Amphenol MS and 97 series are two series of thread-coupledconnectors designed to meet the operating requirements of

. Available in a variety of styles and classes, theseconnectors are primarily used in a range of military and industrialapplications where specific degrees of environmental protectionare required.

Although both MS and 97 series have identical insertarrangements and other similar component parts, the two seriesdiffer in that Amphenol MS series of connectors are also qualifiedto meet the operating requirements of Defence Standard JointServices Specification , issued by the ElectronicsComponents Standardization Organisation (LCSO).Amphenol 97 series is exclusively designed to meet the needs ofindustry, which may call for deviations from MIL specification.

Amphenol 97B connectors feature a quick mating bayonetcoupling with an audible full mating feature. This series uses thesame insert patterns and are used in high shock andvibration environments encountered in commercial, geophysical,aerospace, ground support and shipboard applications.

General description

These electrical connectors are designated MSbecause the interchangeability and operatingcharacteristics are determined by U. S. MilitarySpecifications. These specifications are revisedfrom time to time to incorporate performancerequirements dictated by design advances andmore stringent requirements of allied equipment.The several designations of MS, 97 and 97Bconnectors meet different requirements of MIL-C-5015. These designations and generaldescriptions are as follows :

Shell constructions include solid back shell (A)and environmental resistant (E, F & R).Environmental resistant connectors provide amoisture barrier and assure a positive seal. Shellstyles consist of wall type receptacles (3100),cable receptacles (3101), box receptacles(3102), straight plugs (3106) and angle plugs(3108). Shell hardware is manufactured fromaluminium alloy and cadmium plated with olivedrab chromate finish. This finish has excellentconductivity; it is non-reflecting and corrosionresistant. Black anodised finish and cadmium-free zinc plating with olive drab chromate finishare also available. For details, contact factory.

Pin and socket contacts are of brass andgenerally silver plated. Gold plating is alsoavailable. For details contact factory. Thesecontacts are available for solder or crimptermination. Special arrangements of contacts forpre-mating and pre-earth are also available.

Environmental resisting

E

Synthetic inserts and grommet manufacturedaccording to MIL-R-3065, offer high dielectricstrength and are resistant to oils, gasoline andlow temperature. 97 series inserts use DiallylPhthalate ( Blue DAP). DAPP is dimensionallystable, has high arc resistance and highinsulation resistance under both humidity andthermal stress.

Plugs are available in A, F and R types.Receptacles are available in A, E, F and R types.

Intended for general service usage to provideconvenient means of connecting anddisconnecting electrical circuits in industrial andmilitary applications.

Intended for use where the connector will besubject to heavy condensation and rapidchanges in temperature or pressure and/orwhere the connector is subjected to high vibratoryconditions.

Environmental resisting with grommet sealand strain relief backshell except for 3102 type.

Position X

To avoid cross-plugging problems in applicationsrequiring the use of more than one connector ofthe same size and arrangement, alternate insertrotations are available as indicated in theaccompanying chart.

As shown in the daigram below, the front face ofthe pin insert is rotated within the shell in aclockwise direction from the normal shell key. Thesocket insert would be rotated counterclockwisethe same number of degrees with respect to thenormal shell key.

The following insert arrangements have the samealternate insert rotations for W,X,Y and Z whichare as below : :
