We visit the church of St. Polycarp, first bishop and associate of John the Evangelist, and the Catholic cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. We then enjoy a free afternoon. Breakfast included. Monday, May 23 – Bursa One of the Seven Churches of the Revelation (2:12-17), Pergamum was renowned in ancient times for its great library and its medical center. Conquered by Alexander the Great and passing to the Attalid dynasty, Pergamum became the most powerful kingdom in Anatolia before being incorporated into the Roman Empire. We visit the Acropolis, Temple of Athena and the library before continuing to Bursa for overnight. Breakfast and dinner included. Tuesday, May 24 – Istanbul Bursa was the capital of Turkey before the capture of Constantinople in 1453. We visit the Green Mosque, one of the finest examples of Ottoman architecture, the old silk market in the covered bazaar and the citadel, and the old walled city at the top of the hill before crossing the Sea of Marmara to Istanbul. Breakfast and dinner included. Wednesday, May 25 – Istanbul Our full day starts with a visit to the Topkapi Palace, which overlooks the Bosphorus. Then we go to St. Sophia’s Basilica, built originally by Constantine. After lunch, we visit the impressive Blue Mosque, famous for its six minarets and beautiful blue Iznik tiles, and the Byzantine Hippodrome, where chariot races and competitive athletic events took place. We finish with a short visit to the bustling Grand Bazaar. Breakfast and dinner included. Thursday, May 26 – Return flight to Portland We depart from Istanbul airport for the journey home. Breakfast included. The tour price of $4,799* is based on a minimum of 30 passengers. Cancellation of the pilgrimage is possible if fewer than 30 sign up. ACCOMMODATIONS: Pilgrims stay in first class hotels, based on double occupancy with private facilities. Single room supplement is $650, based on availability. If pilgrims cancel after Feb. 17, 2011 or after tickets are written, whichever comes first, 100 percent of airfare will be forfeited by passenger. All airfares are subject to government approval and may change without notice. INSURANCE: We recommend everyone purchase travel insurance. We urge this because insurance is not included in the tour price. Because of the cost of medical care outside the United States, and since Medicare does not provide coverage outside the U.S., there is the possibility that your own insurance provider may not cover you. Additionally, high costs are associated with escorted air evacuation. You will receive a travel insurance brochure along with a Travel Insurance Recommendation form. This form must be signed and returned to OCP Pilgrimages with your initial deposit. RESPONSIBILITY AND LIABILITY: OCP Pilgrimages and participating tour operators operate the land tours as agents of the hotels, bus operators, sightseeing contractors and others who provide the actual land arrangements. They are not liable for any act, omission, delay, injury, loss, damage or non-performance occurring in connection with these arrangements. Air carriers and other transportation companies whose services are featured in these tours are not to be held responsible for any act, omission or event during the time passengers are not on board. The contract in use by these companies when issued shall constitute the sole contract between the companies and the purchaser of the tours and/or passage. Monday, May 9Depart for the overnight flight to Athens, Greece, enjoying dinner and movies in-flight.

Tuesday, May 10 – Athens Arrive in Athens, city of Athena and capital of Greece. Continue to our city center hotel for relaxation and dinner.

Wednesday, May 11 – Athens We enjoy a city tour of Athens, which underwent a great restoration program prior to the 2004 Olympic Games. We see the Acropolis, or upper town, where the city’s most important buildings were constructed from fine white marble in the 5th Century BC. We then visit the new museum, built to display all the findings from more than 3,000 years of history before continuing on to see the marble stadium where the first modern Olympics were held in 1896. We celebrate Mass at St. Dionysus, the Catholic cathedral of Athens. Breakfast and dinner included.

Thursday, May 12 – Nafplio This morning we leave Athens by the west highway, stopping for a short while at the Corinth Canal, dug in the 19th Century to save several days of sailing around the Peleponnese Peninsula. We continue on to Corinth, ancient city in which St. Paul spent 18 months in 51 – 52 AD, preaching to the citizens to reform their ways and writing his famous epistle.We then continue to Mycenae, one of the most powerful and advanced Greek city-states of antiquity. We see the Cyclopean ramparts of the city, the Lion’s Gate and the Royal Tombs, dating at least to the 6th Century BC before continuing to our hotel in Nafplion for dinner and overnight. Breakfast and dinner included.

Sunday, May 15 – Aboard ship Delphi was the site of the most important oracle in the Greek world. The Oracle dispensed advice for centuries to whoever asked. The site was revered throughout the Greek world as the center of the earth, thanks to the legend which told that two eagles, released by Zeus from opposite ends of the universe, met above what became known as Delphi. We see the Theatre, Stadium, Treasury of the Athenians and the Temple of Apollo, as well as the museum, before continuing to the port of Piraeus for the overnight ferry to Rhodes. Breakfast included.

Monday, May 16 – Rhodes This morning we arrive on Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese Group of islands. Founded according to legend by the sun god Helios, the island was one of the main trading posts in the Greek world, and founded many colonies. The wealth and prestige of the island was immortalized by the famous Colossos, a one-hundred-foot-tall bronze statue which was one of the Wonders of the Ancient World. Nowadays the island is a wonderful vacation destination, with Rhodes Town, at the northern end of the island, the main settlement. We enjoy a tour of the old town on arrival, including the citadel, which was the home of the Knights of Rhodes, or Order of the Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, founded in the 11th Century to protect Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land. After checking in at our hotel, we enjoy a relaxing afternoon on this sub-tropical island before meeting again for dinner. Dinner included.

Tuesday, May 17 – Rhodes We spend the free day relaxing or enjoying the sites on Rhodes. Breakfast included.

Wednesday, May 18 – Rhodes, Marmaris, Kusadasi Following a free morning, we take the ferry the short distance to Turkey, continuing along the west coast to Kusadasi for the first of a two night stay. Breakfast and dinner included.

Thursday, May 19 – Kusadasi We enjoy a full-day excursion from Kusadasi to Ephesus, one of the Seven Churches of the Revelation (2:1-7) and well known to St. Paul. We take a walking tour of the extensive ruins, including the Great Theater, built by the Romans between 41 and 117 AD and still used today; the Temple of Hadrian, guarded by a head of Medusa; and the library of Celsus. We then continue to the nearby town of Selcuk to visit the Basilica of St. John the Evangelist, built by the Emperor Justinian on the spot where St. John is thought to have died around 100 AD. We see the remains of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, then drive the short distance to the village of Meryemana to visit the house where the Blessed Virgin spent the last years of her life, cared for by St. John the Evangelist. We return to Kusadasi for the night. Breakfast and dinner included.

Friday, May 20 – Pamukale Pamukale, meaning cotton castle in Turkish, is famous for its array of chalk-white limestone cliffs, near where the ancient Roman spa town of Hierapolis developed. One who came looking for a cure was the apostle Phillip. He died here in 80 AD. We see his tomb and the ruins of the city before continuing for a brief visit to Laodicea (3:14-20), another of the Seven Churches of the Revelation. Breakfast and dinner included.

Friday, May 13 – Olympia We drive across the Arcadian mountains to Olympia, where the Olympic games were first held in 776 BC. The competition brought together most of the Greek city-states every four years.We visit the museum and archaeological area, among the best in the Greek world, and spend the night in the Alfios Valley. Breakfast and dinner included.

Saturday, May 14 – Delphi Today we drive north to Patras, third city of Greece, which was converted to Christianity by St. Andrew during the reign of the Emperor Nero. Crucified shortly after, the x-shaped cross on which he was martyred became known as the Cross of St. Andrew. We visit St. Andrew’s New Church, built to receive the relics, returned to Patras from Rome by Pope Paul VI. We then continue across the Gulf of Corinth Bridge to Delphi, on the slopes of Mount Parnassos. Breakfast and dinner included.
