More to Life.PASTOR’S MESSAGE

kingwoodumc.org FEB 2018- APR 2018Page 2

FROM THE SENIOR PASTORDear Church,Well, 2017 is in the books! Quite literally for the church. Every year we are required to give an annual year-end report to the Annual Conference and the denomination. We have to account for every penny and every person…every year. Although this is a tedious process every year (a special thank you to the staff that help with this), I find it to be a helpful process as it gives a snap shot of the year in review according to the numbers. I like to share this information with the congregation on an annual basis as well…so here it is, the year in review by the numbers…at least some of them:

During 2017 we received 168 new members. Our total membership stands at 4,625.

Our average weekly worship attendance was 1,281, down from 1302 in 2016.

We offered 196 different classes and groups for discipleship through the course of 2017.

We had over 2300 members involved in community mission and service.

We estimate that we served over 35,000 people in various outreach ministries.

Our receipts to the operating budget this past year were $2,905,000.

Our expenses from the operating budget totaled $2,876,000.

In 2016 our building debt was $6,777,125. In 2017 we were able to reduce the debt to $5,582,000!

And, we still have two years to collect on our current Rising Up campaign.

We received over $82,000 for Harvey Relief efforts.

Our total expenses for the year for the budget and debt service was $4,374,000.

A significant amount of work has now gone into planning our operating budget for 2018. As you can imagine the challenge of managing our finances in a way that allows us to continue to fund our ministries while paying off our debt leads to some very important discussion. I am one who believes that a budget is a moral document in that it reveals a person or institutions priorities. In the coming year, we are anticipating receipts of $2,949,000 (a conservative estimate) against an approved budget of $2,933,000. It is important that we realize in addition to this operating budget we gave an additional $560,330 to support missions/ministries beyond the budget this past year. You are an extremely generous congregation and I commend you for that.

For those of you whose eyes are glazed over because of all the numbers (like my wife, Penny), the long and the short of it is: You are making an incredible impact for the kingdom of God because of your generosity and service! Individual lives, our local community, and the world are touched by your faithfulness to Christ.

I can’t wait to see what God will continue to do among us and through us in 2018!

Leaning Forward,

Pastor Scott

GRIEFSHARE CLASSES OFFERED THIS SPRINGOne of the ways Kingwood United Methodist Church ministers to those who have experienced the death of a loved one is to offer a support group with an emphasis on growing from mourning to joy. This group is called GriefShare, and is a 12-week journey for hope and healing. KUMC has offered this program for many years and we have found it to be helpful for those who are grieving a loss. We will offer the program once again starting Monday, January 22nd through Monday, April 16th. There will be a morning class 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., and an evening class from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Both classes will be held in Building C, Room E-204. If you plan to attend one of these classes, or would like more information about this program, please contact Donna Smith at 281-358-2137 or [email protected].

The Gathering Place meets the second Friday of every month starting February 9th from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Each month has a theme with decorations, crafts, entertainment, food and fellowship. If you would like to bring someone, attend yourself, or find out more information about this ministry, please contact Nan Johnston at (713) 854-0061.

JOURNEY GROUPS

SECOND FAMILY CARE TEAM

Young Moms Bible Study welcomes moms of newborn through school-aged children. We enjoy fellowship through food, laughter, tears, and prayers, while providing support and encouragement to each other. Newborns are always welcome in our study until you are ready to try the nursery. We will meet you wherever you are in your spiritual journey, even if this is your first study. We begin a new study in mid-January in Room E-200/201 and you are still welcome. We meet Wednesday mornings at 9:00-9:30 a.m. for breakfast fellowship and class at 9:30–11:30 a.m. Child care is available with registration. To register for this class, or for more information, please contact Melinda Dodd at [email protected] or at 281-797-7334.

YOUNG MOMSBIBLE STUDY

Second Family Care Team is looking for volunteers to share compassion, love, and grace to individuals within our congregation and in our community who have been diagnosed with terminal or chronic illnesses, feel isolated and lonely and are homebound due to physical restrictions, and/or family caregivers who take on many responsibilities to care for loved ones. Working through pastoral care and in partnership with CarePartners, volunteers visit people who are ill or lonely, provide an occasional meal, do light chores, help with errands and transportation, and/or share a devotional and friendship. KUMC’s Second Family Care Team members are like old-fashion neighbors. If you are interested in volunteering for this ministry, or are in need of this type of assistance, please contact Donna Smith at (281) 358-2137, Ext. 1905 or at [email protected].

Do you ever think “I want more wholeness and meaning in my life”, or “I want a deeper relationship with God and those I love”? Do you ever feel you “don’t measure up”, or you have to be perfect to be fully used by God? A Journey Group can be a guide to discover and help make changes toward a full life by providing an opportunity for participants (usually 4-7) to share experiences guided by trained facilitators. Biblical concepts, personal homework, and group exercises frame the small group time. Participants learn to respond in ways that lead to growth. Groups meet for 9 sessions. Contact Donna Smith if you would like to attend or have any questions [email protected] or 281-358-2137, Ext. 1905.

What IF we followed God with perseverance instead of insecurity? At IF:Gathering 2018, we will look at one of Paul’s letters to Timothy as Paul reminded Timothy of the power and responsibility of sharing the gospel. We want to give God away in the very places He’s put us, so we’re going to gather for the purpose of remembering why following God and making disciples matters. We all get tired. We all wonder if what we’re doing matters, so IF:Gathering 2018 will be the reminder and the celebration that the work we’re doing to share the gospel on the earth is worth it and God DOES move through the little things that nobody sees. Join us February 9th 6:00 p.m.- 9:00p.m.,and February 10th 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. in E200/201. Register online at https://register.ifgathering.com/event/ifkingwood-united-methodist-church by February 9th.

Kairos, a Greek word meaning “God’s special time”, is a lay-led Christian ministry (similar to Walk to Emmaus) designed to introduce God’s love, grace, and forgiveness in the prison setting. It starts with a 3 ½ day weekend event during which 42 inmates witness Christ’s love firsthand through volunteers. For many participants it is a life-changing experience and for others it is a time of spiritual renewal. After the weekend, the participants are assigned to small groups, which are the heart of the Kairos ministry, that meet within the institution. Kairos weekend is held in men’s prisons twice a year at the Polunsky, Hightower, Terrell, and Walls units. That’s over 300 incarcerated men! Each event takes approximately 50 volunteers to serve on inside and outside teams and costs can reach nearly $14,000 per weekend, covered mostly by fees paid by the volunteers. Please consider a mission offering for “Kairos” any time in February to help with the cost of this life changing event for the “men in white.” For more information about getting involved as a Kairos volunteer, contact Chris Harrison at [email protected]

MARCH MISSIONS OFFERINGUnited Methodist Action Reach-Out Mission by Youth is known as U.M. ARMY.U.M. ARMY’s mission is “To provide Christ-centered quality youth work camps that serve people in need and promote spiritual growth and leadership development in youth.” It is an opportunity for youth, college students and adults to experience Christian growth through mission, worship and fellowship. Participants combine their strengths to meet home repair and maintenance needs of those unable to help themselves.U.M. ARMY is for high school students who have completed at least their freshman year. Younger students are encouraged to participate in FLIPt, which is a similar program designed for junior high students. This summer we will be offering two UM ARMY camps, with each camp costing about $30,000. Student fees do not cover the full cost and we are hoping to raise at least $12,000 to cover the expected shortfall. Donations made during the March Communion Rail Offering will help buy building supplies, paint, and tools to allow our youth make a difference in the lives of their clients. Eligible students will also be able to apply for scholarships that will allow them to participate.

APRIL MISSIONS OFFERINGMission Northeast serves the needy in an area covering over 800 square miles, providing programs and services at no cost, thanks to the support of a generous community. Mission Northeast’s mission statement is “transforming our community, one life at a time through the love of Jesus Christ.”The April Communion Offering will be for a new program, Furnishings Provision, something that many of us can relate to after Hurricane Harvey. Many families lost everything in the August floods; in particular, beds, mattresses, bedding, and kitchen supplies. What a joy it is to provide a new bed and bedding! We also assist families who have suffered other losses, such as a fire or leaving a domestic violence situation. Mission Northeast is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, faith based social services organization. Please help us provide a basic necessity for someone who will see Christ’s love in this simple, but wonderful way.

THANK YOU, FROM TANZANIA MEDICAL MISSION TEAMFor eight days in late October and early November 2017, a Medical team from KUMC held a free Medical clinic for the poor on the grounds of ‘Joy in the Harvest’ Mission in Kigoma, Tanzania, Africa. On behalf of the Tanzanian Medical Mission team we would like to thank KUMC for making a huge impact for the Lord on that trip. The team of 21, which included four American doctors, and two African doctors, saw approximately 1800 sick and poor Africans. Illnesses were diagnosed and treated that are only found in textbooks in the U.S. A large number of patients were diagnosed with surgical and chronic illnesses that will needed follow-up, and were sent elsewhere in Tanzania for more treatment funded by your generous donations. Our own Hal and Sue Hoege, attend to these patients after we go home as part of their ministry with Joy in the Harvest.Medicine opened the door for people to experience Jesus. About 70% of the people were Muslim or tribal religions. We saw all in the name of Jesus Christ. Besides praying with each patient, there were countless people who requested to visit with the Christian pastors on the team. Our host missionary, Lowell Wertz, has made the statement that the four medical mission trips this church has sponsored at Joy in the Harvest have had the greatest impact on his ministry.Strengthened and guided by the Holy Spirit, each of us had moving encounters as we served the least and the lost. We will keep with us forever the faces of the ill we treated and the smiles of the grateful when they were headed home. From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank you for giving generously so that lives could be changed in Tanzania. The team is grateful to you for sending us to be ambassadors for Christ from this body of Christ.Thank you KUMC for impacting Tanzania, Africa with the light of Jesus Christ!

Purvis Harper, Medical Team leader
