T he latest-generation Mercedes-Benz R-Class shows a new self-confidence. Its entire appearance is noticeably more attractive,

underlining the unique character of this multi-talented vehicle. The focus of the designers was on the completely restyled front section, with an emphasis on width and a horizontally structured bonnet to make the vehicle appear more harmonious, muscular and dynamic.

Expressive: the new front section is full of character

At the front end of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class, the bonnet, wings, radiator grille, headlamps and bumper have been completely redesigned. On request, in conjunction with bi-xenon headlamps, a chrome insert enhances the integrated LED daytime driving lights. The character of the Mercedes R-Class can also be underlined by an optional, strikingly contoured, chrome-look underguard.

The new bonnet has more marked contours, and is more arrow-shaped at the front edge. The wider, higher radiator grille is more steeply angled, while the bumper cladding is more

striking, with clear-cut lines. The side recesses in the bumper, where the fog lamps and daytime driving lights are located, are spaced well apart and give the front section an impression of width. The lines of the side skirts are harmoniously continued forward in the updated wings and grille. The new, dynamic “face” of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class is particularly impressive. The newly designed headlamps blend perfectly into the front end, emphasising the horizontal lines. the day where the side aspect is concerned. With the coupé-like lines of the window area, the luxury tourer distinguishes itself attractively from conventional MPVs. Eye-catching details of the clearly contoured flanks include the larger exterior mirror housings, which are set well away from the doors and are held by slim stems. The strikingly designed mirror housings in the vehicle colour have integrated indicator repeaters in the form of a stylised arrow. The new wheel designs are equally eye-catching: the range includes light-alloy wheels in 5-spoke, 5-twin-spoke or 10-spoke designs in sizes from 43.2 to 53.3 centimetres (17 to 21 inches).

Perfect finish: the rear section of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class

The rear section harmoniously continues the design idiom of the front, with a new bumper cladding, modified tail lights, a diffuser and integrated tailpipe trim emphasising the width with more horizontal structures, as at the front. The bumper also picks up the line of the side skirts, giving the effect of a continuous line running around the entire bodywork. Tail lights with LED and fibre optic technology, new exterior contours and horizontally arranged lighting functions lend the finishing touches to the rear section.

Interior appointments: Sitting comfortably in spacious luxury

If there were a versatility test for automobile interiors, the Mercedes-

Benz R-Class would undoubtedly be a candidate for the top score. A wide variety of options are available when it comes to seat variations in particular: designed for a relaxed, safe driving environment, the saloon offers five seats as standard in both the normal and long-wheelbase versions, but four, six or even seven-seat configurations are also possible.

Seating arrangement: from 2-2-0 or 2-3-0 and 2-2-2 right up to a 2-3-2 system

The space provided behind the front seats is so generous that up to three child safety seats can be installed at the same time. If only four seats are required, the centre

backrest can be folded down to serve as an armrest. Alternatively, the six-seater version features a console as standard in place of the centre seat. This also enables the Mercedes R-Class to shine with four luxurious individual seats.

Mercedes-Benz R-Class customers who particularly like variety are able to produce other formations by opting for two individual seats in the rear. With three passengers seated in the middle row, this gives a total seating capacity of seven. Groups of up to six people choose the popular 2-2-2 seating system, which provides all the occupants with an individual seat. The Mercedes-Benz R-Class comes with partially power-adjustable seats for driver and front passenger as standard, while as an option front passengers can also enjoy the luxury of actively ventilated and heated multicontour seats with full power adjustment and memory function.

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class also reveals another benefit in the form of its large, versatile luggage

compartment: this has a capacity of up to 1950 litres, while the long-wheelbase version boasts 2385 litres. In all five-seat variants there is a separate stowage compartment beneath the load compartment floor, while the optional EASY PACK tailgate, which can be operated remotely by means of a switch or key, also makes access to the luggage compartment easier. This makes the Mercedes-Benz R-Class the most variable and spacious vehicle in the entire Mercedes-Benz passenger car product range.

The high-class interior - which seems even more spacious when fitted with the optional panoramic glass sunroof - makes use of new materials and colour combinations to enhance the high-class appeal and quality of this luxury tourer. At the same time they underline the sense of wellbeing which is so typical of a Mercedes-Benz interior. Available interior appointments include the upholstery combination of “Aspen” fabric and breathable, soft-touch ARTICO man-made leather.

As alternatives to the aluminium

trim with a dark longitudinal grain or the chrome trim in silver shadow, it is also possible to order luxurious wood trims in high-gloss brown eucalyptus, high-gloss brown burred walnut or high-gloss anthracite poplar.

The cockpit impresses with its newly designed instrument cluster. The dials and needles have a white background, and are even easier to read thanks to a three-dimensional effect.

That’s entertainment - telematics and multimedia in the Mercedes R-Class

The telematics of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class impress with intuitive and user-friendly operation, high performance and great versatility. The luxury tourer is fitted as standard with the Audio 20 CD system with CD changer. This includes a 12.7 cm (5-inch) colour display, a twin tuner for better radio reception, speed-sensitive volume control, eight loudspeakers and a keypad for entering telephone numbers and radio frequencies. A hands-free system with Bluetooth interface and an Aux-in connection for mobile audio devices such as an iPod are also integrated. On request, a Media Interface (UCI) is also available to connect an external music memory to the onboard

electronics and the control system, so that music tracks are shown in the instrument cluster and the colour display in the centre console, and can be conveniently accessed using the keys in the multifunction steering wheel. The battery of the audio device is charged at the same time.

Passengers can also enjoy full, concert-hall surround-sound with the optional, latest-generation Harman Kardon Logic7 sound system. With a high output, a digital signal processor (DSP) and Dolby Digital 5.1, this ensures an outstandingly clear listening experience. As an optional extra, there is also a rear seat entertainment system with two large 20.3 cm (8-inch) screens, a DVD player and two wireless headsets for greater freedom of movement, plus a remote control unit.

Safety: Eight airbags, crash-responsive head restraints and an electronic guardian angel

All models have numerous features as standard which help to make long journeys as well as short urban trips even safer and more relaxed. These features include the unique anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE, a complete restraint system with eight airbags, crash-responsive NECK-PRO front head restraints, a tyre pressure loss warning system and adaptive brake lights. Safety is also enhanced by high-performance telematic systems such as the Audio 20, Audio 50 APS or COMAND APS with an extremely user-friendly interface, as well as a raised seating position. This gives the driver a good view of the traffic conditions, enabling him or her to recognise potential dangers more quickly and easily.

The electronic guardian angel: PRE-SAFE has a preventive effect

Occupant protection in the new Mercedes-Benz R-Class begins well before an accident. The Mercedes-Benz invention PRE-SAFE is able to activate preventive measures reflexively when it recognises the danger of an accident, so that the belts and airbags can protect the occupants to best effect during the collision. This multiple award-winning technology is standard equipment.

Drive system and chassis: In addition to the economical petrol

variants adopted from the preceding model, with their customary effortless

power delivery and high drive comfort, a range of optimised diesel engines enhances the appeal of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class. With a fuel consumption figure of 7.6 l/100 km (combined NEDC consumption), the R 300 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY requires around 7 percent less fuel than its predecessor, the R 300 CDI without BlueEFFICIENCY technology.

Geared up: 7G-TRONIC as standard in all models.

All Mercedes R-Class models are equipped with the latest-generation of the innovative 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission. The Fuel Efficiency variant of the seven-speed transmission has new bearings and couplings. Different oil pressures and a new, low-friction oil help to reduce friction and churning losses. The new torque converter with slip-reduced lockup clutch likewise improves efficiency and aids fuel economy. In addition, standstill decoupling lowers fuel consumption. This technical feature reduces transmission input torque in “D” when the car is at rest, for example at traffic lights. This lowers the stress on the engine, making for lower fuel consumption, better vehicle acoustics, greater comfort at standstill and smoother idling. The slip-controlled clutch is engaged as soon as the driver releases the operating brake, ensuring no delay or quality compromise when the vehicle moves off.

Stability pact: the well-proven suspension of the R-Class

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class has a dynamically active and comfortable suspension with high safety reserves as standard. All model variants have steel springs, and in the 5+2-seater variants and the top R 500 4MATIC model self-levelling rear air suspension is included as standard. This self-levelling rear air suspension is available as an option for all other models. The AIRMATIC package with air suspension, the Adaptive Damping System and level adjustment improves both ride comfort and handling dynamics, and is likewise optionally available for all Mercedes-Benz R-Class models.

Jaguar reintroduced after more than a half a century

Jaguar models arrive to up the competition in the executive car market not only in Kenya but

the entire East African region

Jaguar has made a return to the Ke-nyan auto market. Jaguar that is being marketed by CMC Motors Group Limited has not been officially sold in Kenya for more than half a century.

The first batch of the Jaguar arrived in Kenya late last year, a few months after CMC was in August appointed to market the model in East Africa. This prompted CMC to expand the Land Rover Division thereafter renaming it the Jaguar Land

Rover Division.

Greg Forster, the General Manager in charge of the Jaguar Land Rover Divi-sion, says a comprehensive training pro-gramme was carried out for the Compa-ny’s personnel who are now responsible for selling and servicing the new model. By late last year, CMC had purchased special tools worth over Kshs. 2 million to handle the Jaguar. In addition, CMC says a team of trainers from the Jaguar head-quarters in Coventry, England jetted in the country to oversee intensive courses for CMC’s service and sales staff who are now in charge of the Jaguar.

The first batch of the Jaguar in the country that is currently at CMC’s show-room along Lusaka Road in Nairobi gives buyers a choice of three engines of the Jaguar XF. They are; the three-liter die-sel, the five-liter natural aspirated petrol

V8 and the five-liter supercharged petrol V8 (XF-R).

The Jaguar XF three-liter turbo diesel engine delivers 275PS and a massive 600Nm of torque during high performance, propelling the car to speed off from 0-100 kilome-ters per hour in just 6.4 seconds. This is enabled by the parallel turbo boosting system, which provides immediate response at low engine speeds. Apart from the great speed, the engine of this model has sig-nificantly improved fuel efficiency when compared to earlier models and other cars in this category by managing to consume on average of 6.8 liters per 100km. The five-liter natural aspirated petrol V8 has a maximum power of 385 horsepower at 6500 RPM. It has four valves per cylinder giving it a total of 32 valves. In this model, the auto company departs from

Jaguar’s flagship luxury sedan in half a century, returning to its legacy of sport-ing, stylish cars. A Jaguar XF with this engine is able to speed off from 0-100 kilometers per hour in just 5.7 seconds. “The maximum speed of this model is electronically limited to 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour),” Mohan says. This model has a maximum torque of 515NM at 3500 RPM. It has a fuel capacity of 69.5 liters.

Lastly, the five-liter supercharged petrol V8 engine that is referred to as the XF-R is slightly a bigger version of Jaguar’s XF saloon. It has an output of 510 horse-power with 625 NM of torque. This model is able to accelerate from 0-100 kilo-meters per hour in just 4.7 seconds. Its transmission is automatic with a manual shifter helping transfer power from the engine to the rear wheels. Its exterior features unique front bumper design and

quad exhaust tailpipes. The model also has rain sensing wipers and has rear parking aid with touch-screen vi-sual indicator. This model is available at the CMC showroom along Nairobi’s Lusaka Road for about Kshs. 12.4 million.

The three models of the Jaguar XF were shipped in Kenya boosted by an analysis by the Autocar magazine (an international magazine) which placed Jaguar first in a comparison with Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes Benz and attributed the success of the XF to ride comfort, poise and agility.

Closer home, Jaguar has a signifi-cant following in Africa especially in Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa. According to Forster, his Jaguar Land Rover Division will enable CMC to sell Jaguar in the entire East African


region. He says special arrangements are in place to ensure potential custom-ers in the region conveniently get the Jaguar model of their choice from the CMC Motors Group’s Lusaka Road based showroom in Nairobi.

The arrival of the Jaguar XF has opened doors for other models in this market. According to CMC, the Jaguar XJ super sedan and the Jaguar XK grand tourer will be available at the Lu-saka Road showroom early this 2011.

Looking at the two models; first, the XK is a two-door and four-passenger luxury sports coupe. It is equipped with a standard five-liter, V8, 385-horsepow-er engine that has an acceleration time of 4.9 seconds from rest to 100 kilome-ters per hour.

The new XJ on the other hand is avail-able in three engines; a five-liter 385hp naturally aspirated V8, five-liter 470hp supercharged V8 and a five-liter 510hp supercharged V8. The Jaguar XJ is constructed using Jaguar’s aerospace-inspired aluminum body technology, which makes the XJ at least 136 kilo-grams lighter than its rivals; providing benefits to performance, handling and fuel economy, while delivering increased strength, refinement and safety.

T he new dawn in the transport sector has tagged along benefits and challenges for dif-ferent stakeholders. This edition of the Mo-

tortrader magazine takes a close look at the effects of the ban of 14-seater PSV matatu

“Congestion in our urban areas is compounded by the increase in the number of matatus entering the Cen-tral Business District (CBD). To address this problem we are only going to allow bigger capacity buses that can carry more passengers (than what matatus do) to operate,” this is what transport minister Amos Kimunya said was the reason behind the government’s move to phase out 14-seater Public Service Vehicle (PSV) matatus from Kenyan roads from the onset of this month. While breaking the news Kimunya re-vealed that the cabinet had approved a proposal to ban 14-seater matatus and in their place have PSVs with a carry-ing capacity of 25 or more passengers. However, the minister is advising inves-tors to focus on buying buses with a ca-pacity of more than 40 passengers.

However, analysts view the move as having several implications. One, they argue, is aimed at ensuring that the government controls the PSV business.

“When you have one or two companies operating on a certain route, the opera-tors will be at the mercy of the state,” says Simon Werunga, a transport ana-lyst. “The government will have the guts to set fare ceiling that the operators will be expected to comply with, or risk hav-ing their licenses withdrawn or revoked, that is, being kicked out of the route and business all together.” This is based on the admission by Kimunya that when the plan is fully operational, one or two firms will be licensed to operate a given route for a specific period of time. However, the minister sees the move as a right one for the investors, insisting that it will curb cut-throat competition among the opera-tors. “Instead of competing for passen-gers especially during the off-peak as is the case now, when we implement this plan, Saccos will be more organized by allowing one bus at a time to fill up pas-sengers, Kimunya says.

Based on the fear that the state will con-trol the PSV business, Werunga notes that many willing investors (companies) will be on standby to join the business and this will give the government the leeway to set the terms and conditions of operation, including the amount of fare to charge commuters. However, this is a complete opposite of the self-regulation that Kimunya talked about when he an-nounced that the government will from the onset of this year not issue any new license to 14-seater matatu intending to

do PSV business, although existing ones will have their documents renewed. “No-body should think of making importation orders for the 14-seater matatu for use in the public transport as we plan to phase them out,” the minister warned. “We are encouraging matatu operators to form or join saccos (Savings and Credit Co-operatives) or companies so as to be is-sued with certificates to operate specific routes of their choice.”

Kimunya was clear that associations or companies that break the law will have their certificates revoked. This is the loop-hole that analysts are concerned about noting that it could be misused by the state to muzzle the operators.

The ministry of transport told those plan-ning to operate PSV business to register their SACCOS or companies with either the Ministry of Cooperatives or with the registrar of companies, respectively.

However, operators have been making all necessary preparations ever since the idea of phasing-out matatus to decongest roads was first made public in February 2006. “We have been negotiating with vehicle dealers and commercial banks so that the implementation takes effect smoothly,” Matatu Owners Association chairman Simon Kimutai says. “We initi-ated the negotiations as a group so as to stay up against the corporate world that has ready resources to buy new fleets of

vehicles of the recommended capac-ity.”

However, this notwithstanding, the Matatu Welfare Association chairman Dickson Mbugua says it could take up to six years to naturally phase out the 14-seater PSV matatus. In this regard, the ministry of transport has given itself a grace period of up to seven years to completely get rid of 14-seater PSV matatus from Kenyan roads.

In the face of this optimism, records at the ministry of transport indicate that currently there are 80,000 regis-tered PSVs in the country, with 60 per cent of them, that is, 48,000, operat-ing in urban centres. In Nairobi alone, the Matatu Welfare Association says 12,000 PSV 14-seater matatus oper-ate on the 50 routes in the Capital City.

Given this large number, why ban the matatus? The phase out plan for the matatus has been rooted on the Inte-grated National Transport Policy that says recent transport industry growth has been accompanied by a steep rise in road accidents. “It is tragic to note that annually, our country re-cords 13,000 cases of road accidents, contributing to an average of 3,000 deaths, 13,000 injuries, 6,000 of which are serious,” said president Mwai Ki-baki recently said.

Accidents on Kenyan roads have been attributed to reckless driving, use of poorly serviced vehicles, poor road conditions, laxity of law enforce-ment, vested interests and poor work-ing conditions for the crew. A big per-

centage of these accidents have been attributed to PSVs. It is for this reason that matatu stakeholders are reluctantly em-bracing the move.

While some matatu operators are whining about the new phase out, financial institu-tions and auto-dealers are anticipating a boom. This is partly because a large num-ber of matatus are second hand. “It costs between Kshs 800,000 to Kshs 1.2 million to buy a second hand 14-seater matatu,” Joseph Kimani who owns two matatus on Nairobi’s route 44 says. However, a sur-vey carried out by the Motortrader at sev-eral vehicle dealers established that the planned larger capcity automobiles will cost on the onwards of Kshs. 3 million.

Before the government announced the new measure, Gachagua Njogu, a com-mercial manager at CMC Motors says his firm on a monthly basis sold between 20 and 40 buses with a capacity of between 29 and 51 passengers. But the directive will help boost sales for the Company. “We are expecting to sell more Nissan Diesel and Eicher buses when the directive takes effect,” Njogu says. “We are in talks with financiers to help small investors upgrade to the high capacity buses.”

On his part, General Motors chief execu-tive officer Bill Lay says the directive will help vehicle assemblers in the country to increase production and sale of buses by at least 50 per cent this year. “We expect to increase our (GM) assembly capacity by 1,000 units by the end of next year (2011),” Lay projects.

Currently, statistics indicate that total sales of new buses stood at 1,368 in 2009,

accounting for a third of all bus regis-trations. Last year’s figure, which was at 1,151 for the 10 months to October, is expected to be higher than the 2009 total buoyed by the PSV matatu ban. November and last month saw a sharp increase in the number of new larger capacity PSVs.

According to Kenya Bus Service Limit-ed managing director Edwin Mukabana, auto assembling plants in the country are operating at less than 30 percent of their capacity because most Kenyans prefer buying second hand vehicles. “The directive by the ministry of trans-port is going to have an economic im-pact in the country,” Mukabana says. “It is going to see an increase in employ-ment to people in the auto business.”

Besides the projected vehicle sales, players are urging the ministry of trans-port to consider revising some of the current traffic rules. This is because of the impending immense investment required for one to operate a PSV. Ki-mutai wants the government to allow standing passengers in buses operat-ing short distances within Nairobi and other urban centers. “From a place like KNH (Kenyatta National Hospital) to the CBD (Central Business District) the bus can not exceed 35kph so why not allow passengers to stand during such trips just like people do in other developed parts of the world?” the Matatu Owners Association chairman suggests.

Hummer, Mercedes Benz S-Class and Range Rover sports are the answers I get after posing the ques-tion; which is the current status car in Kenya? However, the features of the Mercedes Benz E350 draw my atten-tion more than the aforementioned models.

A keen look at it from the steering wheel to its boot, its fuel consumption and power convinces me it is the cur-rent status car. Let us have a closer look at the E350, which is the C class’ larger brother, and has completely been revamped.

The latest 3.5 liter, E350 which has a sports look is an upgrade from earlier models; that is the 2006 Mercedes E350, 2007 Mercedes E350, 2008 Mercedes E350 and 2009 Mercedes

E350. The new E350 offers a new 268 horsepower with 259 ft. lbs of torque laden six cylinder engine with a seven speed automatic transmission.

This model is also equipped with Attention Assist, which is a drowsiness detection sys-tem. The Attention Assist is a safety system that measures over 70 different parameters and uses them to detect drowsiness or inattention on the part of the driver. This feature mostly works well at speeds of over 80km/h. This model is fitted with sensors that analyze driving behavior and detect any changes in it. “It detects for example if you are dozing or you change lanes without signaling,” says Josephine Njuguna, a motor vehicle consultant. “In this case, the steering wheel vibrates and in the process it wakes/alerts the driver.”

This model also has adaptive main beam assist, LED daytime driving lights, and an amazing nine air bags. In addition, the E350 has new brakes coupled with Brake Assist, which helps prevent collisions in bad weather conditions.

Mercedes has modified earlier models enabling the E350 to hit speeds of 60 miles

(96 kilometers) per hour in just 6.2 seconds.

The cargo opens at the push of a but-ton, the power liftgate makes it easy to load and unload cargo. The model holds the cargo in place; through a multitude of tie-downs hooks and cargo nets.

A survey carried out by the Mo-tor trader magazine found out that the E350 is the current car of choice because many motorists consider it a perfect blend of luxury and sportiness. However, analysts say buyers of this model have to be keen on the fuel they use because a bulk of fuel in the Kenyan market is of poor quality.

Exclusive of duty, shipping costs and any other levies, the Mercedes Benz E350 sells at an average of Kshs. 5 million.

Even though the three models of the Mercedes Benz E-Class were introduced in Kenya during the global financial crisis, their sales have been good. The three models available at DT Dobie’s showrooms are; 1796cc E200, 1796cc E250 and the 2996cc E300.

According to DT Dobie’s General Manager for Mercedes Sanjiv Shah, despite the recent move by the gov-ernment to stop buying Mercedes Benz, citing fuel consumption, the company’s sales have not been affected. “We are happy to report that in spite of government busi-ness being diverted to other makes, we are selling cars to a lot of the government officials as private sales,” Shah says. He attributes this to; “the fact is Mercedes Benz is still the preferred and recognized choice of many Kenyans as they have come to recognize quality, safety, innovation, reliability, good re-sale value, good service amongst many attributes.”

Since the introduction of the E-Class in Kenya in the last quarter of 2009, Shah says more than 100 units have been sold. “The sales have been growing month by

month,” he adds. “This model has been very well received in our market place with all categories of buyers ranging from private, corporates, dip-lomats and others including VIPs.”

DT Dobie has mainly been market-ing the Mercedes Benz E200, E250 and E300. According to Shah, the E300 has had the lion’s share of the sale. He attributes the high sales of this model to its features. “The (Mercedes Benz) E300 sales have been very strong and so much so that now nearly 50% of all E Class sold are E300. It is a tremendously good package,” the GM notes.

Inclusive of duty, DT Dobie has been selling the E300 which has a seven speed automatic engine with 231 horsepower at 74,000 euros, which is approximately Kshs. 8 mil-lion.

Shah notes that even though DT Dobie has been keen to introduce other (newer) models like the E350 and E500 that are on sale in the world market, the poor quality of fuel in the market (in Kenya) has held them back. “We are more than happy to sell other model variants in Kenya, however the restricting factor is the (poor) quality of the fuel available here, Shah observes. “The more powerful engine variants require a much higher quality of fuel which Ke-

nya is unable to provide consistently.”

Apart from the Mercedes Benz E-Class, the company has made tremendous strides in the sale of the heavy duty automobiles. According to DT Dobie’s General Manager in charge of Heavy Commercial Vehicles, Mike Duder, the company’s sales have been boosted by the ongoing infrastructure development in the country. Duder notes that the sale of the heavy com-mercial vehicles has shot up because of the road construction and the high investment in real estate (building development). Apart from selling the traditional trucks, he says the company has introduced two other models in response to the robust construction ongoing. “We (DT Dobie) recently intro-duced the heavy duty Actros ‘Intermix’ 10cm3 cement mixers from Germany and the 17cm3 Actros tipper which have both created a lot of interest,” the General Manager in charge of Heavy Commercial Vehicles says.

Going forward based on the constructions, he says the company expects high sales for these two new models. “We look forward to a new year with optimism with an increase in sales in a market segment which has not been traditionally catered for in Kenya,” Duder concludes.

Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evolution has always been known for its exceptional handling prowess. But the advanced electronic driver aids on the current generation vehicle - especially the company’s superb Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system - have taken the Evolution’s road hugging maneuverability to an astonishingly high level.

The all new Subaru STI Unveiled

Subaru introduced the new 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX models, which now use a wide-body design

like the brand’s iconic WRX STI performance flagship model. The wider body designs give the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX an aggressive road presence and also allow wider track dimensions.

An approximately 1.5-inch increase in front and rear track, firmer rear

265-hp turbocharged/intercooled 2.5-liter 4-cyl. SUBARU-BOXER® engine teamed with a 5-speed manual transmission. This highly responsive engine produces 244 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm.

The WRX has been the focus of continuous improvement since its introduction. Most recently, the 2009 model received the 265-hp engine and a significant chassis tuning upgrade. For 2010, the new Limited trim lines expanded the WRX model’s appeal to a broader range of driving enthusiasts. The 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX uses the Continuous

subframe bushings and wider 17-inch wheels and tires deliver improved grip in the 2011 WRX. The standard wheels are now 17 x 8-in. vs. 17 x 7-in. in the 2010 model, and tire size is now 235/45R17 vs. 225/45R17.

AWD version of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. A viscous coupling locking center differential nominally distributes torque 50:50. Should slippage occur, this system transfers more power to the wheels with the best traction.

The Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) stability and traction control system is standard. Incline Start Assist, featured on all Impreza models equipped with a manual transmission, can momentarily prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when being driven away from a stop on an incline.

Both the Subaru Impreza WRX 5-door model and 4-door model now feature a wide-body design for 2011 similar to that of the WRX STI, underscoring the high-performance character of both models . The new design is based on a “wide and low” concept and gives both cars an aggressive street presence. The design also maintains a consistent flow from front to rear bumper, creating a distinctive identity and a sense of stability in the vehicles.

Significantly, curb weight for the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX models increases by just 33 pounds over the “original body” 2010 models, preserving their powerful acceleration performance.

In front, the 2011 WRX models feature sharpened bumper corners and wider, blacked-out fog lamp nacelles to accentuate the “wide and low” profile. A jutting lip spoiler with three-dimensional detailing emphasizes the cars’ sporty intent. The newly designed front grille with black base and blacked-out Subaru wing highlights the headlights’ shape to give the entire front end a more powerful appearance, accentuated by larger grille and bumper intake openings.

For the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX 4-door model, the wider fenders are stretched out on the side more than the tail lamps, accentuating a look of stability. The new design details contribute to an improved drag coefficient.

Sporty, Spacious and Versatile Interior

In the WRX models, exclusive carbon black checkered upholstery accented by red stitching sets the tone for the sporty interior. The compact layout of the double-wishbone rear suspension helps to minimize intrusion into the cargo area, providing a wide and deep luggage compartment. In the 5-door, the wide and flat load floor can accommodate two Tour-size golf bags with the rear seat backs in the upright position. In the 4-door, which is 6.5-inches longer than the 5-door, the trunk can accommodate three Tour-size golf bags. A 60/40-split folding rear seat further boosts cargo capacity and convenience in both models and the 4-door also features a rear seat fold-down center armrest.

All Subaru Impreza WRX models are equipped with standard aluminum-alloy pedal covers and driver’s footrest. Performance-design front seats integrate the backrest and head restraint into a single structure. As a sporty accent, the instrument panel electroluminescent gauges use indicator needles that sweep the

gauge faces upon engine startup.The standard tilt and telescopic

steering wheel is a three-spoke, leather-wrapped design and features control switches for Bluetooth® hands-free phone function. A new AM/FM stereo with single-disc CD player features Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free calling, iPod control capability, a USB port, 3.5mm aux. input jack and has XM/SIRIUS satellite radio capability (subscription is extra). An available navigation system integrates a vehicle information center and Bluetooth hands-free calling.

Proven Subaru Safety

The Impreza models are built around the Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame body structure with front and rear crumple zones. This design has been proven in Subaru models for over a decade to provide outstanding crash protection. represented in last month’s Safari-com Inter Media Rally Challenge that was held at the Jamhuri Race Track in Nairobi. Raphael Karanja, who is a marketer at Royal Media Services was among those who participated in the race. Karanja who had at the start of the race expressed optimism at winning the race give it his best before bowing out at the semi-finals level. However, he is his compatriot, Timothy Kiprono, who brought honor to the Royal Media Services’ family. Kiprono who works for Hot 96, col-lected the finalists award after finish-ing the race placed fifth overall.

In the men’s category, the 2009’s winner, Johnson Lagat of Kenya Television Network (KTN) who took the bragging rights again after finish-ing first both in the Men’s category as well as taking home the overall winner award. He was followed by Kass FM’s Sikey.

After winning the 2009 edition of the media rally, Lagat and his col-league Saddique Shabaan were sponsored to participate in the 58th edition of the KCB Safari Rally, one of the world’s toughest competi-tions. Buoyed sponsorship from Ben Muchemi of Kenya Rally Team, the duo participated in the race riding the Subaru Imprezza Version 6. Speak-ing to Motortrader, after winning last month’s Inter Media Rally, Lagat ex-pressed optimism of participating in this year’s national safari rally and finishing in a good position.

In the lady’s category, it was a po-dium sweep for Kenya Broadcast-ing Corporation (KBC) participants. (KBC) News anchor Pauline Shegu led her compatriots, consisting the weather-girl and upcoming race driv-er Irene Muchuma and last year’s

(lady’s) winner Sabina Chege to a 1-2-3 finish in this category. Pauline who has participated in the race for several years was placed seventh overall. “My dream is to win the race one of this fine years so that I get to be sponsored to race in the national race,” she told Motortrader at the end of the two-day event. “I am going to train harder this year so that I can achieve this dream.” During last month’s media rally, KBC won the overall title consisting both Men and Women.

However, it is KTN’s Lagat who was the overall winner and is hope-ful of securing sponsorship to race at this year’s Kenya National Rally Championship Series that is ex-pected to kick off in March.

Stakeholders who spoke to the Motortrader said they were con-sidering sponsoring another final-ist at this year’s race since Lagat had been offered the chance at last year’s Kenya National Rally Cham-pionship Series. “However, we are yet to settle on who will be spon-sored,” said a representative from one the sponsors of last month’s Inter Media Rally, who requested anonymity.

Last month’s Inter Media Rally was sponsored by among others Hot 96 and Safaricom. At the end of the two-day event, Safaricom was awarded for being the best overall sponsor.

The Inter Media Rally brings to-gether participants from media sta-tions in the country in a competi-tion that besides according one of them a chance to participate in the National Rally Championship also aims at making journalists under-stand and appreciate Rallying as a sport.
