Stewards of

God’s Grace

Walls are image of boundary, limitation and protection to some nations who have built it against the enemies. It simply impresses an absolute fence to unite with the person on the other side. In our lives, we consider walls as barrier to communicate and have become possible because of our inability to connect to other people. As humans we neglect to recognize that part of our frailty are the realities of conflicts that have been with us and in us in many forms, which in the end creates walls in our lives. Sometimes, more often than not, we are walls in the community that distract and build block to growth. Here we reflect that walls are both necessary and natural, it is considered an opportunity to growth and revelation, when Jesus came to Jerusalem (John 12), he knew that people would have not accept Him and considered him not part of the community, but the scripture tells it was a triumphal entry, Jesus was prepared to face the conflict and very much aware of it, soon enough he was accepted with royal appreciation and adoration. Jesus was not distracted of the conflict and tensions inside, members of the

Early Church (Acts 15) declare how the Church members and believers have become aware of the conflict and built walls in their fellowship, it was all because of beliefs, creeds and doctrine. But all because of God’s grace and unfailing love, people were able to unite

despite their diversity, assortment and variety. We are reminded by these stories that, as believers and those who have accepted the Lordship of Jesus Christ in their lives are to reflect the image of a steward. Because of the grace of God that is ever sufficient, it is always right to give these to others and release such blessings to others, such are the meaning of communion that we do, reminding us of the unfailing love of Jesus which He gave to us all. This November as we observe the Stewardship Month, we are to become wells in which flowing water is coming, let us all

together create well not wall to experience the grace of God that is ever sufficient. Well therefore is the capacity to be with and be for others in ways that heals, this is living out of God’s abundant love, not living out of scarcity and anxiety, this is experiencing the power of forgiveness.1 To become stewards of God’s grace do not only confine us to the monetary gifts, this include our being caretakers of all the blessings that we receive from the giver of such blessings which includes relationship, gifts, fellowship, possessions, and ministry. Moreover it connects us to become source of fresh water of love and grace.

1st Sunday of Advent is on December 2,

2012. The Season of Advent and Christmas is a

celebration of truth about God, the revelation of God in Christ whereby all of creation might be reconciled to God. That is a process in which now participate and the consummation of which we anticipate. Scripture reading for Advent will reflect on accountability for faithfulness at His coming, judgement on sin and the hope for eternal life. Advent is marked by a spirit of expectation, of anticipation of preparation of longing. (UCCP Calendar Discerning and Obeying God’s Will in these Critical Times) Advent Exhorters Workshop 3rd

As I watched “Umagang Kay Ganda” that segment of Anthony Taberna “Punto por Punto” my heart bled seeing how children fought their life’s battles and struggles.

Children are blessings from God. The way parents trained them in their formative years will be what they are when they grow old. Proverbs 22:6 says “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will

not depart from it.” That segment showed how fourth year graduating students vent their emotions towards their teacher by using

the facebook. The issue was not too clear to me but the prevailing mood was anger. The students and the teacher hated each other and the FB was instrumental to making the matter worst. The confrontation between the students with their parents and the teacher with the school administration was not just and merciful. The verdict was “Find another school for your children.” Clearly, It was expulsion! That moment, I prayed for

cooler heads and merciful hearts to intervene. God! Have mercy! Give them new hearts and new spirit that the future of your children will not be destroyed.

As a teacher for 31 years, I had my shares of wrong and mistakes but I mellowed as I grow old. Teachers reward students for their good works but punished them for their wrong doings. But punishments don’t mean – destroy their future.

As of this writing, I don’t know what happened to that case. Mark 8:34 says “Whoever will come after me, let

him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.” May this verse enlighten the minds of all concerned.

Students, parents, teachers and school administration, let us come together to follow Jesus. Make our decisions

and judgments to glorify God and strengthen one another.

This issue reminds parents of their obligations to their children. Where did

I go wrong? Ask yourself: Teachers as second parents to the students

examine your hearts. Ask yourself: Was it pride or anger? School

administration: do you know what really happened? Ask yourself if you

were sound in your judgment. My beloved students: God knows our

hearts. Ex.37:3. And forgive as God has forgiven you. Matthew 6:14

REFLECT…PRAY…ACT… Prayer: “God teach us to be worthy of you. May we decide according to

your will.” Amen

WHAT IS IN EGG? Contributed by Czarina Martinez, NCS-RUMD

What is usually your menu for breakfast? Coffee

and pandesal with fried egg, or LONGSILOG (Longganisa, Sinangag and Itlog), or TAPSILOG (Tapa, Sinangag and Itlog). Egg offers a delightful way to start the day. With egg in your breakfast, your day will be eggciting! Or if you have no time to prepare your children's packed lunch or baon, what you usually give them? Itlog na maalat with fresh tomatoes, or Tortang itlog with cornbeef or ground pork? You don't need extra time for your kid's baon because egg is convenient and easy to prepare. It is readily available and requires short cooking time. Egg is the cheapest source of high quality protein, inexpensive high quality protein food. Egg also contains all the essential amino acids. It has choline that develops memory function and improves memory capability. It also contains most of the recognized vitamins, such as folate which is essential for the prevention of birth defects in infants and heart diseases in older folks and vitamin D that aids in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus and essential in keeping bones strong. The truth in egg is that it is a nutrient-dense food because it contains high quality protein and essential vitamins and minerals. But if we talk about egg, we also talk about egg yolk. Egg yolk is high in cholesterol, which may contribute to high blood cholesterol levels. High blood cholesterol is major risk factor to coronary heart disease and stroke because it leads to fatty build ups in artery walls. Cholesterol and other fats are transported through the blood stream in the form of round particles called lipoproteins. The two most commonly known lipoproteins are low density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). LDL or "low density lipoprotein" is commonly called "bad" cholesterol. It can contribute to the formation of plaque build up in the arteries, known as atherosclerosis. HDL or "high density lipoprotein is known as "good" cholesterol. It is a type of fat in the blood that helps remove cholesterol from the blood, preventing the fatty build up and formation of plaque. THE EGG CONTROVERSY

Recently, there has been a growing controversy on egg consumption. A group of researchers says that eating an egg a day is OK, while the traditional belief on egg consumption is to limit egg intake to two to four eggs per week. To confirm the findings of other researchers, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI-DOST) headed by Mrs. Celeste C. Tanchoco, Scientist I and Chief, Science Research Specialist, conducted a study on the effect of regular consumption of egg on serum cholesterol, triglycerides, LDLcholesterol, and HDL cholesterol among selected 30-60 year old free-living Filipino adults.

A total of 115 subjects were included in the study, of which, 61 were of normal weight and 54 were overweight. Results of the study showed a significant increase in LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and triglyceride among female subjects after the egg-eating phase while no significant differences, was seen among males. During the egg eating phase a significant decrease in HDL cholesterol and a significant increase in LDL cholesterol were seen among the 41-50 year old subjects. Whereas at the end of the no egg phase, the total cholesterol of this same group was found significantly higher compared to the cholesterol level at the start of the intervention. Total energy intake, protein and fat were higher during the egg-eating phase compared with the no egg phase. However, a significant relationship between dietary fiber and serum total cholesterol was seen among subjects with normal weight during the no egg phase. Both LDL and total cholesterol were shown to increase at the end of both egg-eating phase and no egg phase for both normal and overweight subjects. Despite the increase, the mean of the subjects' blood lipid levels were shown to be at the normal range at the end of both regimen. The results of the study suggest that consumption of up to 1 egg per day is unlikely to have substantial increase in blood lipid levels. Aside from overall diet, it is recommended that practicing a healthy lifestyle such as weight maintenance, regular exercise, non smoking, moderation in alcohol intake, and regular medical check-up will reduce the risk of developing heart disease. - Article from FNRI-DOST 2007
