    CHAPTER -2 LARGE NUMBERS

    Dear Students ,

Let us try to understand the concept of large numbers.

    INTRODUCTION TO NUMBER SYSTEM

The numbers play a very important role in our day to day life. We use

numbers to count, measure, compare and order things. We can order

the things in increasing or decreasing fashion.

You have already learnt the following points..... Let’s quickly recall: -

Smallest 6-digit number is 1,00,000.It is read as 1 Lakh.

Greatest 6–digit number is 9,99,999.It is read as Nine lakh ninety nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine.

    Similarly ,

Smallest 7-digit number is 10,00,000.It is read as 10 Lakh.

Greatest 7-digit number is 99,99,999.It is read as Ninety nine lakh ninety nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine.

Smallest 8-digit number is 1,00,00,000. It is read as 100 Lakh or 1 crore.

Greatest 8-digit number is 9,99,99,999. It is read as Nine crore ninety nine lakh ninety nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine.

If we add 1 to this number we will get the smallest 9-digit

number = 10,00,00,000 . It is read as Ten crore.

Greatest 9-digit number is 99,99,99,999. It is read as Ninety nine crore ninety nine lakh ninety nine thousand nine hundred ninety

    nine.

If we add 1 to this number we will get the smallest 10-digit

number = 1,00,00,00,000 . It is read as One arab or One

    hundred crore.

    Indian Numeral System

Let us consider a number, say 225. Notice that the digit 2 is used twice in this

number. Both of them have a different value. We differentiate them by stating

their place value, which is defined as the numerical value of a digit on the basis

    https://byjus.com/maths/place-value/

  • Montfort School, DelhiMontfort School, Delhi

of its position in a number. So the place value of the leftmost 2 is Hundreds

while the one in the center is Tens.

Coming back to the Indian numeral system, the place values of digits go in the

sequence of Ones, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, Ten Thousands, Lakhs, Ten

    Lakhs, Crores and so on.

In the number 10,23,45,678 the place values of each digit are:

    8 – Ones

    7 – Tens

    6 – Hundreds

    5 – Thousands

    4 – Ten Thousands

    3 – Lakhs

    2 – Ten Lakhs

    0 – Crores

    1 – Ten Crores

    NOTE -:

Digit in the same period are read together .

    Placement of Comma

Commas are placed in the large numbers to help us read and write them easily

    and to separate the periods.

As per Indian numeral system, the first comma is placed after the hundreds place post which they are placed after every two digits. E.g.,

    1,23,45,67,890 .

    different periods . Example -

    The number 25,30,62,158 can also be written as 25 30 62 158 .

    3. Digits in the same period are read together and the name of the period

( except the ones period ) is read together.

Example – The number 15,83,72,609 is read as Fifteen crore eighty three lakh

seventy two thousand six hundred nine.

    4. As per Indian numeral system, the first comma is placed after the hundreds
