In 1701, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the legendary French explorer, came upon a fortune-teller. Cadillac told the mystic that he’d been having strange dreams about a small red devil. The fortune-teller told Cadillac that the devil he’d dreamt of was none other than the Nain Rouge, a little red imp that represented the Frenchman's negative emotions – his ambition, his anger, his pride and his envy – everything that would hold him back. Worst of all, the fortune-teller told him that the
Nain was a harbinger of doom. If Cadillac settled near the straits between Michigan and Ontario, the soothsayer's prediction was that success, while not impossible, would still be a long time coming. As history records, the headstrong Cadillac built his encampment in that exact place, his dreams about the red imp notwithstanding. As the tale goes, the Frenchman then encountered the physical manifestation of the Nain, who taunted him without mercy, only to have the volatile Frenchman chase him away with a stick. All of which leads to the first Sunday after the Vernal
Equinox, March 24, when, having survived another Michigan winter, thousands of modern day Greater Detroiters gather en masse to banish the embodiment of all the negativity that holds Detroiters back — the 10th Annual Marche' du Nain Rouge. On this special Sunday, the Nain Rouge (pictured)
will again confront the throng of marchers in Cass Park, where he’ll espouse his evil plans for the City’s demise, and where the gathered Greater Detroiters will (hopefully) overwhelm the Nain with their cumulative positive thoughts for a better rest of the year.Marchers are encouraged to wear masks and
costumes and even bring DIY chariots. Neighborhood groups can vie for cash prizes for the best floats. There's no cost to join in and afterwards, marchers are encouraged to stick around for the TBA after-parties. Leading up to the Marche’ many businesses are
hosting events during the Fete du Nain (Festival of the Dwarf), from Monday, March 18 to Sunday, March 24. Some of the participants of this year's Fete du Nain are Honest John's, Avalon International Breads, Blick Art Materials, The Majestic, Union Street, and Traffic Jam, among many others. The Marche’ du Nain Rouge begins at 1 p.m. at the
intersection of W. Canfield and 2nd Ave., in Midtown Detroit’s Cultural District. For more information and an up-to-date schedule,
see marchedunainrouge.com.

We lost another great with last week's pass-ing of Ted Lindsay, Hall of Fame hockey stand-out with the Detroit Red Wings. With a heart larger
than life, Lindsay was always the gentleman with whomever he met. Whether it was a request to speak at a hockey banquet, an autograph-seeker or an offer to help raise mon-ey to support autism (his favorite cause), Terrible Ted was there.I first met Lindsay in
the late 1970's while producing the Ron Cameron Sportstalk show on then-WXYZ radio. He had an up-and-
down relationship with "Scoop" Cameron be-cause of the host's tendency to break news about Lindsay when he was Detroit's general manager.Once Lindsay was away from the Red Wings front office, he was
very willing to come on as a guest and discuss the good times he had as a four-time Stanley Cup champion in Detroit.Lindsay teamed with two other Hall of Fame members - Gordie
Howe and Sid Abel - to form Detroit's Production Line, a prolific offensive weapon that few NHL teams could match in the 1950's. Lindsay, despite his smaller size, was talented as both an offen-sive weapon and a most-feisty defender as he protected line-mates Howe and Abel. The glory days at old Olympia Stadium were a treasured time
in Detroit sports history. The Red Wings were at the pinnacle in the old Original Six which included clubs in Boston, Chicago, Mon-treal, New York and Toronto.Red Wings historian Greg Innis admitted on WWJ radio last week
that Lindsay would refuse to fraternize with opposing players as their teams often traveled on the same train from Windsor to games in Toronto or Montreal. Ted was that much of a competitor!Sadly, we also lost Lulu Harwell, the wife of the late Ernie Har-
well, the Detroit Tigers Hall of Fame broadcaster. Miss Lulu, as Ernie affectionately called his wife of more than 60 years, was constantly at his side during a career that took the family from Atlanta to New York to Baltimore to Detroit. It's tough saying farewell to people we know and admire in De-
troit sports. As time marches on and we bid goodbye to the likes of Ted Lindsay and Lulu Harwell, let's recall the joy they brought to our city and state. For that we can always be grateful and blessed.

Leonard Bernstein’s opera Candide was performed by MOT last weekend at the Ma-comb Community Center for the Arts. It is showing again this coming weekend at the Berman Center for the Per-forming Arts (6600 Maple Road) on Saturday, March 16, 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, March 17, 2:30 p.m.I saw this show on opening
night. A basic philosophical principle in Voltaire’s original satire, as mirrored in Bern-stein’s opera is “This world is the best of all possible worlds as it is the only world we have." However, coming to this con-clusion involves us in the life story of Candide, who manages to survive many world trag-edies. This production of Candide is
set up with the famous arias as well as a great deal of spoken monologues. The conductor, Daniel Black, together with the small orchestra were at the back of the stage, among other things allowing us to think of them as the background sets. The singers tended to be on the center stage. The general
feeling was very live, with am-ple movements of the actors/singers, who allowed routine furnishings to symbolize the plot described. The main char-acters were portrayed by the MOT Studio Artists: Michael Day as a most convincing Can-dide, Harry Greenleaf as Dr. Pangloss, Allen Michael Jones as Maximillian, Cheyanne Coss as a vibrant Paquette. Kath-erine DeYoung as the old lady was extremely enticing with her monologues as well as body movements. In addition, I would like to
mention Fred Buchalter, who was extremely good in his por-trayal of Cacambo in addition to his other functions in this opera. This production of Can-dide reveals great humor, but it also provides much thoughtful analyses about our own world. One technical shortcoming in the presentation at the Ma-comb Center venue: The super-titles were rather difficult to read due to the combination of screen contrast, size and light-ing. Hopefully this should be rem-
edied at the Berman Center.
Michigan Opera Theatre is welcoming back the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for their 12th visit to the Detroit Opera House, March 15-17. The performance will be part of their commemorative 60th an-niversary tour and includes the Company’s first two-act ballet Lazarus, about the life of their founder, based on his experi-ences. Lazarus, commissioned for their 60th anniversary tour, is the Company’s first two-act ballet. It examines Civil Rights through time and questions how much has changed or hasn’t changed since Ailey formed his company in the late 50's. It is the third in a series of works by acclaimed hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris, following Home, about the club culture around AIDS, and Exo-dus, about police brutality and activism. Ailey will perform the work during its March 15th and 16th performances. The DSO is performing this
weekend with Rafael Payare, conductor, and Yoonshin Song, solo violin in Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5. In addition, the program includes Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. Rafael Payare was assistant to Lorin Maa-zel at the Castleton Festival. In January 2018, he was guest conductor at the San Diego Symphony. In February 2018, the orchestra named Payare its next music director, effec-tive July 2019. On Tuesday, March 19, 7:30
p.m., Christ Church Cranbrook (470 Church Road, Bloomfield Hills) is presenting the Morgen-stern Trio (pictured) in concert. The program includes: Trio on
Popular Irish Tunes (1925) by Frank Martin, Piano Trio Op. 49 in d Minor (1839) by Felix Men-delssohn, and Klavierto D929 e-flat major (1827) by Franz Schubert . Call (248) 504-6301 for fur-
ther information.

Jungle ThieveryBy Don Campbell
Triple Frontier is the story of five former Special Forc-es operatives that plotted to take out a drug lord and steal his money. Ben Affleck plays Tom
Redfly Davis, a less than successful realtor ap-proached by Oscar Isaac (Santiago Pope Garcia), who offers Redfly a quick, in and out recon job for $17k. Being a divorced parent
who could use the money, Redfly reluctantly agrees to join the team. The other members are
Charlie Hunnam (of Sons of Anarchy fame) as Wil-
liam Ironhead Miller, a part time boxer; Garrett Hed-lund as Ben Miller; and Pe-dro Pascal (from Game of Thrones), as Francisco Cat-fish Morales. For the first time since leaving the ser-vice, they plan to use their military skills for personal gain. But, the simple recon in
the jungles of South Ameri-ca quickly turns into a full-on mission. At first every-thing goes as planned but then, the inevitable sur-prises and problems ensue. Their Special Forces ex-
perience and military pro-fessionalism helps them
greatly, but as things wend to the south, a moral dilem-ma surfaces — and it's not just greed. The movie has several
twists, although the first one was predictable. With decent action and
plausible scenarios (along with some slow bits), there was also an element of sus-pense. Directed by Academy
Award winner J. C Chandor (Margin Call, All is Lost) and co-written by Mark Boal
(The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty). Triple Frontier is yet an-
other well done Netflix original and is set for a lim-ited theatrical release. But as an unconventional heist movie it's worth seeing.
