Photography of the American Road Trip at DIAThe Open Road: Photography

and the American Road Trip is now showing at the Detroit Institute of Arts, now t h r oug h Su nday, September 11.This is the first exhibition

to explore the story of the American photographic road trip. A book, also called The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip, will also accompany this highly regarded exhibit. Images document the evolution of American car culture, the idea of the open road and how photographers embraced America. A m o n g t h e 1 9

photographers featured are Robert Frank (whose 1955 road trip resulted i n h i s 1958 b o ok T he Americans), Ed Ruscha, Stephen Shore and Alec Soth. After World War II, the American road trip began appearing prominently in literature, music, movies and photography. The myth of the American

frontier has long engaged artists, but it was seminal trips through America by key photographers, such as Walker Evans and Edward Weston, in the 1930's and

1940's that encouraged many more photographers to purposefully embark on similar journeys during the post-World War II era. They created a body of work about America and their place in it. This exhibition is organized

by Aperture Foundation, New York, David Campany and Denise Wolff, Curators, and is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. For information, call (313)

Ruth's Music Notes...Ruth Crystal-Zaromp

Whoa! The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival has concluded for this year, one with a great many new elements of nuance which served as a phenomenal learning experience. However, absorbing all this material, especially of the new kind, was not an easy task for those few like myself who attended most of those events. One immense help in the study of this music was the morning workshops, which were free to anybody with series tickets who wished to participate. This year, these workshops also served as nice get-togethers to create better acquaintances with colleagues and friends.

One of the enticing programs this week took place at Adat Shalom Synagogue. Trio Honore performed Mendelssohn’s first Piano Trio in D Minor. Then the Nash ensemble performed Schubert’s String Quartet No. 12, Quartettsatz which was exceptional. The singing of Cantor Gross was expressive and most artistically done. The English songs were in the vein of art songs and showed many delicate nuances.

The Nash Ensemble was well introduced on Wednesday, June 22, at Temple Beth El. Each of these performers are of impressive quality. The program concluded with the Trout Quintet, performed by Setzer, Dickinson, Paul Watkins, Kevin Brown, and Bax. The variation in the second movement of this piece, featuring a cello lead of Paul Watkins, was very touching and tended to remain with the listener.

The music of Piers Hellawell (Stone Composer-in-Residence) was presented to us in his free workshop on Monday, June 20 at 12 p.m. Upon entering the Alpert room at Temple Beth El, I was greeted with some horribe sounding screechy (Yikes!) noises that provided me with a sense of relief that in my entire life I have never made even one single solitary mistake on a string instrument. However, the genius of Hellawell showed itself when all of these sounds combined together to create a special texture of music. Here, the viola provided a smooth melodic sound that made all the rest very worthwhile. Hellawell presented

the idea that the performers may take different sections of his music and shuffle them around a bit, thus creating a new pattern in each performance that creates its own singular effect. There were a number of Hellawell’s compositions performed during this festival and I enjoyed every one of them.

One of the most enticing moments of the festival took place at Kerrytown Concert House on Sunday afternoon, June 26. It was the last performance of this festival. Three Rags for String Quartet by William Bolcom was presented. Even inasmuch that I am somewhat familiar with Bolcom’s music, hearing it performed by a string quartet provided a great deal of vitality and richness as well as some lighthearted elements. Also, we should recognize the leadership of Maury Okun, President and CEO since the inception of this magnificent series, and Artistic Director Paul Watkins, as well as numerous others, without whose efforts this series would not exist.

We'll be looking forward to next year’s Great Lakes Festival of Chamber Music.

We're also looking forward to a relatively quiet and relaxing month of July. I mentioned the July 4th performances last week and there are other performances of interest that will be taking

place this month. This is a very good month for spending some time at Kerrytown Concert House and the reader will find it helpful by looking at their website, kerrytownconcerthouse.com. The following features classical music events:

Friday, July 8, 8 p.m., Alvin Waddles, piano: Songs I Heard: My Classical Side. Celebrated Detroit pianist Alvin Waddles brings his diverse skill to a program of familiar, but not often performed, classical music.

Alvin Waddles has become known to me through the Rackham Symphony Choir. In addition to being a top-notch performer, he has a great sense of humor and is a fascinating entertainer.

There are three noteworthy performances set for the week after the Art Fair, Song Fest at 8 p.m. – Wednesday, July 27, Thursday, July 28, and Friday, July 29. The Wednesday and Thursday programs are free to the public. They are titled, Songs We Love to Sing and Chemins de l'amour: The Lyrical Legacy of Francis Poulenc. Jane Schoonmaker Rodgers and pianist Kevin Bylsma are serving as General Director and Music Director of these events. Friday's program will feature works by Stephen Sondheim & Kurt Weill. Performer names will be announced at a later date.
