At its last meeting, the Session began the process of calling a new associate pastor for MPC. I want everyone in our congregation to know how happy I am about this development, and how it comes as a significant answer to prayer.

This is the motion the session just passed on November 19:

That the Session request that the Nominating Committee prepare a list of names to serve on a Associate Pastor Nominating Committee (APNC), for approval at the January 2014 Congregational Meeting. The Nominating Committee, as a committee of the congregation, will determine the number of individuals to place in nomination for the APNC in accordance with the Book of Order, Presbytery guidelines, and MPC bylaws (as applicable). Further, that the Clerk of Session extend an invitation for the Peace River Presbytery’s Committee on Ministry (COM) to send a representative to MPC’s December 2013 Session meeting to begin the process of calling a full-time associate pastor as soon as possible.

Inevitably, many will wonder how long the search will take. In answer to that question, let me say that searches for associate pastors generally take less time than searches for pastors. And, I want you to know that the Committee on Ministry (COM) of our Peace River Presbytery, that assists with and oversees the process, has already been very helpful in getting the process started. In fact, the COM approved us moving forward before we made a formal request. Now that’s cooperation! I think they are very happy for us. Best case, in my mind, is that we would have a new associate pastor by summer or fall of 2014, which would give us all time to plan our welcome for the new minister. However, let’s resolve together to put the timing in God’s hands, trusting that he will work all things together for our good.

Readers' Rendezvous

On Wednesday, December 11 at 10:00 AM in room 201, Glenn Haughie reviews The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. In addition to his discussion, he will also have a video presentation.

The book “tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew. It’s a story inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we’re made of.”

We recommend reading each book ahead of time, but some may prefer to come – enjoy the discussion – and then read the book. Refreshments are provided!

We gather on the 2nd Wednesday of the month through April at 10:00 AM. 5

The spirit of Christmas will soon fill the air as the preschool children begin working on special projects, helping them learn about the true meaning of Christmas. They will learn the letter “J” for Jesus, construct a nativity scene and make handprint angels! A favorite of the children is the Christmas Story which will be presented to all the classes throughout the season.

On Thursday, December 12 Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive for "Breakfast with Santa and Someone Special." This will be a special event for all of the preschool children. Breakfast, pictures with Santa and a special story by Mrs. Claus will round out the morning!

The annual Christmas pageant will be held in the Sanctuary on Wednesday, December 18, at 9:00 AM. The children will be presenting “Someone Has a Birthday” for families and friends. Please join us for this special treat!

A reminder to anyone interested in having their child attend preschool next year should contact the preschool office and add their child’s name to our wait list. This will enable us to contact you for registration in January.

On behalf of the Moorings Preschool Staff we wish you and yours a warm and blessed Christmas season!

Children’s News Advent Pajama Party

Mark your calendar for our annual Advent Pajama Party for children through fifth grade and their families. Join us for this evening of craft fun. We’ll be making an ornament, cards, nativity scenes and a Christmas tree pin. We’re planning fun for all ages including our annual peppermint fudge sundaes. Children (and parents if they like) are invited to come in pajamas ready for bed. The evening closes in candlelight as we remember the first Christmas. This time honored evening remains a treasured memory of many of our youth. Making a reservation at 261-1487 or emailing [email protected] will help us plan appropriately.

This beautiful children's book, Mariella Mouse in the Opera House authored by our own member, Dottie Withrow, may be seen and purchased ($15) at the church Reception Desk. All on-site sales are graciously designated by Dottie Withrow to benefit Moorings Music Ministry.

Youth News

Sixth Grade Bible DedicationAs part of our New Milestone Ministry, the sixth graders were presented with Bibles from their parents. We acknowledge that sixth grade is a is a time in which the youth are asking questions and searching for answers. As a faith community made up of families, ministers, teachers, and friends, it is our responsibility to help give them the tools to find the answers. Parents have made an investment in their children’s Christian education and, as a congregation, let us prayerfully help them along the way.Pictured front row: Ashley Hendrix, Elle Lee Bancroft, Kenzi Giblin and Emily Rowland. Emma Young, Isabell Bolen, Sarah Packard and Emily Godley. David Tierney, Peter Learned, Jack Boyd. Not pictured, Heather and Lauren Howard, Betsy Germann, and Kalean Wood.

Thanks Be To God... ...for all He is and all He provides! "Mission and Thankfulness" have been our (youth) themes for the month of November. Spending time talking about all that we have in our lives and how important it is to say "thank you” has been the topic of discussion. Challenging the youth to not just be thankful for what they have but to recognize how fortunate they are, and how they can make a difference in someone else’s life. Whether it is by being a better friend, family member, church participant or by gathering food for someone in need, they have the power to make a difference. They can become someone that others are thankful for!

High School Photography ExhibitOur High School Students have been involved in our church mission projects, as well as church leadership and a photography project. Member Wayne Hook has worked with the Sunday School class on using photography as an expression of faith. They were presented with the poem “Creation” by James Waldon Johnson and explored how to capture those words in a photograph. Evyn Greaffe, Abby Tierny, Ashlyn Tierney, Kaitlin Price, Victoria Johnston, Shea Dowling, Augie Boyd, and Carrie Zundel will have their photos displayed upstairs in the Pastor’s Gallery during the month of December.

Scholarship Funds NeededFor the Jim Smith School in Guatemala

The school year has just ended in Balcones de Palin, Guatemala and we will soon be awarding scholarships for the 2014 school year to sixth grade graduates of the Jim Smith School there. The Jim Smith school (K-6) was built by our church in this impoverished community and dedicated in 2002.

Started in 2005, this scholarship program has encouraged and enabled students to continue their schooling beyond the sixth grade in order to learn a trade or go on to college. The amount of the scholarship ranges from $80 to $390 a year depending on the school attended. This past year, 65 scholarships were awarded for a total cost of $13,000. Four went to University students, 21 for High School and 40 for Junior High.

Our continued commitment to this scholarship program is needed to ensure that these children can remain in school in order to help raise their families out of poverty and become contributing members of their community and country.

A gift to the JSS Scholarship fund also makes a unique Christmas gift. Brochures and Gift Cards will be available throughout the month of December at a display table in the narthex.

Gifts of any amount will be gratefully accepted. Checks should be made payable to Moorings Presbyterian Church, marked for Jim Smith School Scholarship Fund and either mailed to the church, turned in at our display table, or put in the offering plate.

Thank you for your help in funding this program.

Christmas Joy Offering 2013A cherished Presbyterian tradition since the 1930s, the Christmas Joy Offering is one of the four special offerings designated by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Because Advent and Christmas shine a light not only on our world’s greatest hope but also on our world’s greatest need, the PC(USA) provides this timely opportunity for congregations to support causes specifically designed to bring Good News of Great Joy to the poor in circumstance or spirit. This year, fifty percent of the receipts for the Christmas Joy Offering are distributed to the

PCUSA for assistance programs that provide support to retired and active church workers and their spouses and families, and Presbyterian related education. The other fifty percent supports our missionaries in Bangladesh, Drs. Les and Cynthia Morgan.

Look for the special Christmas Joy envelopes in the Sunday bulletin on December 15, or send your check made payable to Moorings Presbyterian Church marked “Christmas Joy Offering,” directly to the church.

Jim Smith School LuncheonSunday, December 8 11:15 AM in Moss Hall

The Mission Committee invites everyone to join us in Moss Hall as Rene Valiente from Guatemala gives an interesting presentation on our mission with the Jim Smith School in Balcones de Palin, focusing on the scholarship program that Moorings has funded since 2005. Miracles in Action will be selling Guatemalan handicrafts at the luncheon and contributing 50% of the proceeds to the scholarship fund.Reservations can be made by the signing up at the Reception Desk or calling 261- 1487. Stewardship 2014“Jesus Christ, At the Center of Our Lives”

PLEDGE CARDS FOR 2014 HAVE BEEN MAILED.Please pray for the ministries of our churchand remember to return your pledge card

as soon as possible.

Questions? Speak to Jana Geiger in the church office (213-5233) or e-mail her at [email protected].

A Timely Opportunity: Donating Stock to MPCThe Stewardship and Finance Committees would like to be sure that everyone knows of a good opportunity to save on your personal taxes and to also help the church financially.

With the stock market reaching new highs this year, many are in the blessed circumstance of owning securities that have appreciated well beyond their cost.

Today, selling appreciated stocks has become much more expensive. Capital gains tax rates have increased for many, and the new 3.8% net investment tax is also levied on the gains. No tax is due, however, if the stock is donated to the church (or another qualifying charity). On top of this, the donor may deduct, as a charitable contribution, the full market value of the stock.,

Moorings makes this process very easy. Anyone who is interested in learning more should phone Jana Geiger in the church office (213-5233), who will be pleased to help. You may also want to check with your tax advisor first, in the event you may have special circumstances to take into account.

Thank you for considering this “win-win” opportunity!

Distinguished Speaker Series

Thursday, January 23 6:30 PM (with catered dinner) Lincoln’s Christian Vision

Author and Editor Karl Weber ......joins us once again to discuss the book he edited, LINCOLN: A PRESIDENT FOR THE AGES, a companion to the Oscar-winning movie LINCOLN directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Daniel Day-Lewis.

President Abraham Lincoln grappled with the issues of slavery and freedom, war and peace, and the proper use of presidential power in the context of our nation's greatest moral and political crisis. Karl Weber, a writer, editor, and book developer with more than 25 years’ experience in the book publishing industry, joins us once again, this time to discuss Lincoln’s Christian vision, the chapter he wrote in the book LINCOLN, and how Lincoln’s second inaugural address revealed the evolution of his thinking during the final weeks of his life. Join us for dinner on Thursday, January 23 at 6:30 PM catered by Chef Evie Viggiani, ($10). Please make reservations at the Reception Desk or call 261-1487 to let us know you'll join us for this wonderful evening.

It’s been said that the Moorings Presbyterian Women’s group offers a balanced combination of learning, serving others, and then enjoying the fruits of our Christian labors. The opening of our winter season last month brought us together doing just that – with enriching Bible studies, ongoing mission works and continuing friendships.

Highlighting the month of December will be our PW Luncheon Gathering with Dr. Kevin Cooper, General Counsel/Chief of Staff at NCH as key-note speaker on Tuesday, December 10 at 11:30 AM. We also highly anticipate a visit from Nancy Lascheid, who will bring the latest news of the Neighborhood Health Clinic. For an extra holiday treat, Cahlua and Cream will perform at the opening of the luncheon meeting. Martha/Rachel Circle will provide the luncheon. ($7) Please sign up at the Reception Desk so that an accurate number of luncheons can be prepared. The Coordinating Team will meet before the luncheon at 10:00 AM - in Classroom B.

On December 2 and 3 we rang bells for the Salvation Army at the Neapolitan Shopping Center. We thank the many people who participated in this worthwhile event - and to Billie Stevens who organized the MPC volunteers. If you’re new to MPC and you need information about PW, please contact Jen Clark ([email protected]) or Angela Bruckner ([email protected]) or any of our many members. For further information, our 2013-2014 PW Handbook is available at the Reception Desk. If you like to read and discuss books, Readers’ Rendezvous, sponsored by PW, attracts both men and women each month. Next meeting: Wednesday, December 11 at 10:00 AM with Glenn Haughie presenting The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (see page 5).Most importantly - we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, Happy New Year!
