Wisewordsspoken,butevenmorespecifically,earlylearningeducationisafargreatertoolfor

success.Studieshaveshownthatachild’searliestyearsofdevelopmentarethemostcritical.

Thevastmajorityofneuronsaredevelopedbetweenbirthandagethree,asthisisthebrain’s

peakcapacitytoretainnewinformation.Sincechildrenaremostreceptivetoinformationata

youngage,earlylearningexposureplaysanessentialroleinfosteringmentaldevelopment.

Scienceshowsthattakinginnewsights,soundsandinformationplaysaparamountcomponent

intheformationofactiveneuralpathways.

Dr.MariaMontessoriwasthefirsteducatortorealizethecapacityofyoungchildrentolearnandtosystematicallyexaminehowtheyoungchildlearnsbest.Shebelievedthatallchildrenhaveanaturaldesiretolearnandgiventheopportunitywillabsorbeverythingintheirculture

andenvironment.Sheidentifiedthatthemostsensitiveperiodforlearningwastheperiod

betweenbirthandagesix.TheMontessorimethodhasbeenprovenforover100yearsandis

knownandtaughtworldwide.

TheMontessoriphilosophyandcurriculumfostersaloveoflearningandself-growth.Through

theworkchildrendeveloptoolsforlearningthatwillpreparethemforlife.

InHerbook“TheAbsorbentMind”,Dr.Montessoriwrote,

"Themostimportantperiodoflifeisnottheageofuniversitystudies,butthefirstone,theperiodfrombirthtotheageofsix.Forthatisthetimewhenman'sintelligenceitself,hisgreatestimplementisbeingformed.Butnotonlyhisintelligence;thefulltotalityofhispsychicpowers…Atnootheragehasthechildagreaterneedofanintelligenthelp,andanyobstaclethatimpedeshiscreativeworkwilllessenthechancehehasofachievingperfection."4

PsychologistshaveconfirmedMontessoriEarlyChildhoodEducationTheoriesRecentpsychologicalstudiesbasedoncontrolledresearchhaveconfirmedthesetheoriesofDr.

Montessori.Afteranalysingthousandsofsuchstudies,Dr.BenjaminS.BloomoftheUniversity

ofChicago,wroteinStabilityandChangeinHumanCharacteristics,

"Fromconceptiontoage4,theindividualdevelops50%ofhismatureintelligence;fromages4to8hedevelopsanother30%…thiswouldsuggesttheveryrapidgrowthofintelligenceintheearlyyearsandthepossiblegreatinfluenceoftheearlyenvironmentonhisdevelopment."5

Individualcoursetrainers/lecturersareresponsibleforthedesignoflearningprogrammesthat

areconsistentwiththelearningoutcomesandappropriatetostudent’sinterests’andneeds.

PurposeofthePre-primaryQualification

InNamibia,itisvitalthatallchildren,regardlessofethnicityorculturalgroupgetthebest

possibleeducationavailable,itshouldn’tjustbetheprerogativeofchildrenattendingprivate

schools.

Forthisreason,ithasbecomeessentialforHeadstartMontessoriTeacherTrainingCollegeto

addafurthercomponenttotheirbouquetofMontessoriteachingdiplomas.Thisistoallow

graduatestofillsomeofthevacanciesforhighlytrainedEarlyChildhoodPractionerswithinour

country.

TheLevel6diplomaisanadjuncttoanddoesnotreplacetheoriginalLevel5diplomaofferedby

thisinstitutionthathasjustbeenextendedtofulfildemand.

ThereremainsanexitrouteforLevel5attheconclusionofthethirdyear.

Admission

TheHeadstartMontessoriTeacherTrainingCollegedoesnotdiscriminate,intheirpolicyof

admission,onthebasisofethnicity,religion,orsex,andcomplieswiththeprovisionsofthe

policiesandproceduresofNamibia,SouthAfricaandtheSADCcountriesandiscommittedto

assistingalltogainreasonableaccesstoHigherEducationbut,

§ HeadstartMontessoriTeacherTrainingCollegehasadjustedtheirtraditionalentry

requirementstofacilitateamoreequity-drivenstudentbody.

§ StudentsmustfurnishtheTrainingCollegewiththenamesandaddressesofthree

referees(notfamilymembers)whowillvouchforthestudent’scharacter,general

educationalabilityandfitnesstoworkwithchildren.

§ Ifyoubelongtoagroup,ofwhatevernature,whichrequiresyounotbeingableto

attendcertainfunctionsatcertaintimes,pleasefeelfreetodiscussthatneedwiththe

ProgrammeDirectororPrincipalwhowilldoherutmosttoaccommodateyou.

Therearefourpossibleentryroutes:

1. BeinpossessionofaMontessoriLevel5EarlyChildhood(Montessori)Diplomainwhich

caseyoucanstartatthe240creditmark.

2. Maturestudents(over24)whomaynothaveachievedtheminimumlevelofeducation

shouldapplyinthenormalmanner.Duringthefirstyearofstudy,thestudentwillbe

closelymonitored,assistedwherenecessary,butwillonlybeallowedtocontinueifthey

successfullyachievetherequiredpassinallareaseachyearofstudy.

3. Beover18yearsofageandbeinpossessionof:

a. ANamibiaSeniorSecondaryCertificate(NSSC)havingapassinfoursubjects,

oneofwhichmustbeEnglish,withaminimumof21points.

5. Theapplicationforenrolmentformiscompletedbytheprospectivestudent.

6. Thefulldepositispaidandallthebooksarereceivedandsignedforbythestudent.

7. ThestudentsignstheFinancialContracttoshowthattheyarelegallyresponsibleforthemonthlypaymentstocompletetheannualfees.

8. Thereisatwoweek‘coolingoff’periodafterregistration,beforereceiptofanystudy

Re-Registrationforfollowingyear

Allcurrentstudentsneedtocompleteanewregistrationformforeachyearbeforetheendof

De-RegistrationProcedure

RecognitionofPriorLearningistheprocesswherebypeople’spriorlearningcanbeformally

recognisedintermsofalreadyregisteredqualificationsand/orunitstandards,regardlessof

whereandhowthelearningwasattained.

RPLacknowledgesthatpeopleneverstoplearning,whetherittakesplaceformallyatan

educationalinstitution,orwhetherithappensinformally.

TheprocessofRPLisasfollows:

• Identifyingwhatapersonknowsandcando;

• Matchingtheperson’sknowledge,skillsandexperiencetospecificstandardsandthe

associatedassessmentcriteriaofourqualification;

• Assessingthelearningagainstthosestandards;and

• Creditingthepersonforskills,knowledgeandexperiencebuiltupthroughformal,

informalandnon-formallearningthatoccurredinthepast

Inpracticewhatthismeansisthatalearneroranemployee’snon-traditionalornon-formal

experienceandlearningcanberecognised.

WithdrawalorCancellationofApplication(Registration)Procedure

1.Afacultymeetingwiththestudentwishingtowithdraworcanceltheirregistrationisheldto

establishthereasonsforthesame.

2.Inthecaseofpregnancyorillness,orfinancialhardship,adeferralofthecourseforuptotwoyearscanbearrangedwithoutre-registration.Anewagreementwillbeenteredintowherebythestudentwillberesponsibleforthepayment

ofthenewfeeslessanyamountalreadypreviouslypaid.

3.Ifthereason(s)forwithdrawal/cancellationis/areduetoanyotherreasonthanstatedin#2,

allpreviouspaymentswillbeforfeitedforthwith.

TheHeadstartMontessoriTeacherTrainingCollegeiscoveredbymeansofa‘PublicLiability’

insurancepolicyforanypersonwhousesthefacilitiesoftheCollege.Itisuptotheindividual

studenttoascertainifthisfacilityisavailableinanyotherschoolthatisvisited.

FutureEmployment

HeadstartMontessoriTrainingCollegecannotguaranteeemploymentplacementsforitsgraduates,butvacanciesinschoolsarecirculatedtograduatesandstudentsastheycometothenoticeoftheCollege.

GrievancePolicy

Ifalecturer,trainer,staffmemberorstudentassociatedwithHeadstartTrainingCollegewishes

toexpressacomplaintrelatingtoaprogrammeoractionofanemployee,oranyotherperson

associatedwiththeCollegehe/sheisencouragedtoutilisethefollowingprocess:

-Allcomplaintsandresponsesneedtobeformalisedinwriting,detailingthecomplaint,

thename(s)oftheprogrammeofficialoremployeeinvolvedinthematterandany

otherspecificstatementsrelativetothecauseofaction.

-AllcomplaintsmustinitiallybeaddressedtotheProgrammeDirector.

-Ifthemattercannotbeamicablyresolvedwithin14daysofreceiptoftheinitial

PlagiarismandCheating

Studentsareexpectedtoobservethesamestandardsofscholarlyintegrityastheiracademic

andprofessionalcounterparts.Students,whoarefoundtohaveengagedinunethicalacademic

behaviour,includingthepracticesdescribedbelow,aresubjecttopenaltybyHeadstart

MontessoriTeacherTrainingCollege.

Inthisregulation,"work"isdefinedasincludingthefollowing:writtenmaterial,laboratoryand

computerwork,musicalorartworks,oralreports,audio-visualortapedpresentations,lesson

plans,andmaterialinanymediumsubmittedtoaninstructorforgradingpurposes.

Plagiarism

Astudentcommitsplagiarismwhenheorshe:

• submitstheworkofanotherpersonasoriginalwork

• givesinadequateattributiontoanauthororcreatorwhoseworkisincorporatedinto

thestudent'swork,includingfailingtoindicateclearly(throughacceptedpractices

withinthedisciplinesuchasfootnotes,internalreferences,andthecreditingofall

verbatimpassagesthroughindentationsoflongerpassagesortheuseofquotation

marks)theinclusionofanotherindividual'swork

• paraphrasesmaterialfromasourcewithoutsufficientacknowledgementasdescribed

Studentswhoareindoubtastowhatconstitutesplagiarisminaparticularinstanceshould

consulttheircourseinstructor.

AidingOtherstoCheatItisanoffencetohelpothersorattempttohelpotherstoengageinanyoftheconduct

describedabove.

EnforcementandPenaltiesFacultiesanddepartmentshavetheauthoritytoenforceproperstandardsofacademicintegrity

bywhateverinternalproceduresseemmostappropriatetotheirdisciplines.Inallcases,a

studentsuspectedofplagiarismorcheatingmustbenotifiedofanallegation(whichmustbe

documentedfullybytheinstructor),andthestudentmustbegivenareasonableopportunityto

Ifthereisconvincingevidencetosupportanallegation,penaltieswillbeimposedbythe

academicdepartment,thefaculty,orthePrincipal.Theacademicdepartmentinwhichthe

courseisofferedmayimposepenaltiesonlyatthecourselevel;thefacultyinwhichthestudent

isregisteredmayimposepenaltiesonlyattheprogramlevel;andonlythePrincipalcansuspend

astudenteithertemporarilyorpermanently.Penaltiesmaybecombinedwithinorbetween

levels.Academicstaffhaveadutytoensurethatthepunishmentfitstheoffence;e.g.,normally,

forafirstoffender,onlypenaltiesatthecourselevelshouldbeimposed.

AssignmentSubmissions

Assignmentsareusedbythecollegetoensurethatthestudentisgainingtherequisite

informationasthecourseprogresses.Ifassignmentsarenotsubmittedwedonotknowifyou

arereadytowriteyourexams,youmayhaveincorrectinformation!

TheinitialCostofmarkingassignmentsisinclusiveinthepriceofthecourse,however,

• Allassignmentsandtherelevantpracticalsmustbesubmittedandmarkedandsigned

BEFOREanyexaminationmaybewritten.

• AllassignmentMUSTbesubmittedontime.

• LateassignmentswillmeanapenaltyofN$50perassignmentwillbeleviedandmustbe

HarassmentPolicy

Headstart Montessori Teacher Training College is committed to a policy of equality of

environment and culture in which harassment is known to be unacceptable and where

individualshavetheconfidencetodealwithharassmentwithoutfearofridiculeorreprisals.

Thispolicyaimstoensurethatifharassmentorbullyingdoesoccur,adequateproceduresare

readilyavailabletodealwiththeproblemandpreventitreoccurring.Harassmentcanhavea

detrimental effect upon the health, confidence,morale, learning and performance of those

affectedbyit.

Stepstotakeifyouareharassed/bullied-whattodoandwhotocontact:Ifyoufeelthatyouare being subjected to any degree of sexual, racial or other form of personal harassment,

includingbullying,donotfeelthatitisyourfaultorthatyouhavetotolerateit.

There are variousways inwhich you can dealwith harassment from simply asking for it to

stop,throughtomakingaformalcomplaint.Ifyoufeelyouarethevictimofharassmentyou

should keep a written record for all relevant incidents, including dates and times and if

appropriatethenamesofanywitnessestotheincidentorincidents.

StepOne-informalactionTellthepersontheirbehaviourisoffensiveandaskthemtostopIfatallpossible,tellthepersonthattheirbehaviouriscausingyouoffenceandthatyouwant

theunacceptablebehaviourtostop.Frequentlytheharasserisunawarethattheiractionsare

inappropriate or objectionable or there may have been a misunderstanding or

misinterpretation.Youcanusephraseslike:

'Ifindyourbehaviour/remarkoffensiveandIwantyoutostop'.

Evenwhere thebehaviourwas intentional,a swiftandclear indication that thebehaviour is

objectivesandsucceedtotheirfullestability.

ManystudentsapplyingtostudyatHeadstartMontessoriTeacherTrainingCollegeare

sponsoredby:

• employers,

• non-governmentalorganisations,

• schools,

• churchesand

• otherindividuals,parents,relativesetc.

Thecollegehasputapolicyintoplacetoensurethatsponsorsandstudentsadheretotherules

ofthecollege.

Duetothedifferenttypesofsponsorships,eachsponsorhastheirownsetofrequirementsfrom

theprospectivestudentand/orcollege.

Thispolicycontainswhatthecollegerequiresfromthesponsorandprospectivestudent.

Nominationandapplicationprocedures

Sponsors/studentsmustverifythattheirSponsorshipCandidatesmeetthecriteriadescribedin

theadmittancepolicyofthecollegeasfoundintheprospectus,whicheachprospectivestudent

receivespriortoadmittance.

AllSponsorsmustcompletetheSponsorshipVerificationForm(attached)andthestudentmust

send/bringthistothecollegebeforefinalregistrationcantakeplace.Failuretosendtheform,

togetherwithconfirmationoftheinitialpaymenthavingbeendepositedwillprevent

registrationforstudy.

renewedapplication,thisisdependentontheSponsoranditistheresponsibilityofthestudent

toenquireifthereareanyrestrictionstothesponsorship.

Sponsorsshouldonlyrenewsponsorshipforafurtheryear/courseofstudyiftherecipient

successfullycompletedthepreviousyear.Thisshouldavoid‘careerstudents’orstudentswho

arenotreallyinterested/capableoftheircourseofstudy.

Applicationprocedureswhensponsorshipsareinvolved:Itisimportantthatthisprocessisstartedearly,otherwisetheprospectivestudentmaymisstheregistrationdeadline.
