What is Motivation?Motivation is a Latin word, which means to move
It is the willingness of an individual to respond to organizational
requirements
It is a process by which a persons efforts are energized, directed and
sustained towards attaining the goal.

Characteristics of Motivation Unending process: human wants keep changing & increasing
A psychological concept: deals with the human mind
Whole individual is motivated: as it is based on psychology of theindividual
Motivation may be financial or non-financial: Financial includesincreasing wages, allowance, bonus, perquisites etc.
Motivation can be positive or negative: positive motivationmeans use of incentives - financial or non-financial. Egs. ofpositive motivation: confirmation, pay rise, praise etc. Negativemotivation means emphasizing penalties. It is based on force offear. Eg. demotion, termination

Extrinsic and intrinsic:
Extrinsic motivation is available only after completion of the job.
Eg. increase in wages, rest periods, holidays etc.
Intrinsic motivation is available at the time of performance of a job.Eg. praise, recognition, delegation of authority & responsibility
