From the Pastor – Rev. Mark A. Reece, Jr.

I’ve had as much fun teaching on Wednesday nights this past month as I have in my time at Piney Grove. I suppose I can chalk this up as a “rich lesson learned.” For years, I’ve been asking my small groups what they want to study. The responses have always been sincere, yet somewhat predictable. Favorite books of the Bible or types of literature are common requests from parishioners. Over the summer there were some questions in Bible study that erupted unplanned conversation about a number of topics. Where there is

energy, there is usually widespread interest. As a result, I started taking note of these moments rather than considering them derailments. What emerged was a mini-series that our newest church member, Amanda Smith, encouraged me to call “Big Questions.” We’ve explored the theological contributions of Augustine and Pelagius, as well as their revived debates in the lives of John Calvin and Jacob Arminius. We explored the origins of the Baptist movement and reflected on the lives of great leaders such as John Smyth, Thomas Helwys, Roger Williams, Isaac Backus, and John Leland, conversations that have led to new interests and more big questions about religious freedom and church/state separation. We moved from the Baptist past to Baptist present, and discussed the emergence of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and our church’s identity. We concluded our series with a rich conversation regarding historical conceptualizations of the Holy Trinity. I hope everyone who attended these conversations learned something new. I learned something during each gathering from many of you. In September, we will return to “Worship Seeds,” which is a reflection and conversation on our worship focus for the following Sunday mornings. I do want to take this opportunity to invite you out to our Wednesday night studies. Many of our members have told me that if they had to choose between our informal Wednesday night gathering or Sunday morning worship, they would come to Wednesday night services. It is a two-way conversation. Will you give it a try? In October, we may transition into something else. We’ll just have to wait and see where the energy is! As we begin a new church year on September 1, I encourage you to discern where your energy and passions are. Connecting my desire to teach with the lingering questions of my Bible study participants was fruitful and productive. Frederick Buechner once said that “the place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” What is it in the Kingdom of God that brings you gladness? As you look around our church and community, what is it that people are hungry for? What gives you fulfillment and builds up, serves, and ministers to those around you? We’ve used spiritual gift inventories and a number of discipleship tools in churches throughout the years. There have been countless books written on this topic and consultants are working hard to help leadership and laity connect with their community. But, simplicity may be the answer here. You may discover the tasks that bring gladness to you and serves others doesn’t have an official title. That’s ok. The tasks that give you energy may not intersect at all with what you do in the professional world. That’s ok. The tasks that give you energy may surprise everyone at Piney Grove because they think you’re only capable of or you enjoy something else. That’s ok ,too. The deep hunger you see in the world may or may not represent a need that exists on the church campus. That, too, is ok and even better! We come to church to be equipped and our purpose is found only when we depart to serve. We’re living in such an age where congregations, congregants, and clergy alike are being reinvented by God to minister in and to a changing world. Where is your energy? Where is the world’s hunger? What intersection in this world is God calling you to? Wherever that may be, you’ve been empowered to make a difference. At work, school, or just “as you go” about your daily lives, remember that God has indeed blessed us to be a blessing to others. May that continue to be our goal in the month of September. Thanks for being such a great church!

From the Minister of Music

I know it is only the first of September, but it is already time to start thinking about Christmas. There are many special opportunities to serve during the Advent and Christmas season. If you have any suggestions for this special time of year, please let me know as soon as possible. Our sanctuary choir will perform the Christmas cantata entitled “O Little Town of Bethlehem” on Sunday morning, December 17, 2017, during the 11:00 AM worship service. We welcome

anyone who would like to “sing for the season” and join our choir for the cantata. Our “J.O.Y.” (Just Older Youth) group will go Christmas caroling to our nursing home residents on Tuesday, December 19, 2017. On Wednesday evening, December 20, 2017, we will have church-wide Christmas caroling. We hope to fill the church bus and church van as we go out into the community and sing about the birth of the one who was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger, Jesus. As we prepare for this special time of the year, I hope you will find a way to be involved as we remember “the reason for the season.”

Sing for the Season!

On a quiet, calm night in Bethlehem, heaven’s light broke through the darkness with the birth of Christ. Shepherds and wise men joined a host of angels to rejoice in this divine arrival on earth. Two-thousand years later, we reflect on how this single event in a humble stable would change the rest of history.

Join us as we take a journey back in time to this incredible story with our Ready To Sing musical for Christmas. The arrangements by Russell Mauldin and narration by Sue C. Smith unfold the wonder of the events that took place in Bethlehem and move our hearts to songs of celebration of the greatest gift we know.

O Little Town of Bethlehem includes: Bethlehem Overture with O Come, All Ye Faithful • O Little Town (The Glory of Christmas) • Journey Medley (Hark! the Herald Angels Sing / We Three Kings) •How Far (Part 1) • Strange Way to Save the World • What Child Is This? • It’s Still the Greatest Story Ever Told • How Far (Part 2) • Come to Bethlehem Finale (It’s Still the Greatest Story Ever Told / Angels We Have Heard on High / Joy to the World!).

Join our sanctuary choir as we take this Gospel message into our community of faith and beyond. Our special rehearsals will last from 3:00 – 4:00 PM unless noted otherwise.

September 10 ~ September 24 (4:00 – 5:00 PM) ~ October 8 October 22 ~ November 19 ~ November 26 December 3 ~ December 10 ~ December 13

Musically yours, Paul Danley

“The Grove’s Helping Hand”

“The Grove’s Helping Hand” is a ministry that gives a helping hand to struggling families who run out of groceries before their paycheck arrives. It’s also a ministry to those who have been in the hospital and just don’t have the strength to tackle the grocery store yet. Perhaps we could give a helping hand to some elderly person who can’t get out at all. The food closet is located in the rear of the chapel. A wagon for donations is located in the narthex and it includes a list of needed items.

September Needs Crackers, peanut butter, jelly, pasta and sauce, canned meats, cereal, paper goods, and condiments

Attention: College Students

All college students, including those attending Surry Community College, are encouraged to submit their mailing address for the 2017-2018 school year to Scottie Isaacs, Ministry Assistant. This information will be used as we select “Student of the Week” for our weekly bulletin.

Community Events

“A Place at the Table” is a monthly lunch gathering for spiritual reflection and discussing issues at the intersection of faith and culture. Are you able to break for lunch? Retired? Needing an alternative Bible study? Everyone has “A Place at the Table.” Join us at noon on the third Tuesday of each month. Come early. Come late. Just come. Please reserve your weekly spot by emailing Pastor Mark at [email protected]. Forgot to reserve your spot? Come on. We’ll pull up a chair. Our next gathering is at noon on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at Chase N Charli Restaurant By the River (1384 South Main Street, Mount Airy).
