First SciFair (1998-2000): twelve teens at a rural high school came "inworld" to study bioengineering of crops, and to be introduced to a new online digital medium. Working with two mentors at Cornell, they designed and built the Tomato Islands with virtual greenhouses, knowledge spaces for what they learned about the crop's biodiversity, cultural needs, history, biogeography, and modern production.
