From the Principal- Mrs. Gall: What is Math Fluency? Math fact fluency is the ability to recall the answers to basic facts automatically and without hesitation. Fact flu-ency is gained through significant practice, with mastery of basic math facts being the goal. Why is Math Fluency Important? Information processing theory supports the view that automaticity in math facts is fundamental to success in many area of higher mathematics. Without the ability to retrieve facts directly or automatically, students are likely to

experience a high cognitive load as they perform a range of complex tasks. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics states that students who cannot retrieve basic facts easily get lost and often cannot follow the logic of an explanation given by the teacher or a peer when the problems are embedded within more complex mathematic operations, such as simple algebra or long division. How Can You Help your Child Practice? First and foremost make learning fun! Spend at least 15 minutes on 4 separate days practicing basic facts. A few ways to prac-tice are: 1. Dice Game: Grab a pair of dice and roll, add or subtract the numbers up. Each time a correct answer is given, a point is earned. The first one to 20 is the winner! 2. Playing cards: Divide a deck of traditional cards into two equal piles, one for each player. Each player will lay two cards down at a time. Both players then add or subtract their cards. The one with the highest answer gets to keep all four cards. The one with the largest keep pile wins. 3. Tic-Tac-Toe Fact Fun! Use a deck of math flash cards. Players must answer the math fact before putting an “X” or an “O” on the Tic-Tac-Toe board the first to get Tic-Tac-Toe wins. 4. Math Facts Book: Using your math facts flashcards, have your child select a card each day and ask him or her to cre-ate a story based on the card. For example, your child may select a card that reads 5 minus 3. They could then create a story about how they had 5 balloons and 3 flew away, how many did they have left? You could go a step further and have them write and illustrate the story in a math fact journal. The ultimate goal is to make learning fun! 5. Work on each fact family in isolation first and then slowly combine 2 families and then add in more as your child becomes more fluent. *There are several websites that would be appropriate for this practice, as well as traditional flashcards and worksheets. Set goals for your child or let them set their own goals and graph or chart their progress so that they can see their growth. Have them practice with a timer to encourage automaticity. The fluency goal should be 2 seconds per fact with 30 correct facts in 1 minute. www.interventioncentral.org/teacher-resources/math-fluency-generator-math-for-kids www.factmonster.com/math/flashcards.html www.abcya.com/math_facts_games.htm www.fun4thebrain.com Reminder About Wintery Conditions: Our School-to-Parent Notification Service will alert you to school delays, closings and early dismissals.
