By default, Gil uses his unique background in medi-cine and horses to perform hippo-therapy for many chil-dren with behavior and physical disabilities. Well, we certainly cant say this was a long, hot summer, can we?

First of all, it was a short summer and not too hot, either. My sister

usually visits anywhere between July and August every year for two

or three weeks. Last year and the year before we spent a lot of time in the swimming

pool playing rummy and badminton. This year it just wasnt that hot. Oh, yeah, we did

go in the pool and got a lot of sun but it just wasnt the same. Evenings were a little

cool most of the time and we had gallons and gallons of rain. Which, by the way, was

distressing her because she lives in California where they ration water. Theyre in themidst of a drought of Biblical proportions, as meteorologists like to say.

We lived in Pasadena, California for about 12 years thirty years ago, and during that

time there was a drought in Southern California (not of the magnitude they are facing

this year). To help conserve water, we put a brick in the toilet tank to use less water and

practiced the old If its yellow let it mellow. If its brown well you get the drift.

We only washed the car once a month and had to be very careful watering the yard.

Up here in the good ol northeast, our lawns usually turn a little crispy and brown late

in August. But not last year and not this year. Everything is green and still beautiful so

Im not going to complaint about all the rain. In fact, I never do. I dont mind the rain at

all.

I just complain about the COLD. Thats coming all too soon!!

Reflections: Talk to the Screen Cause

the Face Aint ListeningWritten by Rachel Essaff MaherWe have been having quite a bit of great weather lately, the sort of

sunny days that make you want to stay outside until winter comes

sneaking onto the scene. One days like these, I like to take my chil-

dren to the playground. There, they are able to run around while I

either chase after them or sit on a bench, soaking up sunlight while

watching them play.

Sometimes I am amazed at how much they can do and imagine. Today, my sons became

pirates aboard a picnic table pirate ship, and it was hilarious to watch them swashbuck-

ling away. Another little boy came over to play with them, and soon they were all

racing around the playground, climbing and swinging and sliding everywhere. The other

child climbed too high on the monkey bars and became frightened. In a panic, he looked

to his mother for help. He cried out to her. But she was staring down at her cell phone,

texting or playing a game or whatever, so she had not noticed his plight. His little face

was turning red, and he was trying so hard to be a big boy, but the tears started coming

anyway. I looked over at his mother. How could she not hear him? Pretty soon, he was

screaming with his little face pressed against the bars in defeat. But his mother did notnotice until I was lifting the poor kid down and consoling him myself. Then she was

furious with him, yelling at him for interrupting her cell time and yanking him by his

arm to their car, not trying to comfort him, not noticing his distress, and not even

bothering to thank the stranger who had done her job for her.

While this mothers inattentiveness and inaction might seem like a rarity, it is not.

Everywhere I go lately, there are parents on cell phones who do not hear or see their

own children. As much as I try to, I simply cannot understand the mass societal infatu-

ation and obsession with cell phones and their many apps. What could possibly be

more entertaining than watching your children run and play, using their imaginations

very much the same way as you once used yours? As these parents squint at their tiny

screens, their children are laughing and calling out to them as they scale the Mt. Everest

of jungle gyms: Mom! Dad! Watch this! Look at me! Other times, these children

are sitting in the gravel, with tears streaming down their sweet cherub cheeks, with

skinned knees that need to be treated with that most magical bandage: a gentle kiss and

a loving embrace.

I want to scream at these cell phone zombies sometimes. I want to tell them that theyare missing some of the most precious moments of their childrens lives: Look up!

Look up, you fools! Youre missing it! Youre missing it all!

But I have already learned one very important lesson about people with cell phones

if you want their attention at all, you have to send them a text
