Orsoni’s “color library”, a timeless piece of art that preserves almost 3,000 mosaics of different tones and shades was displayed for the first time at the Universal Exhibition in Paris back in 1889, where Antoni Gaudí, the Spanish architect was amazed with its beauty.

Since then, Gaudí decided to use Orsoni mosaics in the construction of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain.

Creative excellence is found in Orsoni, which still uses the same ancient process of glass making.

Basilica San MarcoVenice, Italy

Since its beginning in 1888, Orsoni has manufactured mosaics for the renovation of the Basilica; between 1924 and 1926 it supplied more than 10,000 kgs of enamels and 1,000 ancient gold plates. The method to produce the gold that decorates 8,000 m2 was derived from the Roman technique: A 24K gold leaf is laid between a classic blown glass, which is cut by hand into square shapes with supporting glass. These two layers protect the gold from heat during the pouring stage. As a final step, firing the material produces the “aging effect”.

L’effetto anticato viene ottenuto come ultimo passaggio nella fornace.

The Sky Over Nine ColumnsVenice, Italy - Temporary Exhibition

The piece of art was exhibited at San Giorgo Island in Venice in 2014 by the German artist Heinz Mack, in collaboration with the Giorgio Cini Foundation. The Nine Columns are symmetric, 7 m high and decorated with 24K gold mosaic. Each gold leaf comes from a carat booklet that contains 25 loose sheets with a dimension of 8 x 8 cm, separated by a special paper treated with white powder. To obtain a unique quality, even in today’s world, the last step of the process is still done by hand.

Sagrada FamiliaBarcelona, Spain

Since 1926, Orsoni has supplied uncut enamels for the decoration of the irregular shapes, blending bright colors and delicate structures with the expressive, decorative sculpture of Gaudì. Still today, Orsoni is manufacturing special glass tiles suitable for the new assembly methods to mount the decors of the remaining steeples still to be built. The tesserae is placed on the cypress, the facade of the Nativity, the pinnacle and on the towers. Each enamel has its own name like “scorzetta” or “becco di merlo”.
