**Please note - After long discussions, dragging feet and empty promises between Industry leaders, Defra and the
Food Standards Agency.... Defra have decided to make a U-turn on their decision made at the end of 2018 about
ageing prime sheep by date, not dentition. The Livestock Auctioneers Association who were a key driver behind the
proposed changes, were told by George Eustice, Lord Gardiner and Christine Middlemiss (Chief Veterinary Officer)
that a change in the rules at this time (as we prepare to leave the EU) would “muddy the waters” and could impact
on the UK’s future access to the EU market. This means WE WILL CONTINUE TO MOUTH SHEEP and sell those
cutting mature teeth separately**

A variable show of 462 hoggs and mature sheep met a mixed trade, weight and fat continue to struggle but good meat 45-
49kg hoggs sold to £99.50 for Ian Robertson of Exeter, £98.50 (210ppk) for Gilbert Cummins of Cove and £95.50 (212ppk)
for Graham Parker of Burrington. Overweights sold slightly better than the previous few weeks with a top of £99 for Mark
Harvey of Slapton followed by Colin Pople of Bridgewater at £97.50, CT Farming of Winkleigh at £96 and EJ & DJ Baily of
Farway at £95.20 with majority of the rest between £85 & £95. Best per kilo went to Richard Yabsley of Dartmouth with
nice 41kg hoggs at 229ppk (£94) whilst Mike Tozer of Cornworthy sold 42kgs at £89 (212ppk) as well as 40kgs at £84.50
(211ppk). Lighter weights consisted mainly of hill breeds but trade was strong regardless with Tom Friend of Lydford
selling 37kgs at £76.50 (207ppk) as well as 33kgs at £69.80 (212ppk) and all 100 hoggs in this weight range averaged 197ppk.
Mature sheep maxed out at £78 for CT Farming and sold to 148ppk for West Upham Farm of Cheriton Fitzpaine.
911 cull ewes and rams sold to a larger crowd of buyers but not that much livelier trade, especially for the heavier, bigger
types. Pure Texel ewes to £109.50 for Nic Prouse of Wellinton and
£109 for FH Chave & Son whilst other continental bred ewes sold at
£107.50 for Adrian & Julie Rich of Halwell, £100 for Reg & Annie Pedrick
of Ashburton, £99.50 for DF & JL Shervington of Hittisleigh and £98 for
Anthony Carter of Dawlish. Suffolk cross ewes to £97 for Baker Bros
of Highampton with plenty £89 to £96. Lean Dorset ewes straight off
their lambs look well sold into the £80’s regularly whilst fat Dorsets are early £60’s. Mules and Mashams were no faster
with a few pens early £70’s. Hill ewes keenly contested and look dear in comparison with best Scotch ewes to £66.50 for
the Osbourne family of North Bovey. Rams looking big for the money and nothing too exciting of a trade topping at £90
for both the John family of Lapford and Paul Vanstone of Bratton Clovelly. Overall average was up £7 to £71.
** Reminder that Cull Ewes are not to be presented for sale heavy in lamb**

Prime & Cull sheep Mortality and Rejection Insurance
As of 1st April 2019 a levy of 15p (12p plus VAT) will be deducted from all prime and cull sheep sold at Exeter on a Monday to cover deaths and meat rejections associated with slaughter stock from this sale. There is an exception to this levy if a
vendor is deemed to have an epidemic of cysticercus-ovis or similar, but in this unlikely event the auctioneer will liaise with the vendor in question.
