There have been many opportunities for them to show St. James’s commitment to the ministry of hospitality. Some of these have been efforts to gather the community together by the monthly Bistros, others have been receptions for funerals, bishops visits, special community events, and still others have been to support the community’s teachers, Habitat for Humanity, Landmark society and other service programs. Anyone who has helped in the work or popped their head in when something is going on knows how demanding this work is. Those who work behind the scenes cooking, baking, planning menus, grocery shopping, are doing a service for Christ on our behalf and the whole community is blessed by their service. We are not a large and heavily populated congregation. Most of the work is done by the same few people and, while we hope that changes, most of us have accepted that as today’s reality. Even so, the invitation to the whole congregation and others in the community to help in these ministries is sincerely and urgently offered. As one who enjoys participating in these events from time to time, I can tell you that even though it is hard work, the community spirit is always alive and inspiring. The kitchen is a place of joy and self-giving and a huge part of St. James. As summer rolls on, I hope a bit of relaxation can be enjoyed by those who have worked so hard. May God bless everyone with healthy, joy and peace during the summer slowdown. Faithfully, Steven+

Dear Friends, I want to offer my special thanks to the women of St. James, the kitchen crew (men included) and the ECW for their particularly dedicated service to the ministry of the parish this year. Save the Date: Bell Tower Celebration – July 28th, a Saturday, we will celebrate the completion of the first phase of the bell tower. The Bishop has been invited as well as the contractor, Bill Farmer, and his workers. We are also inviting all of you, the Deanery, and the people of Batavia. The celebration will run like an open house from 11 until 1. The exciting part will be at 11. After thanking the workers and everyone who supported the work on the tower, Charles Bradley will play the organ, the bells will ring, and the front door will be opened. Starting around 11:30, we will be serving a picnic meal of hot dogs, chips, and a drink. People will be free to wander around the church to see the repairs to the tower and the stained glass window. We hope to have a slide show going in the sanctuary showing the work that was done. Please put this date on your calendar, as you won’t want to miss it. (We also need volunteers to cook hot dogs and distribute food). Warden’s Report for June 19th Vestry Meeting: Steve Rumery sent a financial report that included $6,000 that was received from the fish fries and $342 from the May Bistro, bringing the $10,000 budget item up to $7,436. This line is fundraising for operations as we had a $10,000 shortfall in our pledges this year. The biggest draw on our budget has been in general maintenance, which has spent $13,666 of its budgeted $16,000. This has largely been due to furnace repairs. Gift card income is down; members need to help support this program. The buildings and grounds report indicated that we had had a fire inspection requiring us to put in some emergency lighting. They are preparing the front fence for painting. We have been cited by the city and have until the end of July to get it done. Marcia Gann reported a $937 income from the RSVP Dessert Reception; this money went to restoration. She also listed other fundraising activities planned for the summer, including the garden tour and the bike rally. These funds will go for restoration. The tower project is almost done. Pike Stained Glass Studios, which is fixing the window, estimates it will be finished before the week of July 18th. Oakfield Property: We had three parties who had expressed interest in the property, so we had not listed it yet. As no good offer has been extended, we will sign on with Nothnagle Realtors to sell it. We are also working on having a survey of the property done. Summer Activities: Father Steven would like to have a parish picnic on the lawn. The tentative date is August 5th.

Community Tower Celebration – see article in the newsletter. There will be a booth in the park on July 4th to sell tickets for the garden tour and the bike rally, which will be September 9th. Cathy Judkins told about the Bishop’s Mustard Seed Project. This is a Deanery project to evangelize in a different way. The parishes in LeRoy and Stafford are going to join us to put on an outdoor jazz service. This would probably be in September. More details to follow. Cathy Judkins, Senior Warden Many Thanks for a St. James Welcome! Bishop Masereka and Dr. Daniel Sambili of the Bishop Masereka Christian Foundation visited St. James the weekend of June 2nd and 3rd. The dinner held on the 2nd was enjoyed by 54 people. Dr. Sambili presented an informative talk on the current fundraising project targeting the building of a new hospital in Kasese, Uganda. Thanks to the proceeds from the May organ concert held here at St. James, Father Steven was able to present a check for $508.00 to Bishop Zeb. Additionally, the dinner's proceeds, donations and a raffle, along with the Sunday offering netted over $400.00 that has been donated to the BMCF. The Bishop and Dr. Daniel were very touched by the hospitality and grateful for the generosity shown here at St. James! For anyone who is still interested in making a donation to the foundation, please see Jim or Joan Ellison. June Fundraising -- The Wednesday Bistro for June raised $197, and the food prepared and delivered to Robert Morris School for the Teachers’ Luncheon raised $61 toward operating expenses. Thanks to all who assisted with these two events. Wednesday Bistro Hiatus – there will be no Wednesday Bistro in July and August. However, we have a couple of great lunches planned for the fall. In September, we will feature Italian cuisine and Pat Fussell will be our featured vocalist. Due to the popularity of the German-themed lunch in April, we are planning a return performance of Barbi Robusto Galliford and a German menu for October. Thank you for your support of the spring/summer Bistros and we’ll see you in the fall! Home and Garden Tour – will take place Sunday, July 22, 2012 from noon – 5 p.m. There are 13 gardens on the tour this year and 5 homes will have the first floor of their homes open for viewing

from noon – 4 p.m. Beginning at 4 p.m., there will be a dessert reception in the parish hall. The Master Gardeners will present a program, there will be raffle prizes and the Posy Power Peddler will be stationed in the parking lot to offer plants, garden accessories, bird houses and colorful lawn accents for sale. Some of the door prizes have been donated by Crnkovich’s, Pudgie’s, Petals and Plants and Country Max. The tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Harrington’s Batavia location, the church office or by calling 343-8218. This event is co-hosted by the Landmark Society of Genesee County and will benefit the Restoration Fund. ECW recently purchased some new tables for the parish hall. Since these tables are a different length than our old ones we need new tablecloths. You may be able to help us out. When you receive a circular in the mail from Bed, Bath, and Beyond, on the back is a coupon for 20% off a single item. If you still have your coupon from a previous mailing and do not plan to use it we can make use of it. Drop it off in church and it will be used to help defray the cost of our new tablecloths. The store will accept the coupons even after the expiration date. Thanks for your help.
