Chapel echoes November 3, 2013 / Issue 38 Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, Inc.
Praise the Lord! The Lord God created the whole world and everything in it. We
are blessed because the Lord gave us life. We live, work, and play in the world that the
Lord created. We are thankful for God’s generosity to us. Our thankfulness compels us
to faithfully live by the teaching of the Lord and to care for all of his creation. The Bible
teaches us that we worship God by giving our tithe and offerings.
How did you learned to give tithes and offering to the Lord? I remember attending
worship as a small child with my grandparents and my “Pop” giving me a shiny quarter
to put in the offering plate as it was passed down the pew. Then I remember learning
about tithing when I was in college. When I received a paycheck, I wrote my tithe check
and mailed it to my home church using the offering envelopes provided by them. When
Krista and I attended pre-marriage counseling, the pastor taught us that the first ten
percent of our income was for the tithe to our local church and that offerings were gifts
given over and beyond our tithe. Reverend Allred encouraged us to set apart an
additional percentage of our income to use for these offerings to other worthy charitable
causes. I remember my bride Krista and I walking on a beach making a decision
together to adopt this teaching into our new life together.
How did you teach your children about personal money management? When our
children were in kindergarten, my wife and I began intentionally teaching then about the
use of money. We started with a small allowance each week and taught them about
tithing, saving, and spending. We collected and decorated peanut butter jars to be three
different types of “accounts” – an emergency fund, a long-term savings, and a spending
jar. At first we gave them a dollar’s worth of dimes. It was an easy visual for them with
ten dimes lined up on the dining room table with their “account jars”. The first dime
belonged to the Lord as it was a tithe (a tenth part/ten percent). It was given to the
church through the Sunday offering plate. The second dime was to be place in to the
emergency fund, just in case an emergency happens unexpectedly like when an
expensive bowl was dropped and shattered in a store. The remaining eight dimes were
split between the other two jars. Four in to the long-term savings account jar to be used
on something big like spending money on a trip or a large expensive toy. The other four
were put into the spending jar that they could spend on whatever they chose – a toy,
candy, or other small item. We have continued these lessons throughout their years as
they and their allowance amounts have grown. We continue to talk about spending
from which jar is appropriate when a decision about spending has to be made.
Our Financial Commitment Sunday is this week in worship. I pray you have been
considering your thankfulness to God for the church called Morris Chapel. I encourage
you to grow in your giving toward tithing by taking a “step up” this next year,
Faithfully yours,
Pastor Dan Lyons

Thanks to our Church Family... I just want to say Thank You, Thank You, Thank you for doing a beautiful job
on our Church Bazaar on October 26th. Your talents and your time you gave...it
was amazing! We could not have done it with out Bill and Patricia Gordon
growing our wonderful vegetables and fruits and all the other work they contrib-
uted. A special thanks to the men that gave a lot of their time, and every one that
helped in some way and did something to make the day so special.
It is a great pleasure to be a part of this Church Family. I love
you all and I enjoy the time I spend working with you!
