Wisewordsspoken,butevenmorespecifically,earlylearningeducationisafargreatertoolfor
success.Studieshaveshownthatachild’searliestyearsofdevelopmentarethemostcritical.
Thevastmajorityofneuronsaredevelopedbetweenbirthandagethree,asthisisthebrain’s
peakcapacitytoretainnewinformation.Sincechildrenaremostreceptivetoinformationata
youngage,earlylearningexposureplaysanessentialroleinfosteringmentaldevelopment.
Scienceshowsthattakinginnewsights,soundsandinformationplaysaparamountcomponent
intheformationofactiveneuralpathways.
Dr.MariaMontessoriwasthefirsteducatortorealizethecapacityofyoungchildrentolearnandtosystematicallyexaminehowtheyoungchildlearnsbest.Shebelievedthatallchildrenhaveanaturaldesiretolearnandgiventheopportunitywillabsorbeverythingintheirculture
andenvironment.Sheidentifiedthatthemostsensitiveperiodforlearningwastheperiod
betweenbirthandagesix.TheMontessorimethodhasbeenprovenforover100yearsandis
knownandtaughtworldwide.
TheMontessoriphilosophyandcurriculumfostersaloveoflearningandself-growth.Through
theworkchildrendeveloptoolsforlearningthatwillpreparethemforlife.
InHerbook“TheAbsorbentMind”,Dr.Montessoriwrote,

EarlyChildhoodDevelopment/Pre-Primary.
Individualcoursetrainers/lecturersareresponsibleforthedesignoflearningprogrammesthat
areconsistentwiththelearningoutcomesandappropriatetostudent’sinterests’andneeds.
Thecourseisdesignedtoprovidetheprospectiveteacherwithopportunitiestoacquirethe
specificknowledge,skillsandattitudesnecessarytoeffectivelysuperviseanEarlyLearning
Environment,bothMontessoriandnon-MontessoriwithintheNamibiancontext.

PurposeofthePre-primaryQualification
1. ToprovideaccesstoarecognizedECDqualificationthatincludesaMontessoribias.
2. ToenablestudentstoplanandimplementanECD/Montessorilearningprogramme
basedonknowledgeofchilddevelopmentfrom2½to86yearsandworkwithchildreninaspecificphaseworktowardsachievingthelearningoutcomesofGrade0orR.

3. Toimprovecommunity-basedECDservicesforyoungchildrenbyraisingthelevelofECD

Forthisreason,ithasbecomeessentialforHeadstartMontessoriTeacherTrainingCollegeto
addafurthercomponenttotheirbouquetofMontessoriteachingdiplomas.Thisistoallow
graduatestofillsomeofthevacanciesforhighlytrainedEarlyChildhoodPractionerswithinour
country.
TheLevel6diplomaisanadjuncttoanddoesnotreplacetheoriginalLevel5diplomaofferedby
thisinstitutionthathasjustbeenextendedtofulfildemand.
ThereremainsanexitrouteforLevel5attheconclusionofthethirdyear.

Admission
TheHeadstartMontessoriTeacherTrainingCollegedoesnotdiscriminate,intheirpolicyof
admission,onthebasisofethnicity,religion,orsex,andcomplieswiththeprovisionsofthe
policiesandproceduresofNamibia,SouthAfricaandtheSADCcountriesandiscommittedto
assistingalltogainreasonableaccesstoHigherEducationbut,
§ HeadstartMontessoriTeacherTrainingCollegehasadjustedtheirtraditionalentry
requirementstofacilitateamoreequity-drivenstudentbody.
§ StudentsmustfurnishtheTrainingCollegewiththenamesandaddressesofthree
referees(notfamilymembers)whowillvouchforthestudent’scharacter,general
educationalabilityandfitnesstoworkwithchildren.
§ Ifyoubelongtoagroup,ofwhatevernature,whichrequiresyounotbeingableto
attendcertainfunctionsatcertaintimes,pleasefeelfreetodiscussthatneedwiththe
ProgrammeDirectororPrincipalwhowilldoherutmosttoaccommodateyou.
§ Ifyoubelievethatyouhaveahistorical,physical,emotionalorsociologicalcondition
thatmightneedspecialconsiderationtoenableyoutosuccessfullycompletethe

Therearefourpossibleentryroutes:
1. BeinpossessionofaMontessoriLevel5EarlyChildhood(Montessori)Diplomainwhich
caseyoucanstartatthe240creditmark.
2. Maturestudents(over24)whomaynothaveachievedtheminimumlevelofeducation
shouldapplyinthenormalmanner.Duringthefirstyearofstudy,thestudentwillbe
closelymonitored,assistedwherenecessary,butwillonlybeallowedtocontinueifthey
successfullyachievetherequiredpassinallareaseachyearofstudy.
3. Beover18yearsofageandbeinpossessionof:
a. ANamibiaSeniorSecondaryCertificate(NSSC)havingapassinfoursubjects,
oneofwhichmustbeEnglish,withaminimumof21points.

RecognitionofPriorLearningPolicy(RPL)
RecognitionofPriorLearningistheprocesswherebypeople’spriorlearningcanbeformally
recognisedintermsofalreadyregisteredqualificationsand/orunitstandards,regardlessof
whereandhowthelearningwasattained.
RPLacknowledgesthatpeopleneverstoplearning,whetherittakesplaceformallyatan
educationalinstitution,orwhetherithappensinformally.
TheprocessofRPLisasfollows:
• Identifyingwhatapersonknowsandcando;
• Matchingtheperson’sknowledge,skillsandexperiencetospecificstandardsandthe
associatedassessmentcriteriaofourqualification;
• Assessingthelearningagainstthosestandards;and
• Creditingthepersonforskills,knowledgeandexperiencebuiltupthroughformal,
informalandnon-formallearningthatoccurredinthepast
Inpracticewhatthismeansisthatalearneroranemployee’snon-traditionalornon-formal
experienceandlearningcanberecognised.

OnlyinexceptionalcircumstanceswilladmissionofstudentsthroughanRPLroutebeallowedto
exceed10%ofthetotalnumberofstudentsintheprogramme.
DurationofCourse
Thediplomaprogrammesaredesignedtobecompletedinthree(ifexitatLevel5)orfouryears
usingtheflexi-timemodeloflearning/teachingthatallowsthestudenttocontinuetowork/care

• Arrivingoncampuspropertyundertheinfluenceofalcoholordrugs.Forcibleremovable
bysecuritymaybenecessary.• IncorrectinformationdeliberatelygivenontheApplicationform.• Non-compliancewiththerequirementsofthecourse.

WithdrawalorCancellationofApplication(Registration)Procedure
1.Afacultymeetingwiththestudentwishingtowithdraworcanceltheirregistrationisheldto
establishthereasonsforthesame.
2.Inthecaseofpregnancyorillness,orfinancialhardship,adeferralofthecourseforuptotwoyearscanbearrangedwithoutre-registration.Anewagreementwillbeenteredintowherebythestudentwillberesponsibleforthepayment

TheHeadstartMontessoriTeacherTrainingCollegeiscoveredbymeansofa‘PublicLiability’
insurancepolicyforanypersonwhousesthefacilitiesoftheCollege.Itisuptotheindividual
studenttoascertainifthisfacilityisavailableinanyotherschoolthatisvisited.
FutureEmployment
HeadstartMontessoriTrainingCollegecannotguaranteeemploymentplacementsforitsgraduates,butvacanciesinschoolsarecirculatedtograduatesandstudentsastheycometothenoticeoftheCollege.
GrievancePolicy
Ifalecturer,trainer,staffmemberorstudentassociatedwithHeadstartTrainingCollegewishes
toexpressacomplaintrelatingtoaprogrammeoractionofanemployee,oranyotherperson
associatedwiththeCollegehe/sheisencouragedtoutilisethefollowingprocess:
-Allcomplaintsandresponsesneedtobeformalisedinwriting,detailingthecomplaint,
thename(s)oftheprogrammeofficialoremployeeinvolvedinthematterandany

Studentsareexpectedtoobservethesamestandardsofscholarlyintegrityastheiracademic

TheinitialCostofmarkingassignmentsisinclusiveinthepriceofthecourse,however,
