Holy Nativity

Dear People of Holy Nativity,

Summer is officially upon us. School is out,

camp has opened, and people are making

plans for the 4th and for other trips and

activities. You will see from my office hours

this month, I am no exception. While I will

be conducting services on Sunday, July 8th,

I will be on vacation before and after that

time (from July 5th to July 16th). I will also

be at Paradise Point July 26th-28th.

Even with all the travels and comings and goings, it will be business as

usual at Holy Nativity. Our service schedule remains the same throughout

the summer. We also have the Church Yard Sale coming up on the 28th

and a Pot Luck on the 29th. Plans are underway for new youth activities,

so be on the lookout for more information on that.

As you can see, summer is generally looked on as a time for fun and

recreation. We find ourselves trying to figure out how we can spend

more time relaxing and less time working. We think “summer reading”

and we think throw away novels read for their entertainment value and

little else. But summer is also a great time for contemplation.

In June, I preached at the Integrity Eucharist at St. Michael’s. The Old

Testament reading was Micah 6:8.

“He has told you, O mortal, what is good;and what does the Lord require of youbut to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

While my sermon focused more on the Gospel, Micah’s words have

remained with me. Given all that is going on in our world, what does

it mean to do justice? Do our actions demonstrate a love of kindness?

Barbara Samperisi Receives Certificate of Completion

Sewanee, The University of the South, offers formative

trainings, and life-changing programs for clergy, laity,

and all the baptized. This is a unique four-year distance

learning certificate program based upon small-group

study and practice that equips and empowers individuals

to cultivate intentional practices of evangelism, hospitality,

and connectedness rooted in the gospel.

“The purpose, more or less, is to discern what your own

personal calling is. It is not necessarily for individuals

wishing to becoming a priest or deacon, but is available

for anyone - for your own discernment” said Barbara.

Classes meet once a week, where trained instructors or

mentors guide theological reflection based on the theme

of the reading. “You discuss current events, what the

bible says, what our culture says about it, and ultimately

your own personal thoughts or feelings.”

We congratulate Barbara on completing this 4-year course

and admire her dedication to discovering and nurturing

her desire to explore and see the reality of scripture.

And just how do we walk humbly with God?

The end of June found many from our Diocese

joining others at the Capital for the Families

Belong Together Rally. Back in March, members

of our Diocese joined together to support our

youth in the March for Our Lives Rally. Not only

were these events attended by members of our

Diocese, Episcopalians from across the country

joined similar events in their home states. Our

Presiding Bishop has also made public statements

in relation to these issues.

Our baptismal vows call us to seek and serve

Christ in all people, and to strive for justice and

peace among all people. For some, these events

are ways to live into these vows, and to Micah’s

call. How is God calling you to live into your

baptismal vow? How do Micah’s words speak to

you?

As we are relaxing and taking a break from our

busy lives this summer, can we carve out just a

bit of time for contemplation? How is the Spirit

calling us to do justice and love kindness in the

world about us? Where will we find ourselves as

we walk humbly with our God?

In Christ’s love,

Michael +

JUNE VESTRY HIGHLIGHTS

JULY 2018 | Page 3

Holy Nativity Newsletter

Youth Group — Matt Wheeler

Matt presented the plans he has for leading the Youth group. He wants to involve the youth in more service activities as well as fun activities. He would like the youth to be more aware of how and why things are done in the church. He would like to join with some other youth groups, Episcopal or other (Legacy church?). Fr. Michael mentioned that the priest in Hailey would like to use our facility for a “Lock-in” and maybe our youth could join in. Kendra Mattson has expressed interest in helping with the youth.

Paradise Point Presentation — Kurtis Kissell

Two Diocese representatives came to talk with us about the Paradise Point Capital Campaign. They showed a slide presentation and are asking each parish to set a goal of how much they can raise toward this fund-raising campaign.

They would like a representative from our church to be our spokesperson and motivator. Forms are to be completed and sent to the diocese stating whether we are going to participate or not, and if so, what our commitment will be. After the presentation, it was decided that we need to think this through before giving our response but a deicision must be made by August. We will request a copy of the slide presentation.

Treasurer’s report — Donna Lofton (for Mike Magette)

Donna Lofton read a brief note from Mike summarizing the finances. Nothing big….we continue to do well.

May Vestry Minutes — Cindy Wolfenbarger

The May Vestry minutes were approved by the Vestry members by email on May 18th

VESTRY REPORTS:

Office — Cindy Wolfenbarger

Caller ID: Cindy needs to call Cable one and have them activate the caller ID for the office phones.

Church Directory w/Photos: Several people have asked about an updated Church Directory with photos. Mary Buchanan and Christy Fendley were asked if they are willing to do this. It was decided that we would not do the professional

photo set-up. Mary asked if people could just send her a good (high resolution) photo. Father Michael said he could bring a camera some days for those who did not have a photo. Mary said it would be best to just make a whole new directory rather than a supplement.

Babysitting: We need to talk to Maddie Wheeler about babysitting in the nursery….if she is going to continue or if we need to find a replacement for her.

Fellowship — Mary Buchanan:

Yard Sale: Mary said there were some questions as to where the money from the Yard sale will be going. The Vestry has already established that it will go to the Building Fund.

Building and Grounds — JoAnn Myers:

Parish Hall Repainting: Jo Ann presented an estimate to repair and paint in the Parish Hall for $1200. The question was whether it is to paint the entire interior, or just “6 areas” that need repair? Phil will be contacted for clarification.

Wedding Reception — Jo Ann Myers:

Parish Hall Use: A situation arose last weekend where an Event planner asked to use our Parish Hall for a wedding reception. We let him, but realized too late that it was a bad idea. He was not up front about the details. In the future we will only rent our facility for members, their friends or families and service organizations. The requests need to be called to the office in a timely manner and then will be directed to Kelly Mattson to be handled according to protocol.

The meeting ended at 7:55pm with the Vestry members praying the Lord’s Prayer

Respectfully submitted,Cindy Wolfenbarger Vestry Clerk

VOLCANIC ASH HAZARDS | From Ada County Emergency ManagementProvided by Bob Burnz

JULY 2018 | Page 5

Holy Nativity Newsletter

Did you know that volcanic eruptions in Oregon and Washington can affect us here in Idaho?

Volcanoes impact the earth in many ways that extend hundreds of miles away from a volcano. One of the hazards identified in Ada County is volcanic ash fallout from volcanic eruptions west of Idaho.

Recent activity by the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii catapults volcanic eruptions to the forefront of the news. Volcanoes impact the earth in many ways, but volcanic ash and dust can create a myriad of problems once they hit the atmosphere. Ash from the 1980 Mt. Saint Helen’s eruption rose to a height of 60,000 feet and covered an area of 22,000 square miles. Plummer, ID received one inch of ash from that eruption. Our location alone gives us reason to learn to prepare for and respond to volcanic ash fall.

VOLCANIC ASH FACTS: Volcanic ash is actually small jagged pieces of rocks,

minerals, and volcanic glass the size of sand and silt. Ash can irritate eyes and cause respiratory problems in

people and animals. Ash can clog or abrade engines, gears, and other forms

of machinery. It may also contaminate or clog ventilation, water supplies, and drains.

Volcanic ash does not dissolve in water and is mildly corrosive.

When wet, volcanic ash conducts electricity and can cause electrical short circuits. Transmission lines, computers, and other electronic devices can be affected. Often the power goes out during or even after an ash fall.

QUICK PREPAREDNESS STEPS:1. Store at a minimum three days water and non-perishable

food in your home for all the family members including pets. Have a back up method for preparing food if the power is out.

2. Add N-95 rated face masks and goggles to your disaster supply kit to protect against respiratory problems and eye abrasion. Add enough plastic wrap to the kit to wrap the critical electronics in the home.

3. Battery or crank powered radios for communications and flashlights/lanterns for light will be needed. If you are using battery powered units, make sure to keep an ample supply of spare batteries.

A well stocked disaster supply kit has many more items in it than the few mentioned above; for a detailed look at what should be in a kit go to: adacounty.id.gov/accem/Emergency-Preparedness-Guide

ACTIONS TO TAKE During and After an Ash Fall:1. Close all doors, windows, and dampers in the home.

Seal drafty windows with tape. Place damp rolled towels at the threshold of exterior doors to prevents ash from blowing in at the bottom of the door.

2. Wear long sleeves and pants when in contact with the ash. Protect your eyes with goggles and your lungs with an N-95 mask. When entering your home from outside, remove ash covered clothing and shoes.

3. Most roofs cannot support more than four inches of wet ash. Keep the roof and household gutter systems as clear as possible. Ash is very slick, be careful on ladders and on the roof.

4. Inside the home dust often using a vacuum and attachments. Dust cloths can become abrasive. Keep sensitive electronics wrapped and unplugged until all ash/dust can be removed.

5. If possible, do not drive in ash as it is harmful to vehicles. If you must drive, do not exceed 35 mph. Chang oil, oil filters, and air filters every 50-100 miles in heavy dust; every 500-1000 miles in light dust.

The Yard Sale has been set for July 28th. Start thinking of what you’d like to donate to

this great fund-raising effort.
