“Building Each Other”

Have you ever asked yourself about your role in a particular community?

Have you realized the importance of your role? Some textbooks define community as a place where people live, a place

where we thrive and progress in life; it shall compose of families living in a household, school, hospital, establishments, offices, church etc. Studies show, that the present perspective of man is somehow not focused on how a community is built, its reality and its reason for existence. However, there are private and various sectors in our society which are more active in doing their role, identifying relevant issues such as health condition, economic situation, socio-political controversies to name a few. Community Building

Through Heart & Mind

It is said that heartbreak and brokenness can be a source of compassion and grace, because we have been there and we have experienced life in this condition, we have learned and unlearned many things in the application process so to speak. It is where we are able to learn to spread grace and compassion even at the time of suffering and sacrifice. In a community life, many are broken and are waiting for God’s intervention; many are subtle and sure of their way to success while some gather pieces of themselves because of failure. Surely, all of us have been longing for healing and forgiveness. Such are the significant realities in a community life; we are to understand that without each other we will not be able to connect with our goals and aims while promoting our hearts and mind in the onset of building a community.

THY WORD is A LAMP UNTO MY FEET by: Pastor Ma. Beate M.Hernandez,RND

Apostle Paul in his letter to the Corinthians admonishes the same virtue of community building. His epistles were addressed to the believers in Corinth, a capital city of Roman province of Achaia in Greece. It was a city noted for its temples for the worship of various gods. Many are in struggle understanding their ways and means of building up each other as a community of faith, their differences in abilities style and advocacies brought them to division. Our February theme Building Community of Faith and Work reminds us of God’s marvellous act, His presence and dwelling among us teaches us that special abilities are given by the Holy Spirit to meet various needs in the community building. In the succeeding verses, gifts from the Holy Spirit were mentioned according to their importance and usefulness to the community of faith. While it is true, understanding these perspectives we may be able to put in mind that putting our hearts, (sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit) we will surely appreciate each other despite of our differences. In the same way that Apostle Paul ends up reminding us that no matter how many gifts we have yet failed to love other people is nothing. Let us continue building community of faith and work for we are better together.

In the EYES of FAITH by: Anjell Samonte Freedom and Love

Freedom and Love are two strong words in a philosopher’s view. Many opinions, views and elaborations have been published to explain these words. Debates are conducted over these words and none could have been more futile than believing to one’s own principle about these freedom and love. Yet the Bible speaks of these two words as if they were just spoken naturally by people, talked and dreamt regularly.

My professor used to ask our class regarding freedom, the whole time just discussing how free we really are besides the law, the rules, the punishments and the negotiations. The argument could go on further. However, the Bible says there is only one law that sums up everything: Love your neighbor as yourself. Loving encompasses so many things and emotions as the first book of Corinthians 13:13b forthrightly says… but the greatest of these is love. From love we treat each other fairly, we see everyone as brothers and sisters, we mind what we do, we forgive easily, we take care of each other, we whisper a prayer for the other, we help, we act, we serve- we love.

Above and beyond, we concede that God is the Giver of these feelings, of these acts. We recognize that from Him sprouts our true joy, thus our true love and through Him we learn to love each and every one. Love emanates from us when we follow God, the love from God flows through us and we become the instrument that God wanted us to be. Wherever we may belong, it is the goal of everyone to be able to spread God’s word and make every person involve in God’s ministry, with that we glow as one making everybody warm in God’s love.

Building and strengthening our community comprise of drawing strength and love from God and spreading those to our brothers and sisters. In this challenging world, performing these may be difficult but by God’s grace we are given more than enough of what we could grasp.

DOING MISSION in these

CRITICAL TIMES

Doing Mission in these Critical Times themed this year’s UCWO Annual Retreat as 43 church workers of The Lowland Cavite South Manila Conference – United Church Workers Organization held its Annual Retreat and Continuing Theological Education at North East Nueva Ecija Associate Conference situated in Rizal Central Church Paraiso St. Poblacion Norte, Rizal, Nueva Ecija. Nueva Ecija is known for its gift of natural resources and was called the rice granary of the Philippines, such good name also faces many challenge in this time of crisis. Economic situation is average while other parts of the province experience scarcity. UCCP Churches under NENEAC as associate Conference are solely dependent on sustaining from her own capacity to maintain ministerial works.

Our newly launched partnership with NENEAC (with 33 Churches) has given them a livelihood program through raising Goats, it is hoped, that it shall provide for pastors salary and augment the need of every local Churches. We have been taught that this continuing partnership shall be heading to a more serious and inspiring programs both the LCSMC and NENEAC Church Workers in years to come.

Part of the CTE and Annual Retreat were the inspiring inputs geared towards enhancement of our Church Workers leadership and skill development in the direction of Church Management and Administration. LCSMC Church Workers were blessed to capture the close and personal situation of Churches in Nueva Ecija, the untiring work of Pastors and Deaconesses despite the challenge of poverty and militarization, people are moreover inspired to deliver the Gospel notwithstanding the tension. The Community Immersion was intense, 4 areas were visited together with NENEAC Workers these were: Km 8, Pesa, Manganyawed and Nagbabacalan. Among 4 areas similar problems were encountered:

- Churches do not have proper document on properties

- Leaders are experiencing low moral due to lack of education

- Pastors yearn for trainings and seminars - People are waiting for driven leaders to

continuously do their role in the community. - Young people are driven to study but were

barred due to poverty. - Children are sickly while parents are hopeful

Despite the challenge and overwhelming work to do. LCSMC and all other Church leaders were inspired to see the marvelling work of God in this time of crisis, we are hopeful as a community of faith that we shall overcome because we are better together.............

Nueva Ecija Mission Trip and new partnership. The

Mission Retreat of LCSMC Church Workers at NENEAC on January 17-21, 2011. Joined in by SCCD’s three workers, Pastor Ronell, Pastor Bea and Sis. Through the Memorandum of Agreement between Lowland Cavite South Manila Conference and the North East Nueva Ecija Associate Conference, special programs were launched in 2009 in the course of partnership. SCCD’s response to Mission work was laid upon birthing of our very own Mission Challenge; an idea that came out was a Mission Exposure Trip with a year-long preparation to Palawan in April 2011. A total amount of P13,750.00 was received from individual donors for this year’s CTE at Nueva Ecija.

Membership Renewal Month. The month of February had

been designated as Membership Renewal Month in the whole UCCP as per National Council Action 2007. SCCD has complied with this since 2008, the first time it was implemented, thus, she’s one of the UCCP member churches that responded to the call. About 186 have heeded the call for renewal of membership last year sending also a total amount of P4,510.00 as Annual Denominational Contribution. For 2011, another round of campaign is set forth reiterating that the ADC goes to Property Development Program of the UCCP and that it’s not the amount of P20.00 or more that counts but the sure declaration of being a part of the church, the one Body of Christ. Third Sunday of February is designated as OFW Sunday as

part of our Membership Advocacy; the Church shall offer prayer for our Kababayans and members abroad. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ DISCOVERY CLASS Batch 1 of 2011 is scheduled on February

BUCK UP! DO NOT BE DIVIDED by: Bro. William Besario

Upon reading this you are deemed notified that

the enemy, the devil shudder from within and through the

years, shall wilfully disturb your Christian life. Extreme

financial crisis inside the house and the world at large,

sickness, sleepless nights, laborious days, despite and in

spite of all these you remain faithful and prayerful to our

God. The devil thought that his tactics, your faith will be

shattered.

But yes you remain strong and tough not to faint.

With this past years’ scenario of greater faith, Satan in this,

year 2011 is updating his deceitful plans. Foremost he had

already ordered his demons to retreat for a better position!

Hence Satan will no longer give you sleepless nights fact is

as part of his new year’s resolution 2011, he will give you

longer periods of sleep that you can wake up late and

consequently be late in going to church, he will just divide

your time to let you become sleepy during the pastoral

prayer or tempt you to become busy with your cell phone

inside the church thus negate the very purpose of worship.

This year Satan will elevate your financial status,

the devil aims to see you being a Christian acting like a king

and belittling others. Satan will no longer tempt you to

give your whole time walking towards hell, no, he just

want to tempt you to walk zigzag and be lukewarm in

your faith like the Church of Laodicea. The point is

somehow blurred but the aim of the enemy is crystal clear:

DIVIDED and RULE. Yes Satan will not aim to acquire

you as a whole. He just want to divide you. Divide your

time, divide your mind, double minded, unstable in all you

will do (James 1:8). Next the devil will divide the family.

Half of the family members will be devoted to the church

and half will be busy with earthly business, others will go

to the Farmville, cityville or into the zen garden. Year 2011

is the feast year of a new decade and Satan will be very

busy chanting in every human ear the words “you will be

like God, you will not die”, the line he successfully used in

letting our first parents fall. Satan will no longer stir human

ego to kill instead the devil with force will ignite human

pride to act like God-to be in rival with God.

What is then the final verdict of this article?

Nothing but just a reminder and reiteration that when you

want to do good, evil is right there with you (Rom. 7:21)

but let this not hinder you from drawing near to God.

Resist and fight the devil. Buck up! And don’t be divided,

for in all these things we are more than conquerors. Be

convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor

demons, neither the present nor the future nor any powers,

neither height or depth nor any else can separate us from

the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans

8:37-39). Finally, be perfect, therefore as your heavenly

FATHER is perfect. (Matt. 5:48)

Field Demo interprets servant leadership. The traits of servant leadership were interpreted in dance movements during the Field Demonstration on January 28, 2011 by the various classes closing the DLA School Week in celebration of the 27th Founding Anniversary. The characters, traits exemplified by Bible Characters and corresponding dance groups include Abraham, a man of faith & obedience by Grade 1; Moses, the meekest man by Grade 5; Joshua, the courageous leader by Grade 2. Joseph the Dreamer, a leader with integrity, by Prep Class; Peter, the transformed leader by Grade 3. Paul, the missionary by Grade 4; Josiah, the youngest leader by Nursery/Kinder class who are also the youngest of all the DLA pupils; David, the man after God’s own heart by Grade 6 which also rendered the finale number pointing to Jesus as the Greatest Servant. Mr. Ronald Cabalit, served as the Dance Instructor since 2010, a gifted professional who is able to bring out the talent in dancing of the pupils. This galore of dances was connected by a narration written by Teacher Cristy Gervacio as narrated by Pastor Ronell Hernandez. The whole founding celebration centered on the theme, “Discerning God’s Great Purpose as Servant Leaders.

Sports fest adds energy to DLA School Week. The traditional multi-level grade teams, unique to DLA during Sportsfest added energy and vibrance to the DLA School Week held on January 24-28, 2011. Games were not only confined to the usual ball games but also parlor games to suit the younger children. A cheer and dance competition opened the Sportsfest on the first day, January 24. Winners in the various contests sports, arts, literary and academic are as follows:

Nutritious Delights from the Humble Kangkong

Swamp cabbage (Ipomoea aquatica), also known as kangkong, is a common green leafy vegetable in the Philippines. It is speculated to have originated in India but is now widely grown throughout the tropics. All parts of the young plant are eaten. The leaves are fragile and require rapid and careful handling to minimize damage and wilting. Kangkong is a common ingredient in Filipino dishes. It is a usual leaf vegetable in sour fish or meat stews like sinigang. Another popular native dish among Filipinos using kangkong is adobong kangkong. It is usually sauteed in cooking oil, onions, garlic, vinegar and soy sauce. Kangkong can also be made into an appetizer and salad, as in crispy kangkong and kangkong salad. Here are some recipes from kangkong developed by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST). Kaldelay: Ingredients ½ cup oil for frying tokwa (soybean curd) 1 ½ cup tokwa, sliced 2 T margarine, fortified 2 tablespoons garlic, minced 1/3 cup onions, sliced 2 cups pork liver, sliced 1 cup carrots, sliced 1 cup squash 2 cups stringbeans, sliced 2 cups kangkong leaves and stalks 1 cup saluyot leaves (jute) 1 cup malunggay leaves

Procedure:

Fry tokwa and set aside. Saute garlic, onions, pork liver in margarine. Add carrots, squash, stringbeans, and kangkong.

Simmer for 3 minutes. Add saluyot, malunggay and fried tokwa. Serve while hot.

Remember, consume two to three servings of vegetables each day, one of which is from the Green Leafy or Yellow Vegetable group. One serving of Leafy Vegetables or Other Vegetables is equivalent to 1/2 cup, cooked. Half cup of boiled

kangkong (45 grams) will provide the following amount of nutrients: 12.6 kilocalories, 0.67 grams of protein, 23

milligrams of calcium, 11.25 milligrams of phosphorus, 0.58 milligrams of iron, 697.5 micrograms of beta-carotene, 0.01 milligrams of thiamin, 0.03 milligrams of riboflavin, 0.27 milligrams of niacin, and 4.5 milligrams of ascorbic acid. For

more vegetable recipes, you may avail of the handbook entitled "Mga Piling Lutuing Gulay-Masustansya na, Masarap pa!" at the National Nutrition Council of the Department of Health (NNC-DOH), Nichols Interchange, Makati City, Tel.
