, “David Chapman”. Mark my words, if Tyler stays focused on handball, he will be the next USHA National Champion from Minnesota. Another up and coming handball player is 13 year old David Miller of St. Paul. David made it to the finals of the B

division but came up short against John Lailberte. It was a great match but John was too strong for David in the championship. I’m sure these two fine players will have some very exciting matches in the near future. The 60+ division was won by new Minnesota resident, Bob Milliken. Bob rolled to the finals but was pushed to a tiebreaker in the Championships against Mike McQuillian. Mike had a tough time adjusting to Bob’s game but eventually adapted and won the second game. I’m sure these two great players will also meet in future tournaments and continue to have close battles. When it comes to handball tournaments, the club and the employees can “make” or “break” the event. At Life Time fitness, the expectations are always exceeded. The Life Time café provided snacks and fruit throughout the tournament along with a fabulous lunch on Saturday afternoon between matches. The Life Time staff also installed the new P/A system that was requested by the MSHA for the 2011 USHA National Championships. Again, Life Time didn’t take any short cuts. The sound system was professionally installed and the product is 1st class.

2011 Spring Classic and State Open

Singles University of Minnesota Rec Center,

Minneapolis, MN April 29 – May 1, 2011

The 2011 Minnesota State Open Singles tournament reached a century high attendance record – not quite the numbers we had four decades ago but a high for this century. The University of Minnesota Rec. Center and the tournament committee did an outstanding job, again, running a first class event. So was this the year that someone would be able to unseat Matt Hiberin the Open singles? Once again the crowd was looking for an Andy Nett vs. Hiber finals. But first, Pete Crouser had something to say. Pete dispatched Isiah Jones 13 and 9 in the quarters and looked like he might take Hiber in the semis with a 21-15 first game.

!

Hiber methodically won the second game while Pete chased everything. Hiber won the tie-breaker convincingly after a strong start. Andy Net breezed through the lower bracket to meet Matt in the finals. The match did not disappoint with Nett showing his pro style and dominating Hiber in the first game. Hiber showed his game in the second and a tie-breaker for the chamionship was set. Nett smoked with kills from either hand and anywhere on the court winning the deciding game 11-3.

The A division featured experience versus youth in the John Nakasone vs. Brandon Glaze final. Youth won the very tight match at 20-21, 21-20, 11-7. Tyler Stoffel took third place over Jess Fleck and Will Camisa took consolation honors. It is great to see products of the college programs in Minnesota collecting trophies in the top divisions.

Michael Miller continues to improve winning the 2011 B Division over the steadily improving Drew Engelmeyer. Both these guys should be challenging for the A title soon. Matt Johnson

outlasted Nick Olson for third place in an 11-8 tie-breaker. Pat Macdonald took home the consolation trophy.

David Miller blew through the C Division with no opponent getting more than 7 points! Aaron Victorin-Vangerud advanced from the 14h seed before he ran into the Miller buzz-saw in the finals. Adalberto Cordero Jr. defeated Vern Miller for third and Kara Smith took consolation honors in a division with more than 50% tie-breakers.

A very strong Golden Masters (50+) A division featured some very one-sided matches. Tim Fichtel beat everyone in the round robin. Brett Broxey took second place.

The Golden Master (50+) B division had some new and old faces and proved to be very competitive. George Langhorst defeated Mark McQuillan who advanced to finals after Sheldon Silberman had to

forfeit after a leg injury in the semis which left the third place trophy for John Kunesh. Bob Victorin-Vangerud won the consolation bracket. The Super Masters (60+) division brought some new faces to the show as several have crossed into the magic 60’s. Still, no one could defeat the real master John Nett. Bob Milliken tried and put up a good fight but John just has a great command of the court, Mike McQuillan gave Nett the toughest match but ended up in third place. Greg Taylor survived to get the consolation prize.

Ah, to be young again! Well, that is not what the Diamond Masters (70+) were thinking. They may have played like it though. A pretty spry Paul Ernster defeated a scrappy Don Krocak to get the top honors and Bill Boyd captured third.

It was great to see a nearly full draw for the Women Division – a definite product of the college programs. Jennie Zhu defeated Lindsay Mortland for the championship and

Jessica Bohlken defeated Jessica Knudson for third. Let’s hope some these folks can continue and compete at the national level.

Thirty-three competitors vied for the top spot in the Novice Division. What great testament to the various YMCA and college programs at recruiting and training and engaging new players! Drew Cristiansen won the coveted trophy defeating Andrew Dziekan in a very entertaining match. Jason Kraus took home third place and Tom Werner took both consolation and iron man honors after six matches in three days! OPEN SINGLES Preliminary Round • Tom Nett (Winona) def. Steve
