• Remember the elements of good photography: light, subject matter, composition and background

• Find your unique vision, use your inspiration photographers/designers to study interesting compositions and tips for engaging images

Photoshoot Choices – 100 points Remember that regardless of the subject, COMPOSITION is most important. For each shoot you choose, create a shot list and complete the shoot, you will have to hand in a contact sheet in the fall for each selected idea

• Choose 5 of the following ideas, try to think about experimenting with both camera techniques, editing ideas and post processing materials

• At least 2 of your shoot should include some technique for this website: • https://www.studentartguide.com/articles/creative-photography-ideas

o Defining an Event – Attend a festival or event, before you go do some research of the event and make

a shot list. Document your time there including objects, people, events, and activities. What things define this event? Make sure to pack a tripod if you will be shooting in low light.

o This is my Life – Create a self-portrait series that details some aspect of your life or personality that is most important to you. This can be taken with a tripod and timer or with a friend’s help.

o Be an ANT be a GIANT (foreshortening) – Create an artwork with vantage point in mind. Subject is open, but composition is the key. For this assignment hold your camera at a very low point on the ground and take a photos of your subject from below (ANT). OR stand high above your subject and take a photo looking down. (GIANT)

o Interesting reflective surfaces: Complete a shoot that highlights interesting reflections. o Capturing Motion: Pick an object(s) and experiment with capturing it in motion. Try motion blur,

zoom blur, freezing and panning o Text in Photography – Included written or typed text in your photographs, think about making a

statement or highlighting an issue with your use of text

o Create illusions using forced perspective – Research different techniques for forced perspective photos and set up a shoot that highlights the impossible

o Create and action sequence series by combine multiple exposures, as in the high-speed photography of Ray Demski, you will use Photoshop in the fall to combine the images

o Experiment with night photography and create a light painting or drawing outside at night o Focus on Color – Pick a color and take photos that highlight that color. Think about more vs. less. Is

the whole picture that color or just one spot that stands out from the background? o Patterns in Nature – Create a photo shoot that highlights patterns in nature. (look closely) o Architecture – Find interesting Historic buildings, famous landmarks, bridges, city skylines and old

churches and photograph the uniqueness about these buildings o What Remains – Photograph the effects of people on the world (this shoot should have no people in

it, just the effects of them on the world) Think about what a room looks like after you leave it, your kitchen during dinner and before cleanup, etc.

o The Beauty of Water – Shoot a photo series around the effect that water has on object and the world. Think about all the different forms of water, from rain droplets to rushing waterfalls, heavy rainfalls, how water changes the appearance of an object

* Guideline for Comprehensive Project Plan - 60 points Create 2 project plans for each of your top 2 concentration ideas (4 total). Each project plan should include the following sections:

§ Big Idea: What are you going to do and why? What message do you want to convey to your viewers? What is the overall feel of the project? This is a statement that answers your overall question and how you are going visually communicate this idea

o Concentration Example: How can the rigor of being a high school athletic affect the physical, emotional and mental wellbeing of the person?

o Big Idea Example: The increase in the risk of concussion and other physical injuries can negatively impact the students’ academic achievement because of missed classes. In my photographs I would like to communicate the difficulty students can experience when suffering from an injury and missing school.

§ Inspiration Work: Please attach at least 3 images from the internet that describe the style and processes and color application you will use. Answer the statement: Mrs. Rudloff this is what I want my final project to look like.

o Inspiration Artworks: (photographs/graphics/art) Pictures of art, graphics and photography that show conceptual or visual techniques and processes you would like to try

§ Techniques: What specific techniques are you going to use? What program? o Techniques and Processes used: (not just in camera but also post process and experimental) o Also, please include at least one of the 2-D skills from the first page and how you are going to focus

on and include that in your final remember the college board is looking for you to use these skills o Describe the processes and techniques that you will use to communicate your big idea o Example: For this piece I want to experiment with printing parts of the photograph on vellum to

reflect the hazy and disconnected nature that injury can cause in students.

§ Reference images (graphic design): Save and attach all images that you will use in this assignment. Some should be from your photoshoots and some can be from the internet but make sure they are good quality. Remember when using pictures from the internet you must put them into a unique composition that is your own design.

§ Thumbnail sketches (graphic design or photo compilation) at least 3: Play with composition and viewpoint of your project

§ Shot List o A list of your photos with as much detail as possible, think of composition, light and angles o Example: § Shooting from a first-person viewpoint looking at a classroom with a teacher teaching in the front of

the room § Another first-person viewpoint looking down at their homework with a pencil and hand in the

foreground. § You should brainstorm as many possible photos or graphic solutions as possible § This can be done written out or in thumbnail sketches

Page 5: Mrs.Rudloff Summer Assignments 2020 · 2020-06-10 · inspiration, and utilize the time over the summer to brainstorm concentration ideas. Pace yourself and plan out your time. Last

Supplies: A DSLR camera is a necessity, as well as a tripod, multiple memory cards, a journal or sketchbook for brainstorming and to keep your plans processes (optional equipment: external flash)

More Food for Thought: “What should I photograph?”

§ Besides your chosen photo shoots think about completing a month-long photo a day challenge (these

can be found on the internet)

§ More is more – feel free to shoot more, do not limit yourself to these assignments

§ Also ask yourself how you can connect concept with material and process what would enhance your

message
