FROM THE MEMBERSHIP OFFICEWhat a difference a year can make! This spring has been crazy. It’s not evenMay yet but with all the great weather we’ve been busy, busy, busy. Last yearat this time we were struggling to get the golf course back in shape. Theaftermath of the flood combined with the winter winds certainly had taken itstoll on the golf course. This year we’ve been blessed with some great earlyseason weather which has combined with all the remedial work Ian and hiscrew did last year to reward us with with some of the best early conditions I canremember. The course is looking and playing great. I played my first round ofthe year yesterday (April 22nd) and was blown away by what great shape thecourse is in. And, I can’t tell you how rewarding it is to have guest after guest

rave about it as well. Please, if you have not been out to play yet make it a priority to get heresoon. We’re all looking forward to seeing you!I have to tell you how excited I am about all the little changes going on around the Club as well. Our new Head Pro, Cameron Morton, has jumped in with both feet and is trying to get thingsready for the season while accommodating all the early season activity as well. He’s beenanalyzing how we’ve been doing things and while trying not to shake things up too much he isworking to streamline things for you and the Golf Shop staff so they can concentrate onenhancing all your Club experiences. The new online event and tournament registration isjust one of those small changes that is already a big hit.Cameron’s spent a lot of time picking out and ordering new merchandise for the Shop andmuch of it should be arriving soon. Our goal is to have a wide variety of in-stock items whileat the same time encouraging you to have us special order ANYTHING you see somewhereelse that you want. And, our competitive prices, combined with our low sales tax rate (4% lessthan anywhere else) will mean that you should always pay less here than anywhere else.I’m also happy to report that I have received rave reviews from a number of members whohave begun taking lessons from Cameron. He really enjoys teaching and will be encouragingall of you to take some lessons or participate in the clinics he has planned for this season. Hisphilosophy, and I think we all would agree, is that the better you play the more fun you have. But Cameron and Mike can’t do it all so I am especially excited that both Jim Phillips andBecky Clark will be back teaching here as well. Lessons with any of the pros can be arrangedthrough the Golf Shop.We have a number of events coming your way and I hope many of you will participate in them. The annual ABCD Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 2 and Mother’s Day brunch isSunday, May 10th. As you can see it is getting to be the busy season around the Club and that’sjust the way we like it! There’s still room in the ABCD and a few spots are left for Mother’sDay so sign up if you haven’t already. Also, Men’s League can always use some names for the“sub” list so give the Golf Shop at ext. 8 a call if you can be a sub this season.Ladies, if you’re interested in playing some golf I’m sure we’ve got a good fit for you. We havea Tuesday morning 18 hole group that is exploring other days/afternoons that might work foryou as well. We have a 9 hole group that plays Thursday mornings as well as Tuesday andThursday evenings and they are always looking for more ways to get you involved if you desire.

The Board of Advisors met on Tuesday, April 14th, with almost all Board memberspresent. Much was discussed during the two hour session most of it revolvingaround the Golf Shop transition, upcoming course maintenance items and theseason ahead. It was noted that while the great weather was helping the golfcourse and enticing many members out to the Club all the early activity poses itsown challenges as much of our staffing in all departments is seasonal and noneof those folks are around until sometime in May.

The Golf Shop transition, while largely complete is still a work in process and will continue to befor months to come. With the Club taking over all the operations, some of the staff that wasretained (Mike Zarlengo, Johnie Romero and Laura Phillips) had to migrate to the Club’s payrollwhile at the time additional permanent and summer staff had to be hired. All of the vendoraccounts (dozens of them) had to be established which required credit applications and otherpaperwork and all of the receivables that they generate are now being processed in-house. Oncethose accounts were opened Cameron met with all of the various reps, both old and new, and2015 merchandise was chosen for delivery throughout the season. Cameron also reached out toJim Phillips and Becky Clark who have agreed to teach here at the Club and to help withnumerous clinics he has planned. At the same time we are trying to refine many of ouroperations to add ease and efficiency for members and staff alike. The thought being, if we canplan farther ahead and make the administrative functions easier then more personal time canbe spent with each member. On the golf course side things were already in full swing despite what the calendar said.Aeration of the tees and approaches went well and the greens aeration and recovery was aidedby the use of our new vibratory rollers. Now we only have the fairways left to finish. The ropeson #3 were going to be taken down as soon that fairway is aerated. Things were being quicklysprayed (thanks to our new sprayer) to prevent the usual onslaught of dandelions all around thecourse while greens received applications to reduce poa seedheads as well as wetting agents tohelp aide moisture absorption and retention. We were planning to get off the driving rangeartificial turf a week or two earlier this year with April 24th as the target date. Bunker mainte-nance was under way and the rehab work on #16 was progressing with no definitive completiondate set yet. The water feature was fired up just before Easter and has been functioning well. The area to the south and west of the practice putting green had been prepared for somewildflower planting and we are anxious to see that develop over time. The water and icemachine is scheduled to be back towards Mother’s Day (when the risk of freezing is gone) andnew ball washers and trash cans will be installed on permanent posts at many of the tees soon. All in all the golf course was shaping up great.Other items discussed were the 18 new members we’ve welcomed already this season with thehope that many more will follow. We’re still waiting for our Golf Bikes, we are looking into FlingGolf (www.Flinggolf.com), the “frost line” is no longer being used and we, like many otherbusinesses and Clubs are having a harder time hiring this year. If you hear of any cooks orgrounds crew folks looking for permanent or seasonal work, please let us know.

May history trivia questionNo one attempted to answer last month’s Trivia Question despite the availability of theanswer. The question was, “Who were the golfers on CU’s Men’s Golf Team in 1968 whenthey won their only Big Eight Championship here at Lake Valley?” The answer will remaina mystery except to those who take a look at the picture on display in the downstairs’ loungearea. As for this month’s question, what is the name of the fictional golf course looselybased on Lake Valley that Rick Reilly wrote about in “Missing Links”?

Spring has come early this year, and it’s been great seeing so many of you out enjoying thegreat early season course conditions. Ian, Sam and their crew have been doing a great jobwith the limited “preseason” staff we have and part of that is due to some of the equipmentwe were able to purchase last fall. The new sprayer and vibratory greens roller have addedgreatly to our efficiency and have been instrumental in the early green up and turf condi-tioning (not to mention, warmer temps and plenty of moisture). These purchases are just asmall part of what your dues pay for especially as our Club, unlike almost all others, do notand cannot assess for operational shortages or capital replacements or improvements.

It is essential that every year that we raise enough revenue through dues, guest fees, cartfees, outside event fees, food and beverage income and now Golf Shop sales, etc. to cover allof the costs necessary to provide you with the experiences you desire and deserve. You canprobably imagine all that they entail including wages and salaries, water, gas, oil, propertytaxes, insurance, fertilizers, debt service, etc., etc., as we maintain the course and grounds, buildings and facilities, operate the Grill and Golf Shop and attempt to provide a reasonablereturn to the Club owners while at the same time trying to put enough away to makeimprovements, replace items that wear out or become obsolete, etc.

In order to try and accomplish all this while at the same time remaining committed to ourmission of trying to keep all our fees as reasonable as possible we will be raising dues inevery category 3.5% this year.

We sincerely appreciate and thank you for your continued support of the Club and hope youunderstand the need for this increase.

The new dues structure which will be reflected on your next statement is as follows:

Individual: $319Family: $372Young Exec. Ind: $282Yong Exec. Family: $325Diamond Senior: $223

In case you have not noticed, we are beginning to accumulate a nicecollection of golf themed books in the lounge outside the locker rooms

downstairs. These books are available for you to take home, read andreturn when you are done with them. There are also a number of books(mostly mysteries) on tape or CD available for use on your next drivingtrip. If you have books or tapes you would like to donate to the library,

please bring them in and drop them off with Allie in the Business Office. Enjoy!

The grass is getting greener, the temperature hotter and we’ve been welcomingeverybody back to the Club. It‘s been a busy time and there’s a lot of good energyafoot.

We are happy to announce our April pairings (Oysters and Manhattans) were wellreceived. Our May 50th anniversary pairing will be sweet and savory. The cocktail willbe a Watermelon Martini for $ 6.50 and the appetizer will be a Levantine Plate for $8or enjoy them both for $12. The Levantine Plate includes humus, pita bread, dolmasand lamb meatballs.

As some of you may know, we are experiencing some minor staffing issues and hopeyou will be patient with us as we continue to get our new team members up to speed. It would also be great if you could give us a call at ext. 21 before heading over fordinner. Reservations or even just 15 minutes notice helps us serve you better.

Mother’s Day is approaching quickly! Bring your lovely mom to the Grill to celebrate! There is still some availability in both the 10:00 am and 12:00 pm seatings. To makea reservation email [email protected] or contact John at extension 32.

Wow! It’s hard to believe I’ve been here a couple of months already. I thoughtI’d have a little time to settle in and get my new staff on board before things gotbusy but with all the great weather that has not been the case. It’s been greatto see and meet so many of you but it’s been crazy too. The transition continuesbut I think we’re in the home stretch. We should be fully staffed soon, I’veopened up accounts and met with and all our vendors, new merchandise isarriving daily and while I am trying to do all this as seamlessly as possible thereare many things that I’m trying to change a bit as well, hopefully for the better.First, you do not have to sign in anymore. My staff needs to learn your namesand I think that will happen sooner without a sign in sheet. We do however

need to check you in so please come and say hi before you head out to play. It would also be veryhelpful if you would make a tee time before heading over to play and if you would fill in all theplayers names as well. We will certainly accommodate walk-in play but we can serve everyonebetter (especially those whose clubs and carts are stored) if we know who is coming and when.Second, for those few who used it, we will no longer be using the “frost line”. As I’m sure you nowknow, if there is a delay due to frost an e-blast will be sent to everyone. Third, if you had shopcredit with Jim you still have it with the Club. Going forward any credit acquired prior toSeptember 1st of the current year (including the transferred credit) will expire on December 31st ofthat year. As I continue to evaluate the current operations I will keep you abreast of any relevantchanges. I’m really enjoying it here, you have a wonderful Club and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.

No, it’s not a typo, last year’s Men’s Handicap Match Playwhich is a double elimination event finally ended last weekafter numerous delays due to weather, travel schedules, aera-tion, flood, famine, and other factors apparently beyond thecontrol of the 43 players who began the competition almost ayear ago.

Jerry Mills who had lost once and had to work his way backthrough the “once lost” bracket managed to defeat Joe Hover-

stock, who had not lost in the upper bracket, two times in a row to emerge with victory.Jerry played a total of 9 matches (3 against Joe) and won the last two, 3 and 2 and 5 and 4.

Jerry McCarthy came in 3rd, while Gary Isles placed 4th. Brian Higgins and Mitch Galnicktied for 5th place. Congratulations to all.

The 2015 version of the Men’s Handicap Match Play begins on May 11th and will end thisfall as the Tournament Committee has changed the rules to require that all matches beplayed within two weeks of when the competitors are known. Register to play online or inthe Golf Shop.

Operation PollinationAs we continue with our efforts to provide wildlife habitat throughout the golfcourse, we are excited to add a new dimension. We are joining an initiative tohelp reverse the plight of the Bumblebee and other crucial pollinating insects.Over the coming seasons we will be establishing and managing areas of pollenand nectar rich wildflower habitat that will provide essential food resources

and nesting habitat for pollinators, including native bees, butterflies and other insects. Wehope these wildflower areas will also enhance the enjoyment of your round as they will addvisual interest as well as sense of satisfaction that we are supporting some much neededenvironmental diversity. We will start the project with relatively small areas so we can learnthe establishment and maintenance techniques, and develop a system that works effectivelyfor us.Why are we doing this?

Pollinating bees and butterflies are an essential part of the natural ecosystem, forpollination of food crops and to maintain ecological biodiversity. Bumblebee numbershave declined dramatically over recent years due to loss of habitat, with some speciesnow on the verge of extinction

Golf courses provide outstanding potential to create essential habitat and food sourcesfor a range of native bees and pollinating insects

Because we can make a difference. Independent research trials have shown creation ofeven small  areas of dedicated habitat can significantly increase the numbersof pollinating insects. With your support we can make that difference count.

What is involved, and what will you see?Once we decided to expand our efforts and create wildflower areas for this purpose, weidentified a few areas around the course suitable for habitat creation. Our aim is to targetareas we can bring new life to which may currently have low ecological value. Our firstexperimental area is the small native grass area southeast of the putting green behind thewater feature. This area can be clearly seen from the Grill deck and will be a great place towatch the progress. In order to reduce any competition and to create the right environment in which to establishthe wildflowers, we recently cut down the dormant native grass in this area to a manageableheight and then followed that with an application of non-selective herbicide to kill off andhelp remove the existing grasses. The area will now be intensively scarified to expose some bare earth in which we will sow theselected wildflower seed. Some of the grasses may grow back, and if they do we may also usea growth regulator on them. That will help hold back competition and allow the wildflowerseedlings to establish strongly.

Future management of the area will include an annual cutting ofthe wildflower area in the fall, after the bird nesting period and onceseed has set and been released, with the possible need for furtherscarification to encourage more wildflowers. If dominant grasses orother unwanted plant species begin to encroach on the wildflowers, further herbicide applications may be required, but will only beused in assessed situations. We look forward to creating these new habitats and are excitedabout the opportunity to increase the ever important pollinatinginsect populations. We hope you’ll keep an eye on these areas andenjoy their transformation and the benefits they’ll provide.

Reminder – Course Irrigated with Reclaimed WaterWe have been requested by the Department of Health to remind you that our irrigation watercontains treated effluent. As many of you know the area south of the maintenance buildings(to the east of the 11th hole) is the Fairways Metropolitan District’s sewer treatment facility.Water treated there is then pumped into the lake to the west of # 13 and/or the pond on theeast side of # 8. This water is then applied to the turf through our irrigation system. TheHealth Dept. recommends that if you come into contact with this water that you observeproper hygienic procedures to ensure that the water is not absorbed into your skin oraccidentally ingested. The State has also requested that we close portions of the course fromtime to time if we are or have recently (within one hour or until dry) irrigated those areas tominimize the potential for contact with the irrigation water. Please comply with any signsposted or directives given by our Golf Shop or maintenance staff with respect to thesetemporary closures. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

If You Play, You Must Post A Score

Having an official U.S.G.A. Handicap is optional. And while there aremany reasons you might choose to have one it is the Handicap Committee's

(HC) responsibility to insure that all Lake Valley handicaps are "legitimate" or inother words kept in accordance with all the rules and principles of the U.S.G.A.Handicap System. That system is based on the principle of Peer Review. PeerReview affords golfers an understanding of a player's potential ability and to form areasonable basis for supporting or disputing a fellow golfer's score that has beenposted. According to the rules READ MORE a player's complete scoring record mustbe made available to fellow members and others who are involved in peer review. These rules also require that every player who maintains a Handicap Index mustpost all eighteen and nine hole rounds that are played provided the holes are playedin accordance with the Rules of Golf, even if the player has played alone.

If at least 13 holes are played, you must post an eighteen hole score. If only seven-twelve holes are played then a nine hole score must be posted. In either case, scoresfor unplayed holes must be recorded as par plus any handicap strokes that you areentitled to receive on the unplayed holes. For example: a player with a CourseHandicap of 30 stops playing after 16 holes because of darkness. Hole #17 is a par 4and has a handicap of 10 so he would add par (4) plus 2 stokes for a total of 6 andrecord X-6. On hole #18, which is a par 4 with a handicap of 14, he would record parplus 1 or a X-5. In no event however, may the scores on the unplayed holes exceedthe player's Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) score.

To fulfill their obligations the HC publishes a daily report of all posted scores(available at the handicap computer) and compares the tee sheet with score postingsto see who played and did not post a score. If a player does not intend to play a roundin accordance with the Rules of Golf (multiple balls or re-hitting shots, etc) he/shemay declare the round to be a practice round in which case no score may be posted. So, if you are going out to play a round NOT in accordance with the Rules be sureand notify the Golf Shop so that the Handicap Committee will not expect to find aposted score.

Basically, it's all about the responsibilities that come with electing to keep a handi-cap. If you choose to have a handicap, choose to play a round, choose to play it inaccordance with the Rules and then choose to not post your score you will bechoosing to be contacted by the HC probably in the form of a letter. If that happensplease remember the HC is simply fulfilling its responsibilities, something you areneglecting. What actions they can take if the practice continues will be the topic ofanother Article.

P.S. In order to play in Lake Valley Tournament (other than a few select ones) youmust have a current USGA Handicap and it must be at Lake Valley.
