Finney Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, with a boutique catalogue featuring 152 yearlings, down from 189 in 2012. Potential bidders were out in force at the sales grounds on a bustling Sunday morning. AThe activity has been high and the feedback about the quality of the horses has been very positive,@ reported Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. AUltimately, that=s what makes a good horse sale--having quality stock on the grounds.@ The 2012 Saratoga sale got off to a slow start, with the first-session average down 20% and the median off 29% from the 2011 opening session, but action picked up during the sale=s second session. At the close of business a year ago, 107 yearlings sold for an even $32 million. The average was down 6.3% to $299,065 and the median fell by 10% to $225,000. Given current conditions, Browning is optimistic that the auction is primed for a strong renewal. AThe market has been pretty good and racing has been good,@ Browning said. AWe had two great updates yesterday that improved pedigree pages that were already pretty nice to begin with. So there are a lot of positive factors. And we have high expectations for a very good sale Monday and Tuesday.@ The Saratoga catalog features siblings to Saturday=s two Grade I winners. Warming up for her treble bid with a scintillating performance in the G3 Prix de la Porte Maillot over seven furlongs at Longchamp July 6, the Strawbridge homebred was never more than three lengths off the pace set by her British rival. Given the go-ahead by Thierry Jarnet approaching the furlong pole, the 6-5 pick did what no other had managed in the major sprints so far this term by stripping him of the lead soon after, and she scampered clear under hand riding to score by 1 3/4 lengths. AWhat can be said that has not already been said--she is really fantastic and all class and I think she=s even stronger and better than last season,@ commented trainer Freddy Head, who was registering a remarkable sixth success with just two horses since 2006. Labeled a J “TDN Rising Star” J at two,Moonlight Cloud was sent to the G1 1000 Guineas atNewmarket the following May in the hope that her rawspeed would last the mile, but she duly ran out ofsteam late on to be seventh in that Classic. Returningto her native country to annex the G3 Prix de la PorteMaillot over seven furlongs at Longchamp before herfirst emphatic score in this prize, she was the subject ofa troubled passage when fifth in the six-furlong G2 British Champions Sprint S. on her final sophomorestart at Ascot in October. Back with a win inLongchamp=s G3 Prix du Palais-Royal over a panelfurther last June, she almost managed the unthinkablelater that month when Ascot=s winning post came justa handful of yards too soon and she just failed to endthe dynamic sequence of Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit{Aus}) in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. Stamping herauthority on this contest next time, she was sent backover a mile a week later and was far from disgracedwhen fourth at her second attempt at the trip in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois at this meeting. Proving thatshe does get that far when taking the G1 Prix duMoulin de Longchamp the following month, she neverfeatured in the GI Breeders= Cup Mile at Santa Anita, but showed on her comeback in the Porte Maillot thatshe retained all of her considerable ability. Widethroughout as she had been on her two prior runsthrough this contest, she was kept close enough toLethal Force to avoid giving that rival the potent lead hehad enjoyed in Britain, and was full of run when askedfor her effort inside the final quarter mile. Quicklysubduing the trail-blazer with a furlong to race, she wason auto-pilot from there as she surged to the line torecord the clear-fastest time in the race=s history. ATo win one Maurice de Gheest is fantastic, but towin three with the same filly is amazing,@ Thierry Jarnetsaid. AI=ve been very lucky to be on some really nicehorses this season, and I=m 46 and enjoying it as muchas ever. I had the perfect trip and she did it on her own.I=m happy she didn=t have a hard race with next week inmind.@ Lethal Force=s trainer Clive Cox told the RacingPost, AAdam [Kirby] felt he probably just peaked atNewmarket and just felt a bit flat in comparison. Wewere very happy with him to bring him here afterNewmarket. All credit to the filly and I=m still verypleased with my horse.@

Vanderbilt result cont. "Last year's Vanderbilt was a good opportunity forhim, and I thought he was unfortunate not to win thatday,@ said winning trainer Steve Asmussen. AForeverything to work out, to have him in this positiontoday--a good draw, a good set up--was veryrewarding. I can't say enough about how much respectI have for Justin Phillip as a racehorse. He hasn't heldany of the mistakes we made with him against us. Wewere trying to win the Derby with him when he wasthree! He has a lot of talent, and you want to get thatdone. For him to travel as much as he has, run as fastas he has, and probably put up his best race today--1:08 2/5 in a Grade I, put him over a million dollars--it'svery rewarding." "It was very good,@ pilot Johnny Velazquez said ofthe ride. AThe speed developed the way I expected itwould. I was right behind those two horses[Gentlemen's Bet and Delaunay], and I was aware ofthe horse that was inside [Bahamian Squall], so I kindof got him pinned down inside there. I made my movearound the three-sixteenths pole, and he responded. When you ride these kinds of horses, and they respondto the things you want to do, it makes me look good." Tom Amoss, who trains fourth-place finisherDelaunay commented, "I thought he broke sharp andhad very good position. They were going fast, but he'sused to that. When he hadn't separated himself fromthe field by the eighth pole, I knew we were in trouble.I'm going to give him a little time. His last two racesweren't good and he's telling us something."

Starting off with a two-length win in a six-furlongmaiden at Hoppegarten last July, Penelopa was secondin the Listed Zukunfts-Rennen over a furlong further atBaden-Baden the following month, and returned tocontest the G2 German 1000 Guineas at this trackJune 2. Unable to go the pace when only eighth in thatmile Classic, the bay proved that middle-distances wereher bag when third in the June 22 Listed PreisDusseldorf over 100 yards shy of this trip last time.Held on to early by Eduardo Pedroza, she benefittedfrom the experience and guile of that rider by savingvital energy, allowing the frantic dash to gain aprominent pitch to happen ahead of her. By halfway, she was still on the rail taking the shortest route aroundthe turning circuit with the favorite and G1 Epsom Oaksrunner-up Secret Gesture just ahead, and was still onthe inner as that rival loomed on the front end after thehome turn. Secret Gesture was committed with afurlong remaining and appeared to have the race in safekeeping, but Penelopa gave a surge to overwhelm her inthe final yards and win going away. The victoriousconnections are looking at the G1 Prix Vermeille atLongchamp Sept. 15, while those of the runner-upoffered no excuses for her reversal.

CUP TARGET CONFIRMED FOR WINSILI Saturday=s surprise G1 Nassau S. winner Winsili (GB)(Dansili {GB}) has the Breeders= Cup as her ultimate aimthis term, connections announced yesterday. Followingthe success of the John Gosden-trained 3-year-old inGoodwood=s 10-furlong contest, the Juddmontehomebred is set to build towards the Filly & Mare Turfat Santa Anita in November. AEverything went betterthan expected, but we always had a good opinion ofWinsili,@ Khalid Abdullah=s Racing Manager TeddyGrimthorpe commented. AWinsili had only had the tworaces this season, so she=s not got many miles on theclock. She=s not particularly big, but is a robust filly andI would think a Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Turf mightbe on the agenda as a main aim given mile-and-a-halfraces like the Yorkshire Oaks are out, really. She couldtake in something like the G1 Prix de l=Opera [atLongchamp Oct. 6] on the way.@

NIEL TARGET FOR FLINTSHIRE Khalid Abdullah=s Flintshire (GB) (Dansili {GB}) isbeing aimed at the G2 Prix Niel at Longchamp Sept. 15,connections announced yesterday. Successful in the G3Prix du Lys at Chantilly June 16 and G1 Grand Prix deParis also at Longchamp July 13, the Andre Fabretrainee is being geared towards a tilt at the G1 Prix del=Arc de Triomphe. AFlintshire came out of theJuddmonte Grand Prix de Paris in really good shape andeveryone is very happy with him,@ the owner-breeder=sRacing Manager Teddy Grimthorpe commented. AHe willgo, all being well, to the Prix Niel, the trial inSeptember, and then head for the Arc. He looks good,he=s got this wonderfully good stride and he quickenedoff quite a slow pace at Longchamp so we have to bevery positive about him.@

WHITNEY WRAP-UP The Todd-Pletcher trained Cross Traffic (Unbridled=sSong) exited his GI Whitney Invitational win Avery well,@according to his conditioner. "He looked good thismorning and seemed to take the race really well," saidPletcher. "The [GI] Woodward [Aug. 31] is certainly apossibility, and if we decide we need more time, the[GI] Jockey Club Gold Cup [at Belmont Sept. 28] is aback-up plan." Previously, the gray was second by a head behindFlat Out (Flatter) in the GIII Westchester S. at BelmontApr. 27 and was just nipped on the line by Sahara Sky(Pleasant Tap) in the GI Metropolitan Mile May 27. "Ithink when you take a tough beat like he did in theMet, one side of you thinks, 'Well, we'll get one ofthese,'" Pletcher continued. "The other side is, whenyou blow an opportunity, sometimes you never get itagain. I was happy for the horse; he ran two winningraces at Belmont and lost by five inches. So, it wasnice to get a Grade I win for him. He's got a realstallion's pedigree, and that's what you have to do, winraces like that to take it to the next level." "He put himself into the race right away," he addedof the race. "Every time they turned up the pressure, hewas able to turn it up another notch. It was a perfecttrip, but it was a self-produced perfect trip. What I likedabout the race yesterday, it looked like those horseswere gaining on him, but then you look at thegallop-out, and he's cleared them again. It's all afunction of pace and he showed yesterday he's ratable, even though he was on the front end. The first quartershowed he has speed, but he's not headstrong." Reigning GI Breeders= Cup Classic champion FortLarned (E Dubai) also exited the Whitney in good shape. After a slow start, the Ian Wilkes pupil finished fifth."We didn't get away good yesterday; we broke a littleslow," Wilkes said. "That wasn't from any tactics oranything. The horse just broke a little slow, and if webreak better, it changes the complexion of the race.[Cross Traffic's jockey] Johnny [Velazquez] rode a greatrace. He got away with a :24 first quarter. Let's pay alltribute to what Johnny, Todd and Cross Traffic did. Wewill have to regroup.@

AThis Grade I handicap division is a tough division,"Wilkes continued. "We could run this race again inthree or four weeks and have a different winner. It's atestament to how strong a division it is. It's not easy; ifyou make mistakes, you're going to get beat." Sixth-place finisher Alpha (Bernardini) returned to theKiaran McLaughlin stable in good shape as well. "Hecame out of the race great; it was just too tough afield," McLaughlin said. "We're not sure what we'regoing to do from here, but he's fine. He's in goodshape." "We were expecting a much faster first quarter andhalf," McLaughlin said of Alpha=s position during therace.
