MSH structural hollow sections
circular, Square, rectangular
p.2 / Vallourec / MSH structural hollow sections
MSH - the universal section
Circular, square and rectangular hollow sections are used as modern structural elements in the most varied fields of engineering.
In building construction, attractive concepts can be realised by integrating hollow sections into the facade design. In mechanical engineering and steel structures, MSH sections are used for their favourable behaviour under pres-sure and torsional loads or multi-axial bending stresses.
Usually, the sections are directly welded together without the need for joint straps or stiffening plates.
A point worthy of special mention is the excellent and unlimited weldability of MSH sections, due to the uniform microstructure produced by hot forming in the normalising temperature range.
The benefits of MSH sections are:
Fully compliant with EN 10210; nu-merous international quality certifica-tions
High visual appeal of seamless sur-face through hot-rolling process
Small corner radii and large, flat con-necting areas in square and rectangu-lar MSH sections
High static load capacity Optimum buckling load capacity re-flected by a highly favourable buck-ling curve
High notch toughness for low-tem-perature applications
Unrestricted weldability even in the corner zones of square and rectangu-lar MSH sections
Structural safety and reliability through uniform hardness distribution and low residual stresses
A large range of sizes and extra-long mill lengths (standard manufacturing program with approximately 740 cir-cular, 225 square and 450 rectangular MSH sizes in lengths up to 16 m)
Tailor-made options featuring a wide range of steel grades (carbon struc-tural steels, high-strength special steels and quenched-and-tempered fine-grain structural steels), wall thicknesses up to 25 mm and extra tight corner radii (Ra ≤ 1,0 x T)

a wide range of grades
MSH sections are manufactured in a wide range of materials according to national and international standards.
In view of the main application areas – e.g. load-bearing components in steel construction and mechanical engineer-ing – the following material has estab-lished itself as standard grade and is preferably stocked by dealers:S355J2H according to EN 10210-1
In order to expand the current range of hot-rolled hollow sections in standard-ised steels, Vallourec launched a new technologically sophisticated grade series: Forterior®
Oceanfit®
FineXcell®
S355J2H
The special suitability of this steel for the manufacture of MSH sections is based on the following properties: yield and tensile strength according to standard
low carbon equivalent guaranteed impact toughness at -20 °C
suitable for galvanising proof of guaranteed quality assur-ance: the acceptance certificate 3.1 acc. to EN 10204
certified in accordance with European construction regulations
Forterior®
Forterior® is the entry grade series of Vallourec’s higher-strength steels for mechanical engineering applications. Compared to standard grades, it gives you increased tensile strength coupled with outstanding weldability and, in some variants, higher impact toughness as well. What’s more, Forterior® grades offer significant weight saving poten-tials: structures can be designed slim-mer without compromising on strength and load capacity or on weldability.
Popular applications for Forterior® are e.g. highly stressed heavy-wall hydrau-lic cylinders and frame structures for agricultural machinery.
Oceanfit®
Vallourec’s series of Oceanfit® grades is geared specifically to the numerous offshore applications where tubes are exposed to the most extreme environ-mental conditions. Besides outstand-ing mechanical properties and impact toughness at temperatures well below freezing point, these grades demon-strate excellent welding properties. Depending on the harshness of condi-tions, Oceanfit® grades can be selected to precisely match application require-ments in ship construction, superstruc-tures, jack-up rigs, platform cranes, helicopter decks and housings specifi-
cally designed for long-term resistance in challenging project environments.
Oceanfit® production sites are success-fully certified on the basis of a general “Grade Approval” by the internationally recognised classification societies Det Norske Veritas Germani scher Lloyd (DNV GL) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
FineXcell®
FineXcell® is Vallourec’s most advanced series of high-strength fine-grain steels, providing the perfect combination of properties for use in the most demanding yet cost-effective steel structures. Metic-ulously controlled chemical compositions and advanced heat treatment methods plus the comprehensive know-how and expertise of Vallourec are the prerequi-sites for achieving a homogeneous fine-grained microstructure which, in turn, permits the combination of three impor-tant yet difficult to reconcile properties: high strength good impact toughness excellent weldability
FineXcell® grades can achieve yield strength levels up to an impressive 1000 MPa. Innovative crane construction, weight-optimised load-bearing struc-tures and other high-tech steel compo-nents under particularly high stresses are therefore the ideal application areas.

Quality ensures trust and customer satisfaction, while guaranteeing the economic success of a company. Quality leadership is therefore the top priority and a specifi c factor of our corporate policy. The quality assur-ance system at Vallourec is applied at all the production facilities and incorporates all stages of production, from steel manufacture and the hot rolling process to the fi nished, ready-for-shipment product.
The quality assurance departments of the individual plants work inde-pendently of the manufacturing units. The specially trained and highly qual-ifi ed QA staff follow the procedures specifi ed in the Vallourec Quality Assurance brochure.
Vallourec carries approvals from lead-ing national and international accept-ance bodies and classifi cation soci-eties, as well as from customers and their authorised third-party agents. All plants are certifi ed to ISO 9001.
