Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new academic year at AISB. The start to this year has certainly been one with many firsts. On August 22nd, we welcomed 940 students to school – an unprece-dented figure in the school’s 55 years in operation.

Over the past two years, the Board has made a commitment to refurbish, renovate and modernize the school campus, to meet the changing needs of our curriculum and student requirements. This summer was no exception with the com-pletion of the new Early Learning Centre, which opened for the start of this school year. This expansion has afforded the main school additional spaces as the EC2, EC3, EC4 and Kin-dergarten classrooms moved to their new abode.

Over the summer, the former Early Childhood classrooms were converted to new Design and Music spaces for the Secondary and Elementary Schools. Five of these class-rooms will now house the film/media, technology, robotics and materials classes for the Secondary School, whilst two classrooms have been redesigned to accommodate the Ele-mentary Music program. The Secondary Art classroom attic space has been totally remodeled and expanded so that all Art classes will be taught in this space. Likewise, both the Elementary and Secondary Special Educational Needs de-partments have been allocated new spaces. Also, the Ath-letics and PE departments have a new multipurpose out-side court that has been designed for volleyball, basketball and tennis.

It has been a very busy summer in other parts of the school with the addition of a PTO Office, a covered walkway be-tween the cafeteria and the secondary building, a Theatre faculty office, a new Elementary office, as well as installing new teacher and student desks.

Whilst all the projects were completed in time for the first week of school, undoubtedly there will be workers around the school finishing some of the detail work in the weeks to come.

director’s message

The traffic problems along Pipera have still not been re-solved, but we continue to work with Voluntari to ensure that our needs are met. However, the city has agreed to install traffic lights on the pedestrian crossing outside the school, which will greatly ease the speed of the traffic as well as making the pedestrian crossing safer. With the new ELC building, we built an additional 100 parking spaces that will take the pressure off the primary parking area outside the main building. Your continued patience at morning and afternoon carpool times are appreciated.

As we mentioned last June, we have upgraded campus security with additional, controlled access at all our entry points and have eliminated the old Early Childhood and El-ementary School entrances. You will have received commu-nications from Catalina Gardescu outlining the new badge protocols and the entry restrictions for those who are not parents at the school.

As a school, we are committed to improving the life and ed-ucation of the students in our care to make the experience at AISB happy, safe, and educationally demanding to en-able us to fulfil our mission while preparing, engaging and inspiring your sons and daughters.

We will have a great year.

Regards,

Robert Brindley

Vom avea un an bun. Toate cele bune,

Robert Brindley

The Terry Fox Run

On September the 2nd at 10:00 the 17th annual Terry Fox Run will be held at the school, followed by the PTO welcome back BBQ.

This is a fantastic family event where the whole school com-munity comes together in order to raise funds and support the research for a cure for cancer.

The Terry Fox Run is a non-com-petitive event (run, jog, or walk) to raise funds to support the re-search towards a cure for cancer.

It is the world’s largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research, with runs occurring in over 60 countries.

For more information please watch this short video about Terry on YouTube. To date, AISB has raised over 165,000 Euros. The funds raised will be donated to The Oncology Institute in Cluj (http://www.iocn.ro); as we have done in the previous years.

The children the the Elementary School have all been given pledge sheets, to raise funds. Please ensure that the pledge sheets and the funds raised are either given back to the classroom teacher or given to the Info desk on Saturday Sept. 2.

We will also have some fantastic T-shirts for sale on the day itself and the week before.

Following the run (which is approximately 5km through the forest across from the school), the PTO will host a BBQ. We do hope that our entire AISB community will participate and support this great cause.

For any further information or questions, please contact either Mr. Alex Sota, Elem. School Activities Coordinator, Mr. David Hughes, Sec. School Activities Director or Ms. Margritha Hofman, whole school Ser-vice Learning Coordinator.

Books for Apostolache

As one of their projects this year, the Boy Scouts have decided to help fill a library for a school in the town of Apostolache in Romania. We are going to build them bookshelves and desks, as well as get them a desktop computer for the students to use. The project will take several weeks to complete and we hope to be finished close to the start of the Romanian school year. The school has provided us with a new room for the library and as any good library does, it needs books. We are currently looking for books that will suit kids from grades K-12. Books in Roma-nian are preferable, however, English books are also welcome. If you have any books that you no longer read why not donate them to the school of Apostolache and let its students enjoy them. There will be a box in the atrium and collection will take place from August 25th – September 8th. Thank you!

AISB Early Learn-ing Center Footwear Guidelines

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our new, pur-pose-built facility for AISB’s youngest learners! We are ex-cited and proud to share this space with you.

In order to enable the children to explore and uti-lize this environment to its fullest potential, we would like to remain mindful of its ongoing pres-ervation and cleanliness. As such, please note that the ELC will be a no outdoor shoe zone. We will be requesting that shoes be changed or removed upon entering the building. You are most welcome to remain barefoot, with socks, bring a change of footwear (no high heels, please), or alternatively to help yourself to one of our indoor slippers.

We hope that this space will become a true hub for our community and contribute to the ev-er-strengthening bonds between us.

Do come in. Stay a spell. And watch your children grow.
