    for their leadership to blossom.

    MOVIE MAKING

You may have noticed our senior students videoing the

event this year. They are really enjoying the learning

through our movie making specialist Harley who is

working alongside our senior classes for 6 sessions.

Check out their video they put together. All of the small

details that they have been learning such as how they

begin the movie, how characters are centred (the rule of

thirds) and the shots. It involves lots of practice and

tweaking and they are still mastering these skills. See our

QR code later in the newsletter to watch it!

It is exciting that we have secured some funding to get a

school drone. Our goal is to be able to share our

learning and activities with you via these wonderful

    technology tools.

Our senior students are working towards creating their

own movie as part of our Manaiakalani journey. Two

will be chosen from our school to present at the Te Ahu

Centre later on in the year. We will be sure to advertise

to you and give our school community a chance to view

    too!

    CULTURAL AND ART EXTRAVAGANZA

A reminder again about our cultural and art

extravaganza being held on Thursday 26th September.

Put in your diaries the date to join us in an art auction

and sampling delicious dishes from around the world!

We are needing some support with food and clean up

for the event. Please come in and see us if you are

available. It is all for the good of our kids! Spread the

word and invite your whanau, family and friends!

    DAFFODIL DAY

It was lovely to support Daffodil Day as a school and

community. We enjoyed wearing yellow for the day

    and raised an amazing

    $207.90

We know these funds will stay locally which is very

helpful. So many of us have been affected by cancer in

some way, so our prayers remain with our community.

Have a wonderful and safe weekend with whanau and

    friends.

    God bless, Kathryn Carey (Principal)

Hard to believe that we only have 3 weeks left of the

term. The weeks just fly by with so many great things

going on at PCS. Our students have shone in cross

country, the talent quest, leadership, tuakana teina roles

and student voice with their learning. I have had the

privilege of carrying out formal observations throughout

the school this term as part of teacher appraisal. It is so

exciting to see the level of critical thinking that is

happening in each class. The students are able to talk

about their learning and what helps them. The exciting

part was to hear how much they enjoy learning and are

proud of their achievements. I am so grateful to our

teachers who spend time planning learning that

promotes these great thinking skills to help nurture

    student achievement.

Each teacher is working on their own teacher inquiry

goals to help build on student achievement in their

    classrooms. They all undertake professional

development to keep building up their own kete,

alongside our staff meetings, Manaiakalani meetings and

Kahui Ako. It is all part of the building blocks to

support teachers and learners. We certainly have a

    fabulous team here at PCS!

    SOCIAL JUSTICE

Next week it is really exciting to focus on “Social

Justice”. The theme set by Caritas this year is “Fair, you

say?” The students work through some really special

resources provided by Caritas, and it is another chance

for them to look in to the world and help make it a

better place using our values and teachings of Christ.

    TALENT QUEST

We had great fun last week celebrating our talented

students at PCS. The students that took part in the

talent quest were sharing their gifts with us. I was so

impressed with the range of talent we have in our

school! I am also really proud of the Special Character

Team who worked hard behind the scenes to plan,

advertise, create auditions, music, judging sheets and

  • Humility and cats—Abridged from Fr Carlo’s Sermon

Jesus in today’s Gospel reminds us about humility. Speaking of humility, Cats are not known for this trait. In fact thousands of years ago cats were worshiped as gods. Apparently they have not forgotten this. The life of a cat revolves around what the cat wants to do: to eat, to stretch, to be petted, to sleep. Cats seem to be able to exult themselves and get away with it. They are perhaps the only animals to which the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel (Luke 14: 1, 7-14) do not apply.

For what Jesus tells His disciples is only by humbling our-selves that we can be exulted.

Now what is humility? And why is it that Jesus thinks it is so important?

Humility is the willingness to acknowledge our own limitations. Humility tells us that it is a benefit for us to own our weakness-es.

We actually take a step forward when we are able to say: I am not as patient as I need to be with my family; I am not as crea-tive as someone else might be; I find it difficult to say I am sorry; I hold prejudices against certain people; I am not a good listener.

Through all these honest acknowledgements of our limita-tions, we can move towards the truth without devaluing our-selves.

Because honest humility allows us to acknowledge our weak-nesses and at the same time realize that we remain people of goodness and dignity.

We might not be perfect, but we have value. We might not be able to do everything, but we have something to contribute. Humility allows us to claim the truth about ourselves.

But humility does not only influence the understanding of our-selves. It changes our view of others. For humility allows us to see the goodness of others and to treat them with reverence.

The theologian Martin Buber was once asked a very common question: “Where is God?” Buber replied “God is found be-tween people.” God is found in the relationships that bind us to one another.

The proud person does not see how crucially we need one another. The person of humility does in fact recognize the need for relationships and therefore finds God “between us.”

Cats believe they are self-sufficient, that they can do it on their own. Christians know that they are not. They understand that God is to be found when we acknowledge our limitations and recognize our radical need for one another.

This fundamental insight is what makes love the highest of all Christian virtues. For love tells us that it is in our relationship to each other that we find God.

Love is, indeed, the only way to God.

If love is the only road to God, it is only the humble who will walk upon it.

    God Bless, Phil

Congratulations to our students of the week. They are

chosen by the classroom teacher based on standing out in

the past two weeks around our focus RISE—respect, in-

spire, service and excellence. Part of this award is a book

that the school sponsors. We are always very proud of

They represented themselves so well last week and we are very proud of them all.

Everyone was a prize getter on the day!! A special congratulations to Evan Murray

for his keyboard skills. He was the winner for 2019. We think we need a school

band after seeing such a range of talent on the day!! Scan the QR code to watch the

  • PLEASE NOTE!! We ask all drivers to enter and exit on Dominion Road for safety. If you do go down by the church onto Eden Terrace please wait until our walkers have used this driveway. Please ensure to drive slowly and stop at the bottom of the hill. Thank you for your co-operation with this.

A reminder, for safety of our children, please remain in the carpark until 3pm to enable our children to depart safely. Please drive slowly in the carpark. No child is to leave the gate area unsupervised. Please do not park in the yellow lines for safety.

Whanau, let us always remember to show whanaungatanga at Pompallier. We R.I.S.E (respect, inspire, service, excellence) to be disciples of Jesus.

Congratulations to the students who gained top 10 placings at the Central Zones Cross Country last week. They will go

on to compete at the Far North Zones next. It is for 8+ year old students. We are really proud of their achievements!

It was lovely to be able to thank Mrs

Cutler at prayer assembly on Monday for

hosting our school cross country this

term. There is a lot of work that goes on

behind the scenes to make this a safe and

successful day for all. Mrs Cutler and her

family do a huge amount of preparation

for us to spend the day at their beautiful

farm and we are very grateful! I am sure

they will enjoy sharing in the wonderful

stories and fun of the day—we certainly

enjoy the chatter and story telling at

school! It is some of the best writing we

    see.

    Thanks Cutlers!!!

  • We are celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori next week. These are ideas that you could practice at home about zones of regulation, and verbalizing how you feel with your child in Te Reo Maori. Have a go! Remember we have meha Maori on the first weekend of every month, where we celebrate Mass in Te Reo, so come along and help nurture the language of Te Reo Maori. The theme of Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori this year is kia kaha reo, so the more we practice our reo the better we get!
