Jesus called to his friend from the dead, “Lazarus, come out!” It is the same call our Lord makes to us unceasingly: “Come out!” Jesus calls us from our tomb of doubt and unbelief, from the darkness of our fear and anxieties; from the depths of our weaknesses and lack of hope. Christian stewards pray for an open heart, so that they may hear the voice of the Lord, heed the continuous call to come away from their former way of living and reprioritize their lives in the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma MUERTO OTRA VEZ "Lázaro, ¡sal!" Jesús con voz fuerte da la orden y un amigo muy querido se despierta de la muerte. Aquellos de nosotros que hemos perdido a seres queridos podríamos desear que Jesús llamara a nuestros difuntos desde sus tumbas y les devolviera la vida también, y que sigan estando un poco más de tiempo acompañándonos. Considera, sin embargo, que Marta y María tuvieron que entristecerse por su hermano no una sino dos veces. El milagro que le devuelve la vida a Lázaro no le evitó que volviera a morir. Siendo tan difícil la muerte de Lázaro, Jesús tiene un plan misericordioso para nosotros: no revivir incontablemente, sino la verdadera resurrección. A diferencia de Lázaro, nosotros moriremos sólo una vez, y ese es un precio pequeño por la recompensa extraordinaria que Jesús planificó para cada uno de nosotros. Jesús es "la resurrección y la vida". Si creemos en él, podemos vivir por siempre en la gloria, en cuerpos resucitados libres de dolor y discapacidades.

El profeta Ezequiel describe la promesa de Dios, poner el mismo espíritu de Dios dentro de cada uno de nosotros para que vivamos. "Yo lo he prometido, y lo afirmo, dice el Señor". Today’s Scripture Reflection

One of the struggles we face from the moment we can think critically is what might be called “the mystery of life.” Particularly during this Lenten season this is something on which we need to meditate. Passion Sunday is next weekend and Easter is only two weeks away. We probably have at least a basic understanding that what we are really preparing for is Resurrection. The readings on this Fifth Sunday address Resurrection and call us to hear and consider what it means. St. Paul certainly provides us thoughts on Resurrection in the Second Reading from his letter to the Romans when he says, “If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit dwelling in you.” Is the Spirit dwelling within us? What have we done during this Lent to bring that Spirit to life? Those are questions we must ask always but especially at this time. Our First Reading comes to us from the prophet Ezekiel. Ezekiel the person has fascinated scholars for centuries. He was unique in many ways. In his writings he tended to use symbols and allegory more than the other prophets. His visions were striking and distinctive as well. Today’s reading includes one of those visions and a clearly apparent reference to the concept of resurrection. God says in today’s reading “O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them,” a definite allusion to resurrection. Two verses later God says, “I will put my spirit in you that you may live.” This is the same Spirit of course St. Paul addresses in the Second Reading. It is the Spirit which is at the heart of our search and our endeavors to prepare for resurrection, both that of Jesus on Easter and our own. This all has to do with life, not death. It is this life which should give us hope. That is what we are truly seeking — new life and hope. Are we addressing the lifeless and hopeless characteristics of our life? Our calling is to give life. Living as good stewards is one of the ways that we can do that. We have already begun our reflection on St. Paul’s words in the Second Reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans. As Paul says basically if the Spirit is within us, we have life. The Spirit is in everyone, but we need to allow it to be reflected in how we live. If the Spirit is leading us to be more like the Lord, then it is at work in our hearts. We are called to be disciples and to be in Christ. However, Paul assures us that Christ is within us also. We must let Him show forth and shine. With that commitment we renew and reflect that hope which resurrection promises. We hear the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead in the Gospel Reading from St. John. This is a reminder to us that resurrection is ongoing. The idea of dying and rising is something we all need to do every day. Much of this has to do with relationships, our relationship with God, with those close to us, and with all those with whom we may come in contact. Now during Lent is a time when we need to give these relationships a particular prominence. We have no idea of what rising again will be. We are given some hints in Holy Scripture, but we are also reminded that it is beyond our very understanding. There is another facet of Lazarus being raised from the dead which is notable during our Lenten preparations and our striving for resurrection. When Lazarus emerges from the tomb, he is “tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth.” Are we bound in some ways? Are what binds us things which we should now be trying to free ourselves from? In these final days of Lent we still have time to judge what it is that keeps us from finding the new life offered by Christ. Only Jesus can give us this new life. The Lord reminds us in today’s Gospel, “…if you believe, you will see the glory of God.” Hope is there for us, but we must seize it. Do you ever think about how you experience the cross of Jesus Christ? Do you ever think about the power of that cross in your daily life? Is the cross even relevant to your life? It is to stewards of the Lord, who recognize the hope Christ brings through the gift of his cross. They acknowledge that for them, the cross is their only hope.

Being good stewards of our life in Christ is not easy, but to embrace the cross is not only countercultural, it seems absurd. Then again, we cannot avoid what Jesus said to his disciples: “If you wish to come after me you must deny yourself and take up your cross daily and follow me. For if you wish to save your life, you will lose it; but if you lose your life for my sake you will save it” (Luke 9:23-24).

The cross is more readily embraced by people of faith who suffer, are poor, broken, or are the victims of such things as violence, oppression or natural disasters. They see the cross as the hope that no matter what has happened to them, God will see them through. The Father did it for Jesus who hung on the cross, so surely their sufferings will be redeemed by Jesus’ sufferings.

Where people possess much material abundance, comfort and leisure, however, there is a tendency to de-emphasize the cross, to draw away from it. They can’t touch it or feel it so they wish to “save” their lives by looking to other things: power, wealth, fame, relevance, being the center of attention. What is preached about the cross from the pulpit sounds good, but in reality something more tangible is desired.

Christ emptied himself completely in humble obedience, allowing himself to suffer and die out of compassion for the world (Philippians 2:6-11). Good stewards follow his example and work day-to-day to empty themselves and live compassionately; most noticeably by sharing their lives with others.

As we approach the climax of our liturgical year, the Easter triduum, let us ask the Holy Spirit for an even deeper awareness of the cross in our lives. Let us find hope in the cross and pray that as we embrace it, we too will experience in a special way the joy of new life in the risen Lord.

Salubong Mass on Easter Sunday at 5:30 AM Salubong (Tagalog for “meeting”) is a jubilant welcome of Filipinos to Easter Sunday. It is a tradition in Philippines depicting Christ who after rising from the dead, come to meet his mother Virgin Mary. The ceremony will begin at dawn and by proceeding the images in two different routes. Males in the community, in a procession of joyful celebration, accompany the image of Jesus and females in a somber procession of mourning, accompany the image of the sorrowful mother. They arrive at a designated meeting place, usually in front of the church, where a little girl dressed as an angel removes the black mourning veil from the statue of Mary. The ceremony ends in Eucharistic Celebration. All are welcome.

National Crime Victims’ Rights Week April 2-8, 2017 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) was established in 1981 to inspire the community, raise awareness of victims’ rights, and address unmet needs. Sadly, the needs of many crime victims and survivors, including some who worship in our faith community, remain unaddressed and many feel abandoned by our Church. YOUR TICKET PURCHASE WILL HELP SUPPORT THE HEALTH MINISTRY PROGRAM AT MHT As many of you know, we provide monthly blood pressure and blood glucose checks to parishioners. We used to be a part of O’Connor Hospital’s Parish Nurse Program, sadly the program was eliminated in 2010. We now provide the following services for the parishioners:

Over 200 monthly blood pressure and blood sugar screenings (that’s 100 people we screen)

Zumba Classes twice weekly

Flu vaccinations in collaboration with Walgreens Pharmacy (once a year)

Referrals to local Community Clinics for uninsured, under-insured or undocumented parishioners

Your donation will provide the supplies we use monthly. Each month we need approximately 100 blood glucose strips. The average cost of a vial of 50 Accu-check strips is $75.00. In addition to the blood glucose strips, we need lancets, bandaids, cotton balls, gloves and alcohol swabs.

We hope you will consider participating in our Fundraiser, “A Day at the Races”. DONATIONS ARE ALSO GREATLY APPRECIATED.
