Ricefield Arts and Cultural Centre is happy to present an hour of Chinese music and songin honour of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Our talented performers will showcase diverseChinese culture, from pop songs to Huangmei Opera. We hope you will enjoy learning

more about the history and traditions of this important annual event, and theopportunity to see how it's celebrated here in Scotland.

We have been truly delighted to work with our event partners the Confucius Institute at

the University of Glasgow, Wing Hong Chinese Elderly Centre and Harmony Ensemble tobring our concert to wider audiences. We thank them for their support.

Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival, takes place each year on the 15thday of the 8th of the lunar calendar, when there is a full moon. The festival has a longhistory, dating back over 3,000 years when the emperor worshipped the moon for abountiful harvest. Lanterns play an important role in the festivities, and all kinds of

shapes and size are displayed to light the path to good fortune. Family reunions are alsocentral to the celebration, and it is a time for many people to return to their hometown to

make and share mooncakes together.

The festival myth tells the story of Chang'e, Moon Goddess of Immortality, and herhusband Hou Yi, a great hero and archer who shot nine suns out of the sky. Chang'e drank

an elixir of eternal life and flew to the moon, where she lived in the company of the JadeRabbit. Traditionally women would worship and give offerings to the goddess during

Moon Festival, to ask for luck and safety.

The Moon Represents My Heart | ⽉亮代表我的⼼, Recalling Jiangnan | 忆江南'The Moon Represents My Heart' was made famous by singer Teresa Teng. The song is often

described as "one of the most famous and beloved Chinese songs of all time". 'RecallingJiangnan' is a famous poem written by Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi . Fong Liu composed the

melody for her beloved hometown, while the music was arranged by Eddie McGuire. Performed by Harmony Ensemble (pre-recorded)

Panda Dance, The Dark Island, Radiant with Joy | 喜洋洋 'Panda Dance' is an excerpt from a piece composed by Eddie in 2011 to welcome two pandas

to Edinburgh Zoo. 'The Dark Island' is a Scottish folk tune composed by Ian MacLachlan in1958. It became famous in 1962 when used for a radio drama about the western islands.

'Radiant with Joy' was composed by Liu Mingyuan in 1957, and is often used for celebrations.Performed by Eddie McGuire

These love songs are three of the most famous Chinese folk songs. 'Jasmine Flower' comesfrom Jiangsu province, which is Fong's hometown. The other two songs use the moon as

Flower Duet | 对花Huangmei Opera is one of the most famous operas in China (along with Peking Opera). Itoriginated as a form of rural folk song, and continues to be particularly popular in Anhui

province. 'Flower Duet' presents the story of a young couple expressing their love for eachother through questioning and answering with a variety of flowers.

Pieces of Memory | 回忆的点滴, Suddenly Missing You So Badly | 突然好想你'Pieces of Memory' is an original song, written by Linfeng Wang when he was 18 years old to

express his affection to the parents. This song was later composed, and sung by Linfeng Wang.in his first album which was released in 2013. 'Suddenly Missing You So Badly' is a popular

song sung by Mayday 五⽉天. This song describes the beautiful memories of first love. Performed by Linfeng Wang 王璘枫

Whisper of Pipa & Moonlight of My Hometown Tonight | 琵琶语 - 今夜家乡⽉可亮This melody is a solo piece recorded in Lin Hai’s 林海 ‘Pipa Images 琵琶相’ album, released in

2003. The music was later composed into a song ‘Moonlight of My Hometown Tonight’ 今夜家乡⽉可亮, written by Jacky Liu 刘彤. This performance combines pipa playing and a poetry

reading of the song's lyrics to express the feelings of missing family far away. Performed by Else Kek 郭佩盈

bamboo flute (dizi). Fong's son Robin sometimes joins the group on violin and drums. Fong andEddie (who is a classical composer) have written new songs in Chinese style - including 'Bonnie

Pandas Welcome' for the arrival of two pandas from China to Edinburgh Zoo and performedChinese music with orchestras, Scottish folk musicians and choirs.

Fong Liu is from Suzhou in the Jiangsu province of China. She was taught to sing by her father,an accomplished singer of Peking Opera. Fong first performed in her hometown at the age of

five. Since then she has delighted in the songs of her native land. After studying Chineselanguage and literature at Suzhou University she spent a brief period as an advertisement

designer before launching her singing career. Ten years later, she is welcomed internationallyand has been acclaimed during residencies in China, India and, since 2006, Great Britain. Fongsings Chinese folk, Peking Opera, Chinese Jazz and modern Chinese pop. Since 2007, she hasenjoyed singing with Harmony Ensemble, specialist exponents of Chinese music. Fong has aYouTube channel called Fongsings where you can listen and watch her perform live. Fong is

also interested in education, and works as a secondary school Mandarin teacher.

F O N G L I U

Eddie is well known as a composer, winning a British Composer Award in 2003. He plays withThe Whistlebinkies, touring China with them in 1991 and with Hong Kong City Chamber

Orchestra in 2006. He also performed for several years with zheng soloist Dong Yi. He co-founded Harmony Ensemble in 2004 with dancer and musician Yanmei Wu. He worked withher, winning a Creative Scotland Award in 2004, to create a one act ballet Heaven Earth Fate

which combined Scottish and Chinese folk dance styles. His 3 act ballet Peter Pan has beenperformed over 120 times by Scottish Ballet and Hong Kong Ballet and he has composed

operas and orchestral works (broadcast on BBC Radio 3), as well as songs in Chinese style withFong Liu. He studied Chinese bamboo flute with Ruijun Hu at the Asian Arts Circuit in London.He studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music until 1970 and now lives and works in

Glasgow.

Quan Gu has a long-held special interest in traditional Chinese performing arts, and hasexplored the performance of traditional Peking opera for many years. Alongside his work at

the University of Glasgow, he is also an amateur performer of Peking opera. He rehearses andperforms, advises on operatic skills and, from time to time, attends public performances.

Q U A N G U

Linfeng Wang is a singer, composer and music producer, who specialises in jazz, opera and popmusic. His first music album《时间轴》was released in 2013, and he has previously beeninvited to perform at over 100 stage shows, including the 2013 CCTV Education Channel

Spring Festival Gala. Linfeng is also a talented multi-instrumentalist: he plays guitar, piano,bass, flute, drum and more. He is currently a PhD student in Music (Research Direction: Jazz

Music) at the University of Glasgow, and is also a member of the Royal Musical Association andInternational Association of Study of Popular Music (IASPM).

L I N F E N G W A N G

Else Kek is the Chairperson of Ricefield Arts & Cultural Centre. She started to learn to play thepipa in 1986, and was later inspired to start up a Chinese Orchestra Club in the universitywhere she studied. She had been involved in Chinese orchestra performances for several

years. Although she has stopped playing the pipa for about 20 years, her passion for traditionalarts and music fueled her drive to actively support community works and cultural events.

Ricefield Arts hosted their first ever virtual music concert in June 2020 as part of a wellbeingproject, and Else has been inspired to start practising the pipa again. She has taken courage toperform again after 20 years, as she hopes this will inspire many others to explore the positive

effects of music.

Ricefield Arts & Cultural Centre is a registered charity and social enterprise based in Glasgowthat has gained an excellent reputation for delivering original and inspiring Chinese arts and

cultural experiences, events and exhibitions for Scotland’s diverse communities. Ricefield wasfounded in December 2004 by Lin Chau and Julia Hung. 17 years on, Ricefield continues to

work with a wide range of partners to present a lively and innovative programme to promoteChinese arts and culture in Scotland.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Glasgow promotes the study of Chinese languageand engagement with Chinese culture. The institute is partnered with Nankai University and

supported by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation, China. This year theinstitute is celebrating ten years since its establishment in 2011.

Wing Hong Chinese Elderly Group (Wing Hong) was established in 1989. It is a registeredcharity and a day centre based in Garnethill, Glasgow. Wing Hong exists to promote equal

opportunities for the elderly Chinese in Glasgow who experience language barriers inaccessing mainstream services and to enhance their quality of life by supporting them in the

areas of health, welfare, housing and social services. The objectives of the organisation are toprovide culturally sensitive and holistic services, to support to elderly Chinese and to combat

social exclusion.
