Arizona Science StandardGrade :2Strand 4: Life Science Life Science expands students biological understanding of life by focusing on the characteristics of living things, the diversity of life, and how organisms and populations change over time in terms of biological adaptation and genetics. This understanding includes the relationship of structures to their functions and life cycles, interrelationships of matter and energy in living organisms, and the interactions of living organisms with their environment.

Concept 1: Characteristics of Organisms Understand that basic structures in plants and animals serve a function. PO 1. Identify animal structures that serve different functions 13The headThe first part of an insect is its head. The head of an insect is used for eating food, and understanding its environment.

ThoraxThe thorax is the middle part of an insects body. It is used to balance and support 3 sets of legs. Sometimes the insect has wings. Wings are also located on the thorax.

AbdomenThe abdomen of an insect is the third body part. The abdomen is used for digestion and reproduction.

Six legsAll insects have 3 pairs of legs. This makes 6 legs total. Legs help insects crawl, swim, dig and grasp. Notice the two pointed objects coming out of the insects head. These are not legs, these are antennae.
