    FROM THE PRESIDENT

BOARD MEETINGS BEGIN AT 7:00 PMBOARD MEETINGS BEGIN AT 7:00 PMBOARD MEETINGS BEGIN AT 7:00 PMBOARD MEETINGS BEGIN AT 7:00 PMMCA BOARD MEETINGSAREOPENTOALL MONTPELIERHOMEOWNERS

Mark your calendar for Tuesday, November 9 and Tuesday, December 14 for the monthly board meetings at

Deerfield Community Center, preschool room. All meetings begin at 7 PM.

MCA Board meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month.

Montpelier homeowners are encouraged to attend.

    Dear Neighbors,

I would like to thank all of those residents who cast

their ballot for the 2010-2011 Board of Trustees and/

or attended the Annual Meeting on September 26th

    .

While we had our usual turnout, the percentage of our695 homes represented was rather low. A re-cap of

the year was provided that included a slide show of

what the Board did to improve the common grounds,

our socials and efforts to keep everyone informed. As

a special bonus, we enjoyed hearing from some special

guests to include local politicians and a law enforce-

    ment officer.

Officer Wilson spoke to us about security in our

neighborhood, the candidate for Prince Georges

County Sheriff, Melvin C. High spoke about the roles

and responsibilities of the Sheriffs Department, Ms.

Rosalind A. Johnson, running for the District 1 School

Board, spoke on the challenges of the public school

system and finally Senator Douglas J.J. Peters (who is

not running this year) and Ms. Geraldine Valentino-

Smith, running for House of Delegates, District 23A,

gave us some insight on how to possibly obtain grant

    money for our community.

We ended the afternoon with plenty of opportunities

to share concerns and voice opinions after electing 9

members to the new MCA Board for 2011. One Trus-

tee, Julia Coldren-Walkerchose not to run again this

year. She has served as a Trustee for the past fiveyears and has made significant contributions during

that time. On behalf of MCA, I would like to thank

Julia for her dedication to our community. In addition,

we would like to welcome Tony Fleming as the newest

    Trustee.

Your new MCA Board was seated at the October

monthly meeting and, after some discussion and a

vote, the Officers and Executive Committee will remain

the same as last year. We advised the committee

chairs that were present at the meeting that theyshould update their committee charters and bring

them to the November meeting to be approved by the

    Board.

If you have been considering getting involved in your

community, now is the perfect time to step up to the

plate. While the Pool, Social and Swim Team activities

subside for a few months we have many committees

that remain busy all year. Most committees meet

very informally and are always interested in new

points of view. Or, just come to a Board meeting and

    see what is going on.

Our monthly Board meetings are held the second Tues-

day of each month at 7:00 pm at the Deerfield Run

Community Center on Route 197. All homeowners are

invited to attend and be part of the planning for the

upcoming year. Many of the questions and concerns

that are posted on the Yahoo Listservcan be discussed

with the Board in person at these meetings. Many of

you have some great ideas and suggestions that could

possibly benefit the entire community. Come on out

and let your voice be heard.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the neighbors thatbought candy from my son, Stevie, for his Special Olym-

pics Bowling. He sold 200 bars. Thanks to all that

    helped.Ellen Metz

Another BIG THANK YOU to a great Montpe-lier neighbor, Sherwood Hall. Mr. Hall helped out one

of his neighbors, but rather than taking any money for

his help, he suggested that a donation be sent to the

Benevolent Fund. Mr. Hall has done this on several

    other occasions as well.

My daughter Alanna (Friel) Turner deliv-

    ered Dexter and Savannah on

9/27/10. Alanna and her husband Steven

Turner are now the proud parents of six. Their

other children are Ashlyn, Jack, Brooke and

Vivian. The twins and Mom are all doing fine.

Also of note: I married Deborah (Deb) Melton, formerly

of Lakewood, Colorado on 7/10/10 in Denver, Colo-

rado. We met at Breckenridge Colorado where Deb is a

ski instructor. We plan to spend the winter in Colorado,

    skiing of course!

My son, Rich Potter, is currently exhibiting his paintingsat the New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt. He set himself the

task of producing a painting a day for a year, 365 works

of art. His art is quite unusual; ranges from hilarious to

angst and weltschmerz. Funny, strange, and thought

provoking. It will be on display at the New Deal until

October 31st, 2010. It may be displayed at other places

after that. Rich trained as a clown for 3 years with Bar-

num & Bailey, and toured the world with that company.

He has since made a living as an entertainer at various

venues in many places, most recently in Baltimore's

Inner Harbor. He has also designed computer graphics,

and has had some comic strips published. This week,

he had a nice article and photo published in the Ga-zette, and in the Greenbelt News. You can get more

    Treasurers Report: Lillian Fazio

As of August 6 there are 14 unpaid 2010 assessments and7 unpaid long-term assessments totaling $11,663.45.

Trustee Fazio and Mary Derrick contacted homeowners

with delinquent assessments to remind them their pay-

ments were past due. Some telephone numbers had

been disconnected and messages were left for those indi-

viduals that did not answer. At this time, Trustee Fazio

will coordinate with Mary Hughes to determine the indi-

viduals and the exact amounts that need to be turned

over to the attorney for collection.

To date, $154,728.00 has been spent from the Reserve

    Fund.

    COMMITTEE REPORTSACCC: Michael Boddie, Chairperson

There was not a quorum present at the regularly sched-

uled August meeting so it was rescheduled for August 12,

2010. A couple people have expressed interest in joining

    Facilities Committee: Richard Dengler, Chairperson

The City of Laurel has donated a new seat for the swing

set and Trustee Eisenberg offered to help Trustee Dengler

install it. Trustee Dengler will confirm if the Criscuolis

want to renew their trash/tennis court contract.

The fence company reported that the tennis court fence

is mechanically sound and the tension is fine, so there is

no need to replace it. If it is determined that the fence

should be painted before the new windscreens are in-

stalled, three bids will be required.

    Pool: Paul Buehler, Chairperson

The pool is running smoothly. There appears to be a hor-

net problem on the volleyball court which needs to be

    addressed.

Dog Day at the pool will be September 18th

    from noon to

4:00 PM. Trustee Buehler will put the information to-

Trustee Buehler will also talk to Lighthouse about the

rules concerning having an adult party at the pool.

Trustee Buehler would like to replace the ping pong tableat the pool with a more industrial strength version.

A lengthy discussion was held concerning the amount of

pool funds available to cover the expense. A motion was

    Old Business:

Trustee Fazio presented a quote collected from Jim Har-

kins from Mid-Atlantic to repair the tennis courts. The

quote was for $25,000.00 and included patching the low

spots, repairing and sealing cracks, removing the mold,

resurfacing, and repainting the lines. The tennis courts

are in bad condition and this process is less expensive

than completely digging up the courts and rebuilding

them. If this project is approved, it should be undertaken

before winter weather sets in.Trustee Jacobs made a motion to get two more quotes torepair the tennis courts. It was seconded by TrusteeEisenberg and passed unanimously.

will work with Trustee Fazio to arrange for payment.

Trustee Buehler discussed amending the four lifeguard

system for next years contract. There were times when

we only had three lifeguards. He will ask Lighthouse for

a refund. Trustee Keating suggested that this be written

down and shared with the new board which will be

    elected at the annual meeting.

Trustee Buehler reported on rough-housing at the vol-

leyball court. He made a motion to require members to

have a purchased guest pass for any guests to use the

facilities, including the playground, basketball and vol-

leyball courts. Trustee Keating seconded the motion.

During discussion, several members felt that the gate

attendants did a good job of controlling access, as did

the pool management. The motion failed. (Yes votes:

Buehler. No votes: Coldren-Walker, Dengler, Douville,

    Fazio, Jacobs. Abstaining: Keating.)

    Between Fences

    Ends November 7

Between Fences, a traveling exhibit and part of the Smith-sonian Institutions Museums on Main Street initiative, tells the stories of fences and barriers across the U.S.Whether real or imagined, fences can both unite and divideus. This country could not have been settled and built with-out fences. But fences are more than functional objects;they are powerful symbols.

Each host site for Between Fences creates a companionexhibit, based on fences, boundaries and barriers in theirown community. For our companion exhibit, MontpelierMansion, working in partnership with the Laurel Mu-seum, has chosen to examine the invisible, yet veryreal, barriers from all times in history - faced by immi-grants and forced migrants like Africans brought to beenslaved.

Our companion exhibit "Barriers and Gateways: TheImmigrant Experience in Laurel, Maryland" will be ex-ploring the challenges and successes of local families, neighbors and communities. Language, how we dress, what we eat and what we believe can set us apart, orprovide an opportunity for sharing and growth.
