Moravian 69 was seeded on an estimated 16,700 acres. This variety accounted for 36 percent of malting variety seedings and 26 percent of Wyoming’s total barley acreage. B1202 had topped the State for the previous fourteen consecutive years but has been replaced with Conrad and Merit. In 2005, B1202 had 30 percent of the total barley acreage. Conrad was the second most popular variety in 2006 with 13,900 acres seeded, accounting for 30 percent of the malting barley and 21 percent of the State’s total barley acres. Merit was the third most popular variety with 10,600 acres seeded, accounting for 23 percent of the malting barley and 16 percent of the State’s total barley acres. Haybet was the fourth most common barley variety but was the leading feed barley variety in Wyoming during 2006. Haybet was seeded on an estimated 8,200 acres which comprised of 44 percent of the feed barley acreage and 12 percent of the total barley acreage. Wyoming barley producers planted an estimated 65,000 acres to all barley varieties in 2006, down 10,000 acres from 2005. The Northwest District had 60 percent of the barley acreage in 2006, compared with 59 percent last year. Malting varieties accounted for 46,500 acres or 72 percent of the total. Acreage planted to feed barley totaled 18,500 acres, 28 percent of Wyoming’s total barley acreage. Baronesse was the second most common feed barley in 2006, accounting for 3,900 acres or 21 percent of the total feed barley. The Barley Variety Survey was conducted throughout the month of June by the Wyoming Field Office of USDA NASS via phone and mail. The American Malting Barley Association, Inc. provided the funding for this survey. We thank the Wyoming producers who voluntarily provided information that led to these estimates.

MORAVIAN 69 REIGNS AS THE NEW LEADER IN BARLEY VARIETIES CONRAD A STRONG SECOND

Moravian 69 moved into the leading position as the most popular barley variety planted in Wyoming in 2006with Conrad a close second. Moravian 69 was seeded on an estimated 16,700 acres. This variety accountedfor 36 percent of malting variety seedings and 26 percent of Wyoming’s total barley acreage.
